Book Elastic Plastic Mixed Mode Fracture Criteria and Parameters

Download or read book Elastic Plastic Mixed Mode Fracture Criteria and Parameters written by Valery N. Shlyannikov and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My wife Tatyana, daughter Mariya, son Alexandr It is well known that the mixed-mode conditions appear when the direction of the applied loading does not coincide with the orthogonal K,-Kn-Km space. In general, in the industrial practice the mixed-mode fracture and the mixed-mode crack growth are more likely to be considered the rule than the exception. Miller et al. considers that cracks can grow due to a mixture of processes (ductile and brittle), mechanisms (static, fatigue, creep) and loading modes (tension, torsion, biax ial/multiaxial). Additionally mixed-mode crack-extension can be affected by many other considerations such as artifact geometry (thin plates, thick shells, and the size, shape and orientation of the defect), environmental effects (temperature, gaseous and liquid surroundings), material state (crystallographic structure, heat treatment and route of manufacture) and stress conditions (out-of-phase and ran dom loading effects). The main feature of the mixed-mode fracture is that the crack growth would no longer take place in a self-similar manner and does not follow a universal trajec tory that is it will grow on a curvilinear path. There are various fracture criteria, which predict the behavior of cracks in brittle and ductile materials loaded in combined modes. Linear elastic fracture mechanics (LEFM) criteria predict basi cally the same direction for crack propagation. Cracks in brittle materials have been shown to propagate normal to the maximum tangential stress. In ductile ma terials yielding occurs at the crack tip and LEFM is no longer applicable.

Book A CTOD Based Mixed Mode Fracture Criterion

Download or read book A CTOD Based Mixed Mode Fracture Criterion written by F. Ma and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 25 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper presents a mixed-mode fracture criterion that uses the crack-tip opening displacement (CTOD) at a fixed distance behind the crack tip as the fracture parameter. This criterion is developed based on a detailed analysis of crack kinking in arbitrary directions. In essence, the proposed criterion states that crack growth occurs when the current CTOD reaches a critical value and the direction of crack growth is the direction that causes either the opening or the shearing CTOD component at the new crack tip to be the absolute maximum. Under linearly elastic conditions, it is shown that this criterion is equivalent to several commonly accepted mixed-mode criteria and predicts that crack growth will occur in a locally Mode I manner. Under elastic-plastic conditions, the mixed-mode CTOD criterion predicts that crack growth will be along either a local Mode I or a local Mode II direction. The prediction of the abrupt transition from Mode I-dominated crack growth to Mode II-dominated crack is in good agreement with the observation of the mixed-mode fracture test results from the Arcan specimens. Alternative forms or extensions of this criterion are also discussed.

Download or read book Fracture Mechanics written by Surjya Kumar Maiti and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2015-10-01 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fracture mechanics studies the development and spreading of cracks in materials. The study uses two techniques including analytical and experimental solid mechanics. The former is used to determine the driving force on a crack and the latter is used to measure material's resistance to fracture. The text begins with a detailed discussion of fundamental concepts including linear elastic fracture mechanics (LEFM), yielding fracture mechanics, mixed mode fracture and computational aspects of linear elastic fracture mechanics. It explains important topics including Griffith theory of brittle crack propagation and its Irwin and Orowan modification, calculation of theoretical cohesive strength of materials through an atomic model and analytical determination of crack tip stress field. This book covers MATLAB programs for calculating fatigue life under variable amplitude cyclic loading. The experimental measurements of fracture toughness parameters KIC, JIC and crack opening displacement (COD) are provided in the last chapter.

Book Fracture Mechanics and Crack Growth

Download or read book Fracture Mechanics and Crack Growth written by Naman Recho and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2012-12-27 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents recent advances related to the following two topics: how mechanical fields close to material or geometrical singularities such as cracks can be determined; how failure criteria can be established according to the singularity degrees related to these discontinuities. Concerning the determination of mechanical fields close to a crack tip, the first part of the book presents most of the traditional methods in order to classify them into two major categories. The first is based on the stress field, such as the Airy function, and the second resolves the problem from functions related to displacement fields. Following this, a new method based on the Hamiltonian system is presented in great detail. Local and energetic approaches to fracture are used in order to determine the fracture parameters such as stress intensity factor and energy release rate. The second part of the book describes methodologies to establish the critical fracture loads and the crack growth criteria. Singular fields for homogeneous and non-homogeneous problems near crack tips, v-notches, interfaces, etc. associated with the crack initiation and propagation laws in elastic and elastic-plastic media, allow us to determine the basis of failure criteria. Each phenomenon studied is dealt with according to its conceptual and theoretical modeling, to its use in the criteria of fracture resistance; and finally to its implementation in terms of feasibility and numerical application. Contents 1. Introduction. Part 1: Stress Field Analysis Close to the Crack Tip 2. Review of Continuum Mechanics and the Behavior Laws. 3. Overview of Fracture Mechanics. 4. Fracture Mechanics. 5. Introduction to the Finite Element Analysis of Cracked Structures. Part 2: Crack Growth Criteria 6. Crack Propagation. 7. Crack Growth Prediction in Elements of Steel Structures Submitted to Fatigue. 8. Potential Use of Crack Propagation Laws in Fatigue Life Design.

Book Fracture Mechanics Criteria and Applications

Download or read book Fracture Mechanics Criteria and Applications written by Emmanuel Gdoutos and published by Springer. This book was released on 1990-11-30 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is difficult to do justice to fracture mechanics in a textbook, for the subject encompasses so many disciplines. A general survey of the field would serve no purpose other than give a collection of references. The present book by Professor E. E. Gdoutos is refreshing because it does not fall into the esoteric tradition of outlining equations and results. Basic ideas and underlying principles are clearly explained as to how they are used in application. The presentations are concise and each topic can be understood by advanced undergraduates in material science and continuum mechanics. The book is highly recommended not only as a text in fracture mechanics but also as a reference to those interested in the general aspects of failure analysis. In addition to providing an in-depth review of the analytical methods for evaluating the fundamental quantities used in linear elastic fracture mechanics, various criteria are discussed re:O. ecting their limitations and applications. Par ticular emphases are given to predicting crack initiation, subcritical growth and the onset of rapid fracture from a single criterion. Those models in which it is assumed that the crack extends from tip to tip rely on the specific surface energy concept. The differences in the global and energy states before and after crack extension were associated with the energy required to create a unit area of crack surface. Applications were limited by the requirement of self-similar crack growth.

Book A Comparison of Elastic Plastic Fracture Parameters in Biaxial Stress States

Download or read book A Comparison of Elastic Plastic Fracture Parameters in Biaxial Stress States written by AP. Kfouri and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Parameters used in fracture predictions in elastic-plastic materials will differ from those used when the material is elastic. However, the first set of parameters may reduce to the latter in the limiting case of brittle behavior involving minimal plasticity. Analyses of the stress and plastic strain fields in the region of the crack tip and evaluations of energy release rates are therefore relevant to studies on fracture processes in engineering materials. It is becoming generally recognized that more than one parameter is needed in the formulation of a realistic fracture criterion applicable to elastic-plastic materials. In particular, such a criterion must take into account the possible biaxial nature of the applied stress.
