Book Electrical Breakdown and Discharges in Gases

Download or read book Electrical Breakdown and Discharges in Gases written by Erich E. Kunhardt and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Advanced Study Institute on Breakdown and Discharges in Gases was held in Les Arcs, France, June 28 to July 10, 1981. The object of the Institute was to provide a broad but compre hensive presentation of the various topics in the field of Gaseous electronics. To achieve this goal, a number of lectures, seminars, and panel discussions were scheduled. Each topic was developed by two tutorial and/or review lectures, and brought to the present state of the topic by seminars and panel discussions. The program of topics and speakers was selected with the assistance of the advisory committee composed of: J. A. Rees, European Coordinator, England; M. Goldman, French Coordinator, France; A. H. Guenther, USA; M. Kristiansen, USA; and A. V. Phelps, USA. The most memorable aspect of the Institute was the sustained high interest of the faculty and participants for the two week period. The daily schedule was demanding: five hours of lectures, two hours of seminars and one of discussion. These sessions were often extended because of presentation by the participants of im proptu seminars. The discussions were intense. Majestic }10nt Blanc provided the backdrop for the lecture hall, and these surroundings and the weather contributed to the overall positive mood. It was a wonderful occasion. The lectures and seminars have been collected into two volumes.

Book Encyclopedia of Astrobiology

Download or read book Encyclopedia of Astrobiology written by Ricardo Amils and published by Springer. This book was released on 2021-01-14 with total page 1853 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The interdisciplinary field of Astrobiology constitutes a joint arena where provocative discoveries are coalescing concerning, e.g. the prevalence of exoplanets, the diversity and hardiness of life, and its increasingly likely chances for its emergence. Biologists, astrophysicists, biochemists, geoscientists and space scientists share this exciting mission of revealing the origin and commonality of life in the Universe. The members of the different disciplines are used to their own terminology and technical language. In the interdisciplinary environment many terms either have redundant meanings or are completely unfamiliar to members of other disciplines. The Encyclopedia of Astrobiology serves as the key to a common understanding. Each new or experienced researcher and graduate student in adjacent fields of astrobiology will appreciate this reference work in the quest to understand the big picture. The carefully selected group of active researchers contributing to this work and the expert field editors intend for their contributions, from an internationally comprehensive perspective, to accelerate the interdisciplinary advance of astrobiology.

Book Pulsed Electrical Discharge in Vacuum

Download or read book Pulsed Electrical Discharge in Vacuum written by Gennadiĭ Andreevich Mesi︠a︡t︠s︡ and published by Springer. This book was released on 1989 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is an up-to-date review of studies in the physics of pulsed electrical discharges in a vacuum. It gives the reader detailed information on the processes occurring at electrodes and in vacuum gaps and on the mechanisms of discharge initiation and development. Modern techniques and equipment are described in detail. Their high temporal and spatial resolution may be used to solve a number of problems concerning the short-term and microscopic aspects of discharges. A summary is given of a great deal of experimental data on the kinetics of vacuum breakdown. The authors used these results to identify a series of steps in the vacuum breakdown phenomenon. They were the first to discover and describe the explosive electron emission phenomenon and to show its fundamental role in the spark and the arc stages of a discharge. The information in this book may encourage the reader to design new experiments. The results presented may be applied to solve specific research or engineering problems.

Download or read book Electrical Discharge written by C. Guy Suits and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2016-12-20 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Collected Works of Irving Langmuir, Volume 4: Electrical Discharge is a 12-chapter text that covers the fundamental and theoretical aspects of electrical discharge, with a particular emphasis on discharge in gases. The opening chapters are concerned the negative probes as being due to the random positive-ion current of the plasma and the proper space-charge with a very simple discharge tube and some miscellaneous experiments on a simple tube in which streamer type discharges were observed, as well as the effects of small amounts of tungsten in the argon discharge. These topics are followed by discussions on the verification of the Langmuir Probe-Theory; the disturbing effects of mercury vapor blast from the cathode spot on the mercury pool; and the phenomena observed in the low pressure discharges. Other chapters explore the Faraday dark space of the glow discharge and how the electrons of a beam in a plasma are given their higher velocity components. The final chapters introduce the concept of plasma oscillation. This book will be of value to electronics engineers and technical workers.

Book Electrical Discharge Machining

Download or read book Electrical Discharge Machining written by Elman C. Jameson and published by Society of Manufacturing Engineers. This book was released on 2001 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In writing this book, the author focused on EDM fundamentals. These are the items common to all EDM machines, such as the spark, how the spark is controlled, what causes overcut, and the importance of the dielectric fluid. With regard to the workplace, covered are the affect the spark has on the metallurgy and how the surface finish is produced and controlled. The book also describes the development of Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM), the EDM system and process, the EDM sparking systems, the power supply (generator), spark voltage, electrode servo systems, di-electric systems, ionization and electrode wear, chips, the EDM surface, DC arcing, different kinds of EDM, autormatic servo systems operation, and electromagnetic radiation. It is the author's intent that this text will serve as the primer on the EDM process, allowing the people using EDM to become more efficient and the machines more productive."--Back cover.

Book No Truth Except in the Details

Download or read book No Truth Except in the Details written by A.J. Kox and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1995-06-30 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beginning with a couple of essays dealing with the experimental and mathematical foundations of physics in the work of Henry Cavendish and Joseph Fourier, the volume goes on to consider the broad areas of investigation that constituted the central foci of the development of the physics discipline in the nineteenth century: electricity and magnetism, including especially the work of Michael Faraday, William Thomson, and James Clerk Maxwell; and thermodynamics and matter theory, including the theoretical work and legacy of Josiah Willard Gibbs, some experimental work relating to thermodynamics and kinetic theory of Heinrich Hertz, and the work of Felix Seyler-Hoppe on hemoglobin in the neighboring field of biophysics/biochemistry. Moving on to the beginning of the twentieth century, a set of three articles on Albert Einstein deal with his early career and various influences on his work. Finally, a set of historiographical issues important for the history of physics are discussed, and the chronological conclusion of the volume is an article on the Solvay Conference of 1933. For physicists interested in the history of their discipline, historians and philosophers of science, and graduate students in these and related disciplines.
