Book excerpt: Matthew Bartels, a brilliant, idealistic 37-year-old math teacher, is asked to participate as a keynote speaker in a seminar on sustainable growth to achieve better governance after the upcoming elections. This leads to his joining a political party to realize his vision. He discovers that politics and crime are closely linked and concentrated in the evil genius of’ ’The Voice’, who is building a drug empire. As the pressure of work, politics and character assassination builds, Matthew relives his childhood horrors via his nightmares and the reader learns about his traumatic youth. Throughout the novel the love relationship and the political & criminal plot lines are inextricably linked, and contribute to Matthew’s unraveling. The characters are all in the grip of the upcoming elections and dance to its rhythm, each in his own way, weaving an intricate and spellbinding choreography of human desires, ambitions, greed, love, passion, sacrifice and idealism. ‘Election Dance’ is a realistic, literary narco thriller, as well as an erotic and psychological novel, depicting real life situations and taboos within the context of Curaçao’s social-historical and cultural setting and holds up a mirror to modern society. But Matthew learns there is a price to pay when entering politics. His background is attacked by the media and demons of his past are resurrected. The attacks are instigated by Manny Contreras, 'The Voice,' whose goal is to turn Curaçao into an import-export hub of Colombian drugs for Europe and the U.S.The political campaign becomes ugly and ruins his love relationship. His private life and politics are inextricably linked, contributing to Matthew’s unraveling. As 'The Voice' does all he can to neutralize Matthew’s popularity, Matthew works with the police to end Manny’s drug career, even at great personal cost.Almost in the manner of Balzac, Joseph Hart presents a cross-section of Curaçao, from the most wretched and impoverished of its citizens to the most powerful and corrupt of its politicians. He is unflinching in his description whether of love

Book Dancing Without Partners

Download or read book Dancing Without Partners written by David B. Magleby and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2007 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Political parties, interest groups, and candidate campaigns all pursue similar goals in presidential elections: each entity attempts to mobilize voters. However, the regulatory environment often prevents these groups from coordinating their efforts. With participants playing by new rules mandated by the Bipartisan Campaign Reform Act, the 2004 presidential election included previously unseen configurations and alliances between political actors. In some campaign situations, the resulting 'dance' was carefully choreographed. In others, dancers stepped on each other's toes. In still others, participants could only eye each other across the floor. Dancing without Partners intensively analyzes the relationships among candidates, political parties, and interest groups under the BCRA's new regulations in the 2004 election cycle in five battleground states. The chapters assess the ways in which the rules of the game have changed the game itself_and also how they haven't. The result is a book that will be invaluable to researchers and students of presidential elections.

Book excerpt: Election campaigns, political events, and national celebration days in Malawi usually feature groups of women who dance and perform songs of praise for politicians and political parties. However, as Lisa Gilman explains, inThe Dance of Politics, "praise performing" is one of the few ways that poor women are allowed to participate in a male-dominated political system in which issues of gender, economics, and politics collide in surprising ways. Along with its solid grounding in the relevant literature,The Dance of Politicsdraws strength from Gilman's first-hand observations and her interviews with a range of participants in the political process, from dancers to politicians.

Book After the Dance the Drums Are Heavy

Download or read book After the Dance the Drums Are Heavy written by Rebecca Hope Dirksen and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2019-12-31 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Richly ethnographic and a compelling read, After the Dance, the Drums Are Heavy is a study of carnival, politics, and the musical engagement of ordinary citizens and celebrity musicians in contemporary Haiti. The book explores how the self-declared president of konpa Sweet Micky (Michel Martelly) rose to the nation's highest office while methodically crafting a political product inherently entangled with his musical product. It offers deep historical perspective on the characteristics of carnivalesque verbal play-and the performative skillset of the artist (Sweet Micky) who dominated carnival for more than a decade-including vulgarities and polemics. Yet there has been profound resistance to this brand of politics led by many other high-profile artists, including Matyas and Jòj, Brothers Posse, Boukman Eksperyans, and RAM. These groups have each released popular carnival songs that have contributed to the public's discussions on what civic participation and citizenship in Haiti can and should be. Drawing on more than a decade and a half of ethnographic research, Rebecca Dirksen presents an in-depth consideration of politically and socially engaged music and what these expressions mean for the Haitian population in the face of challenging political and economic circumstances. After the Dance, the Drums Are Heavy centers the voices of Haitian musicians and regular citizens by extensively sharing interviews and detailed analyses of musical performance in the context of contemporary events well beyond the musical realm.

Book excerpt: Throughout Bobby Wabalanginy's young life the ships have been arriving, bringing European settlers to the south coast of Western Australia, where Bobby's people, the Noongar people, have always lived. Bobby, smart, resourceful and eager to please, has befriended the settlers, joining them as they hunt whales, till the land, and work to establish their new colony. He is welcomed into a prosperous white family and eventually finds himself falling in love with the daughter, Christine. But slowly - by design and by hazard - things begin to change. Not everyone is so pleased with the progress of the white colonists. Livestock mysteriously starts to disappear, crops are destroyed, there are 'accidents' and injuries on both sides. As the Europeans impose ever-stricter rules and regulations in order to keep the peace, Bobby's Elders decide they must respond in kind, and Bobby is forced to take sides, inexorably drawn into a series of events that will for ever change the future of his country. That Deadman Dance is haunted by tragedy, as most stories of first contact between European and native peoples are. But through Bobby's life, this novel exuberantly explores a moment in time when things might have been different, when black and white lived together in amazement rather than fear of the other, and when the world suddenly seemed twice as large and twice as promising.
