Book Tales of the Elder Statesman

Download or read book Tales of the Elder Statesman written by Edward Faith and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2021-03-15 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In and around Rough Edge (The western side of the village of St. Stephens, Alabama) several crusty old gentlemen lived. In his young days Edward was often enthralled by the tales these old men told. Over the years many tales accumulated in his repertory. Edward often regaled gatherings of the good people of St. Stephens with those stories. He was told by many, “you should write a book containing these stories.” In considering writing a book of anecdotes Edward chose, “Tales of the Elder Statesman,” as the title. One of the old men who spun many of the stories considered himself to be an authority on Washington County politics. In reality just the opposite was true. If you wanted to vote for a winning candidate, vote against the person Rufus was backing. In jest Edward began calling him the Elder Statesman. In the book the stories of several crabby old men are recorded and the term, “The Elder Statesman” is used to refer to each of these old men. Thus, The Elder Statesman,” applies to a number of different men. It became a compilation of all those different personalities. Most of the stories are humorous, some are heartwarming morality revelations, while a few are pure fiction. The real beauty of, “Tales of the Elder Statesman”, lies in the fact that the reader does not have to keep up with a complicated plot. He can read a few tales, put the book down for a week then read some more tales without missing a beat. This book is dedicated to preserving the memory of those wonderful old men

Book excerpt: The young Reuben Clark struggled to gain an education in rural Granstville, Utah. Finally in 1890, at considerable inconvenience to his parents, he attended college in Salt Lake City, then Columbia University in Manhattan. Quinn's revisitation of Clark's life might well be the last great biography of a twentieth-century Mormon leader.

Book J Frank Dobie

Download or read book J Frank Dobie written by Steven L. Davis and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2010-01-01 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first Texas-based writer to gain national attention, J. Frank Dobie proved that authentic writing springs easily from the native soil of Texas and the Southwest. In best-selling books such as Tales of Old-Time Texas, Coronado's Children, and The Longhorns, Dobie captured the Southwest's folk history, which was quickly disappearing as the United States became ever more urbanized and industrial. Renowned as "Mr. Texas," Dobie paradoxically has almost disappeared from view—a casualty of changing tastes in literature and shifts in social and political attitudes since the 1960s. In this lively biography, Steven L. Davis takes a fresh look at a J. Frank Dobie whose "liberated mind" set him on an intellectual journey that culminated in Dobie becoming a political liberal who fought for labor, free speech, and civil rights well before these causes became acceptable to most Anglo Texans. Tracing the full arc of Dobie's life (1888–1964), Davis shows how Dobie's insistence on "free-range thinking" led him to such radical actions as calling for the complete integration of the University of Texas during the 1940s, as well as taking on governors, senators, and the FBI (which secretly investigated him) as Texas's leading dissenter during the McCarthy era.

Book Seize the Moment

Download or read book Seize the Moment written by Richard Nixon and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2013-01-08 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "What is most striking about Mr. Nixon's charge to seize the moment, nearly all of which is sensible and sound, is the continuity of his counsel." —The New York Times “In Moscow, Khrushchev arrogantly predicted to me, 'Your grandchildren will live under communism.' I responded, 'Your grandchildren will live in freedom.' At the time, I was sure he was wrong, but I was not sure I was right. As a result of the new Soviet revolution, I proved to be right. Khrushchev's grandchildren now live in freedom." In this brilliantly timed book, Richard Nixon defines the challenges and opportunities facing America as the world's sole superpower. Only American leadership, he contends, can guide the turbulent post-Soviet Union world toward freedom and prosperity and make the 21st century an American century. Forcefully dismissing the three prevailing post-Cold War myths about America—that "history has ended" with the defeat of communism, that military power had become irrelevant, and that America is a declining power—Nixon charts the course America must take in the future to seize this moment in history.

Book excerpt: Written in free verse, this drawing room drama by the poet and author of The Cocktail Party and Murder In The Cathedral is a revealing character study of one man who has loved not wisely but perhaps too well. Lord Claverton, celebrated and respected in society, exerts considerable influence especially over his devoted daughter Monica which angers her beau, Charles. Forced by illness into early retirement, Lord Claverton receives two unexpected visitors -- a now dissolute former student and an ex-lover, a wealthy granddame, both of who were led astray in youth by Claverton himself. As these ghosts of his past converge, Claverton is led to a spiritual renewal and dies knowing his daughter will lead a more illuminated life with her husband-to-be.
