Book Nuclear Power in the OECD

Download or read book Nuclear Power in the OECD written by John Paffenbarger and published by OECD/IEA. This book was released on 2001 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive overview explores the policy issues and other factors affecting the future of nuclear power in OECD countries. It provides a wealth of historical and current information of interest to both energy industry professionals and policy makers. Nuclear power has grown steadily since the early 1960s. Today it provides one quarter of OECD electricity supply from 300 GWe capacity. It is an important contributor to OECD energy security. Existing nuclear plants appear ready to meet the challenges of electricity market competition. The industry has experienced sustained improvements in technical and economic performance. A major advantage of nuclear power is that it produces none of the airborne pollutants or carbon dioxide that fossil-fuelled plants do. Nonetheless, nuclear power must cope with many challenges. New nuclear plants face formidable competition from fossil fuel generation, given nuclear power s high capital cost and today s fossil fuel prices. Almost half of OECD countries have placed restrictions on building nuclear power plants. Disposal facilities for high-level wastes are under development, but face technical and political hurdles before they can become operational. Can nuclear power meet these challenges and thrive in future energy markets? Or will its contribution to energy supply ebb in coming years? This book provides a critical assessment of the issues that will shape the answers to these questions.

Book Electricity Reform

Download or read book Electricity Reform written by John Paffenbarger and published by OECD/IEA. This book was released on 1999 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This booklet considers the impact of electricity market reform on power generation costs and investment. Governments throughout the OECD are restructuring their electricity supply industries, reducing the direct role of the state and introducing competition. These changes are designed to increase the economic efficiency of electricity supply and to lower prices for consumers. Maintaining adequate investment in new generation capacity is another important objective. The study concludes that market reform is likely to lead to reduced generation costs. Reformed systems should also preserve system reliability and adequacy of investment.

Book Competition in Electricity Markets

Download or read book Competition in Electricity Markets written by Carlos Ocaña and published by OECD. This book was released on 2001 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyses the development of choice and competition in the Electricity Supply Industry (ESI). Drawing on a review of the international experience, it describes the main approaches that are being developed, discusses the key issues in the effective reform of electricity markets and provides an assessment of the emerging approach to reform. The book is written from the perspective of regulators and policy makers. It seeks to answer the question: what is an effective regulatory framework for competition in electricity markets?

Book The Power of Transformation

Download or read book The Power of Transformation written by International Energy Agency and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wind power and solar photovoltaics (PV) are crucial to meeting future energy needs while decarbonizing the power sector. Deployment of both technologies has expanded rapidly in recent years, one of the few bright spots in an otherwise bleak picture of clean energy progress. However, the inherent variability of wind power and solar PV raises unique and pressing questions. Can power systems remain reliable and cost-effective while supporting high shares of variable renewable energy (VRE)? And if so, how? Based on a thorough review of the integration challenge, this publication gauges the economic significance of VRE integration impacts, highlights the need for a system-wide approach to integrating high shares of VRE and recommends how to achieve a cost-effective transformation of the power system. This book summarizes the results of the third phase of the Grid Integration of VRE (GIVAR) project, undertaken by the IEA over the past two years. It is rooted in a set o

Book Electricity Information 2010

    Book Details:
  • Author : International Energy Agency
  • Publisher : Organization for Economic
  • Release : 2010
  • ISBN : 9789264084186
  • Pages : 788 pages

Download or read book Electricity Information 2010 written by International Energy Agency and published by Organization for Economic. This book was released on 2010 with total page 788 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Electricity Information provides a comprehensive review of historical and current market trends in the OECD electricity sector, including 2009 preliminary data. This reference document brings together essential statistics on electricity and heat. It therefore provides a strong foundation for policy and market analysis, which in turn can better inform the policy decision process toward selecting policy instruments best suited to meet domestic and international objectives. Part II of the publication provides an overview of the world electricity developments in 2008, covering world electricity and heat production, input fuel mix, supply and consumption, and electricity imports and exports. A greater focus is given to OECD countries with more detailed information covering production, installed capacity, input energy mix to electricity and heat production, consumption, electricity trades, input fuel prices and end-user electricity prices. Part III of the publication provides a corresponding statistical overview of developments in the world and OECD electricity and heat market, as well as monthly OECD production and trade electricity data for 2009. Part IV provides, in tabular form, detailed and comprehensive statistical coverage of the power and heat industry developments for each OECD member country and for OECD and IEA regional aggregates. It provides comprehensive statistical details on overall energy consumption, economic indicators, electricity and heat production by energy form and plant type, electricity imports and exports, sectoral energy and electricity consumption as well as prices for electricity and electricity input fuels for each country and regional aggregate. Electricity Information is one of a series of annual IEA statistical publications on major energy sources; other reports are Coal Information, Natural Gas Information, Oil Information and Renewables Information.

Book Transport Energy and CO2

Download or read book Transport Energy and CO2 written by International Energy Agency and published by OECD. This book was released on 2009 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Car ownership is set to triple by 2050, trucking activity will double and air travel could increase fourfold. This book examines how to enable mobility without accelerating climate change. it finds that if changes are made to the way people travel, adoption of technologies to improve vehicle efficiency and a shift to low-CO2 fuels, it is possible to move onto a different pathway where transport CO2 emissions by 2050 are far below current levels, at costs that are lower than many assume. the report discusses the prospects for shifting more travel to the most efficient modes and reducing travel growth rates, improving vehicle fuel efficiency by up to 50% using cost-effective, incremental technologies, and moving toward electricity, hydrogen, and advanced biofuels to achieve a more secure and sustainable transport future. If governments implement strong policies to achieve this scenario, transport can play its role and dramatically reduce CO2 emissions by 2050.
