Book excerpt: This report results from a contract tasking Lebedev Physics Institute as follows: Previous research carried out under the ISTC partner contracts has demonstrated that an electric discharge could be a powerful means for producing highly excited CO molecules needed for overtone CO lasers, for producing electrically excited oxygen and for obtaining iodine atoms via iodine dissociation, which can be extremely useful for the development of the electrically assisted oxygen-iodine laser. Therefore, the Project will be aimed at improving understanding of three main problems tightly related to each other: the experimental and theoretical study of the kinetics of highly excited CO molecules in an E-beam and RF discharge, which is extremely important for development of efficient overtone CO laser (including the supersonic CO laser); the experimental and theoretical study of singlet-delta oxygen (SDO) kinetics in E-beam and DC discharges, which is important for efficient SDO production and development of an electrically-assisted oxygen-iodine laser; the experimental and theoretical study of the kinetics of atomic iodine production in vortex flow DC discharges, which is important for the improvement of chemical oxygen-iodine lasers. The research team proposed for this project consists of experts from the Gas Laser Lab and Chemical Lasers Lab of the Quantum Radiophysics Institute of the Lebedev Physics Institute in Moscow and the Samara Branch of the Lebedev Institute. The research team has extensive experience in the field of experimental and theoretical fundamental research on kinetic processes taking place in the active media of different electric discharge and chemical lasers.

Each vibrational mode in the system is assumed to reach internal equilibrium rapidly, permitting description of the system by six temperatures (CO2 nu1, nu2, and nu3, N2, CO, and kinetic). The various excitation and transfer processes exchanging energy between these modes are discussed and a summary of available data on the relevant process rates has been collected. The six differential equations corresponding to the six vibrational temperatures are solved numerically and the laser flux and gain calculated as function of time. This model is applied to the prediction of behavior in pulsed lasers and amplifiers. The predictions of gain and laser output are compared with experiments performed on different lasers at AERL, at both atmospheric and 1/10 atmospheric pressure. Gain and laser output measurements have been performed on the laser Humdinger Junior at temperatures near 200K, as well as near 300K. Less conventional gas mixtures have been investigated theoretically and experimentally.

Book excerpt: It has been long recognized that continuous-wave (CW) chemical lasers represent an extremely complex interaction between fluid mechanics, chemical kinetics, and optical physics. The chemical oxygen-iodine laser presents additional problems in that the energy storage medium, singlet oxygen, is generated by a liquid-gas phase reaction. The kinetics of chemical oxygen-iodine lasers can be divided into five categories: 1) the chemistry of singlet oxygen generators, 2) the chemistry of COIL in the presence of water aerosols, 3) transport of singlet oxygen in the absence of iodine, 4) the dissociation of molecular iodine by excited oxygen, and 5) the kinetics of iodine atoms and excited oxygen. Only the last three kinetics topics are covered in this review. This report presents the Air Force Weapons Laboratory Standard Chemical Oxygen-Iodine Laser Kinetics Package. A complete reaction scheme including recommended rate coefficients for modeling the gas phase kinetics of chemical oxygen-iodine lasers (COIL) was established to provide a common basis for the research and development of COIL devices. A review of the experimental kinetic data base from which the model was derived is also presented. However, the fully coupled, reactive mixing and optical physics problems inherent in supersonic chemical oxygen-iodine lasers are not addressed. (aw).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: Master Equation modeling of the kinetic processes associated with carbon monoxide (CO) lasers has been done by a variety of authors. Presented here is a kinetic model built upon the foundation laid by the previous models. The present kinetic model incorporates the best available rate parameters. Additionally, the Boltzmann equation for electron energy is coupled to the model to better model the electric discharge excitation. The present model has been previously validated for continuous wave (cw) fundamental lasing. It is validated here for Q-switched fundamental lasing as well as first overtone cw lasing. This validation gives confidence in using the current model as a predictive design tool. The model is used to study general design parameters of a Q-switched fundamental CO laser that outputs power on higher overtones as well. Using the concepts learned from the general design study and coupling them to available experimental equipment, a detailed design of a second overtone laser is also performed.

Book excerpt: The papers collected in this volume have been presented during a workshop on "Electron-Atom and Molecule Collisions" held at the Centre for Interdisciplinary Studies of the University of Bielefeld in May 1980. This workshop, part of a larger program concerned with the "Properties and Reactions of Isolated Molecules and Atoms," focused on the theory and computational techniques for the quanti tative description of electron scattering phenomena. With the advances which have been made in the accurate quantum mechanical characterisation of bound states of atoms and molecules, the more complicated description of the unbound systems and resonances important in electron collision processes has matured too. As expli cated in detail in the articles of this volume, the theory for the quantitative explanation of elastic and inelastic electron molecule collisions, of photo- and multiple photon ionization and even for electron impact ionization is well developed in a form which lends itself to a complete quantitative ab initio interpretation and pre diction of the observable effects. Many of the experiences gained and the techniques which have evolved over the years in the com putational characterization of bound states have become an essential basis for this development. To be sure, much needs to be done before we have a complete and detailed theoretical understanding of the known collisional processes and of the phenomena and effects, which may still be un covered with the continuing refinement of the experimental tech niques.
