Book excerpt: Excerpt from Electric Arcs Experiments Upon Arcs Between, Different Electrodes in Various, Environments and Their Explanation While the electric arc is one of the most common things of modern life, an understanding of it is not common. This is largely due to the difficulty of becoming familiar with the investigations which have been made on this subject. There have indeed been many articles published concerning it, but they are scattered through many publications, and the data given by different experimenters are not consistent with each other, and none of the explanations are entirely satisfactory. "The Electric Arc," by Mrs. Hertha Ayrton, gave an account of the experiments which were performed prior to 1898, but very little investigation had been made at that time of any arc except the open carbon arc, and none of the explanations based on the ionic theory had been given, so that by far the greater part of what is now known concerning the arc could not then be described. An excellent work in German, "Der elektrische Lichtbogen" by Berthold Monash, has more recently appeared, but this deals but briefly with the theoretical side and does not meet the requirements of those who would read English rather than German. The range of parameters is: arc current 2 to 30 KA, pressure in various gases up to 4 atm, magnetic field strength up to 6 KG. The arc travels in a uniform magnetic field between segmented rail electrodes. The self-magnetic field of the current feed rails is reduced to a negligible level. Measurements of the arc velocity are given. Test plates of various metals are placed between the electrode rails. They are traversed by the moving arc so that the plates are exposed to the anode attachment on one side and to the cathode attachment on the other side. The thermal and electrical properties of various electrode metals have been compiled. The relative erosion resistance of the metals is evaluated. High-speed photos have indicated that the moving arc attaches in one or several simultaneous attachment spots at anode and cathode. The lifetime of these attachment spots was found to be in the range from 1 to 20 microseconds on copper electrodes. They emit a high velocity jet of plasma which influences the stability and propagation of the travelling arc. (Author).
