Book Electrical Screening Procedure for Solid Ionic Conductors

Download or read book Electrical Screening Procedure for Solid Ionic Conductors written by and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An electrical screening method has been developed for preliminary evaluation of polycrystalline specimens of candidates for use as solid ionic conductive electrolytes in batteries. The procedure measures dielectric loss and capacitance, from which are calculated an ac conductivity attributed provisionally to ions and an activation energy for that conductivity. Electronic conductivity is directly measured. The screening procedure applied to sodium beta-alumina yielded acceptable values for conductivity and activation energy.

Book Selection and Preliminary Evaluation of Three Structures as Potential Solid Conductors of Alkali Ions

Download or read book Selection and Preliminary Evaluation of Three Structures as Potential Solid Conductors of Alkali Ions written by and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Utilization of crystal-chemical criteria has suggested three structure types in which alkali ions may be mobile: (1)hollandites K(x)Mg(x/2)Ti(8-x/2)O16 and K(x)Al(x)Ti(8-x)O16 for 1.6 less than or equal to x less than or equal to 2.0 tungstate K2W4013; and (3) sodium hexatitante Na2Ti6O13. Each is a tunnel structure. An electrical screening procedure, previously tested on beta-alumina, has indicated high K(+) ion mobility in the hollandites and in the tungstate, but not in the hexatitanate. Specimens were polycrystalline disks near 90 percent of theoretical density. The ac conductivity calculated from dielectric and capacitance measurements has been attributed to ion mobility. This ac conductivity was up to 0.01/ohm-cm for hollandites and about 0.0001/ohm-cm for the tungstate, with approximate activation energies of 21 to 25 and 16 kJ/mole (5 to 6 and 4 kcal/mole), respectively. Electronic conduction and chemical reactivity have eliminated the tungstate from further consideration. The hollandites have been considered worthy of further development and evaluation.

Book Conductivity Fluctuations in Fast Ionic Conductors

Download or read book Conductivity Fluctuations in Fast Ionic Conductors written by and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 7 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Electrical conductivity fluctuations in superionic solids provide a new way of examining transport and electrode properties of solid electrolytes. Of particular interest are the Na Beta and Na Beta double primed aluminas because of their high ionic conductivity, potentially important technological applications, and the ease with which the mobile sodium ions can be exchanged for a number of mono- and di-valent cations. Single crystal and ceramic specimens of sodium, silver, lead, and calcium Beta double primed aluminas, as well as mixed Na/Ag and Na/Ca conductors, have been found to exhibit conductivity fluctuations associated with diffusion of the mobile ions. Also, in the absence of electric current and at frequencies above about 100 Hz Nyquist noise corresponding to the bulk electrolyte resistance is observed. Below 100 Hz noise associated with amalgamation reactions at the electrolyte/contact interface or noise associated with ionic shot noise during the build-up of an electric double layer at the interface are dominant. Experimental diffusion noise levels can be quantitatively explained by focusing on the diffusion of ion-vacancy pairs in single conduction planes. Fluctuations in adjacent planes are correlated and corrections arising from in-plane coulomb forces are negligible.
