Book Elastic Media with Microstructure II

Download or read book Elastic Media with Microstructure II written by I. A. Kunin and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Crystals and polycrystals, composites and polymers, grids and multibar systems can be considered as examples of media with microstructure. A characteristic feature of all such models is the existence of scale parameters which are con nected with microgeometry or long-range interacting forces. As a result the cor responding theory must essentially be a nonlocal one. This treatment provides a systematic investigation of the effects of micro structure, inner degrees of freedom and non locality in elastic media. The prop agation of linear and nonlinear waves in dispersive media, static, deterministic and stochastic problems, and the theory of local defects and dislocations are considered in detail. Especial attention is paid to approximate models and lim iting transitions to classical elasticity. The book forms the second part of a revised and updated edition of the author's monograph published under the same title in Russian in 1975. The first part (Vol. 26 of Springer Series in Solid-State Sciences) presents a self contained theory of one-dimensional models. The theory of three-dimensional models is considered in this volume. I would like to thank E. Kroner and A. Seeger for supporting the idea of an English edition of my original Russian book. I am also grateful to E. Borie, H. Lotsch and H. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Crystals and polycrystals, composites and polymers, grids and multibar systems can be considered as examples of media with microstructure. A characteristic feature of all such models is the existence of scale parameters which are connected with micro geometry or long-range interacting forces. As a result the corresponding theory must essentially be a nonlocal one. The book is devoted to a systematic investigation of effects of microstructure, inner degrees of freedom and nonlocality in elastic media. The propagation of linear and nonlinear waves in dispersive media, static problems, and the theory of defects are considered in detail. Much attention is paid to approximate models and limiting tran sitions to classical elasticity. The book can be considered as a revised and updated edition of the author's book under the same title published in Russian in 1975. The frrst volume presents a self-con tained theory of one-dimensional models. The theory of three-dimensional models will be considered in a forthcoming volume. The author would like to thank H. Book Advances in Doublet Mechanics

Download or read book Advances in Doublet Mechanics written by Mauro Ferrari and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1997 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The recently proposed, fully multi-scale theory of doublet mechanics offers unprecented opportunities to reconcile the discrete and continuum representations of solids while maintaining a simple analytical format and full compatibility with lattice dynamics and continuum mechanics. In this monograph, a self-contained account of the state of the art in doublet mechanics is presented. Novel results in the elastodynamics of microstructured media are reported, including the identification of a new class of dispersive surface waves, and the presentation of methods for the experimental determination of the essential microstructural parameters. The relationships between doublet mechanics, lattice dynamics, and continuum theories are examined, leading to the identification of the subject areas in which the use of doublet mechanics is most advantageous. These areas include the analysis of domains as diverse as micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS), granular and particulate media, nanotubes, and peptide arrays.

Book Physical Properties and Thermodynamic Behaviour of Minerals

Download or read book Physical Properties and Thermodynamic Behaviour of Minerals written by Ekhard K.H. Salje and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 724 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The role played by earth sciences in the scientific community has changed considerably during this century. Since the revolutionary discoveries of global processes such as plate tectonics, there has been an increasing awareness of just how fundamental many of the mechanisms which dominate in these processes depend on the physical properties of the materials of which the earth is made. One of the prime objectives of mineral sciences is now to understand and predict these properties in a truly quantitative manner. The macroscopic properties which are of most immediate interest in this context fall within the conventional definitions of thermodynamics, magnetism, elasticity, dielectric susceptibilities, conductivity etc. These properties reflect the microscopic contributions, at an atomistic level, of harmonic and anharmonic lattice vibrations, ionic and electronic transport as well as a great variety of ordering and clustering phenomena. The advances made by solid state physicists and chemists in defining the underlying phenomena lnvolved in the thermal evolution of materials have stimulated major new research initiatives within the Earth Sciences. Earth Scientists have combined to form active groups within the wider community of solid state and materials scientists working towards a better understanding of those physical processes which govern not only the behaviour of simple model compounds but also that of complex materials like minerals. Concomitant with this change in direction has come an increasing awareness of the need to use the typical working tools of other disciplines.

Book Lattice Dynamical Foundations Of Continuum Theories Elasticity Piezoelectricity Viscoelasticity Plasticity

Download or read book Lattice Dynamical Foundations Of Continuum Theories Elasticity Piezoelectricity Viscoelasticity Plasticity written by Attila Askar and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1986-07-01 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a discussion of lattice dynamics for perfect and imperfect lattices and their relation to continuum theories of elasticity, piezoelectricity, viscoelasticity and plasticity. Some of the material is rather classical and close in spirit to solid state physics. A major aim here is to present a coherent theory for the four basic behavior types in the style of continuum mechanics. In each case, emphasis is on an explicit display of the physical mechanisms involved rather than general formalisms. The material is presented in terms of an atomistic picture for the discrete system. The basic ideas are believed to be relevant also at an intermediate scale in the continuum description of media with structure such as granular materials and composites.

Book Mathematics and Mechanics of Granular Materials

Download or read book Mathematics and Mechanics of Granular Materials written by James M. Hill and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2005-12-27 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Granular or particulate materials arise in almost every aspect of our lives, including many familiar materials such as tea, coffee, sugar, sand, cement and powders. At some stage almost every industrial process involves a particulate material, and it is usually the cause of the disruption to the smooth running of the process. In the natural environment, understanding the behaviour of particulate materials is vital in many geophysical processes such as earthquakes, landslides and avalanches. This book is a collection of current research from some of the major contributors in the topic of modelling the behaviour of granular materials. Papers from every area of current activity are included, such as theoretical, numerical, engineering and computational approaches. This book illustrates the numerous diverse approaches to one of the outstanding problems of modern continuum mechanics.

Book Advances in Extended and Multifield Theories for Continua

Download or read book Advances in Extended and Multifield Theories for Continua written by Bernd Markert and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-07-15 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern computational techniques, such as the Finite Element Method, have, since their development several decades ago, successfully exploited continuum theories for numerous applications in science and technology. Although standard continuum methods based upon the Cauchy-Boltzmann continuum are still of great importance and are widely used, it increasingly appears that material properties stemming from microstructural phenomena have to be considered. This is particularly true for inhomogeneous load and deformation states, where lower-scale size effects begin to affect the macroscopic material response; something standard continuum theories fail to account for. Following this idea, it is evident that standard continuum mechanics has to be augmented to capture lower-scale structural and compositional phenomena, and to make this information accessible to macroscopic numerical simulations.
