Download or read book Begetting written by Mara van der Lugt and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2024-04-30 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An investigation of what it means to have children—morally, philosophically and emotionally “Do you want to have children?” is a question we routinely ask each other. But what does it mean to create a child? Is this decision always justified? Does anyone really have the moral right to create another person? In Begetting, Mara van der Lugt attempts to fill in the moral background of procreation. Drawing on both philosophy and popular culture, van der Lugt does not provide a definitive answer on the morality of having a child; instead, she helps us find the right questions to ask. Most of the time, when we talk about whether to have children, what we are really talking about is whether we want to have children. Van der Lugt shows why this is not enough. To consider having children, she argues, is to interrogate our own responsibility and commitments, morally and philosophically and also personally. What does it mean to bring a new creature into the world, to decide to perform an act of creation? What does it mean to make the decision that life is worth living on behalf of a person who cannot be consulted? These questions are part of a conversation we should have started long ago. Van der Lugt does not ignore the problematic aspects of procreation—ethical, environmental and otherwise. But she also acknowledges the depth and complexity of the intensely human desire to have a child of our own blood and our own making.

Book Educar en el compromiso

Download or read book Educar en el compromiso written by Luis A. Aranguren Gonzalo and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Pathophysiology Homeostasis and Nursing

Download or read book Pathophysiology Homeostasis and Nursing written by Tonks Fawcett and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-06-03 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nursing students quite often find it difficult to relate what they learn with respect to normal and abnormal physiology to patient care. In this useful text Roger Watson and Tonks Fawcett clearly explain: * the concept of homeostasis * the relevance of physiology to common disorders * the patient's response to these disorders * the appropriate nursing response. Each chapter is presented in a standard format with a brief outline of the relevant normal physiology and how homeostatic mechanisms normally cope. The student is led to understand what the patient with a specific disorder feels like and why, and is clearly instructed in what nursing action to take. Pathophysiology, Homeostasis and Nursing shows clearly how understanding physiology can improve nursing care and covers the main issues that relate to basic observations. It includes questions to help the reader test their knowledge as they go along and provides an accessible concise text for health care students, particularly nurses.

Download or read book Nueva Contribuci n a la Cr tica de la Educaci n written by Jaime Villegas Pacheco and published by Palibrio. This book was released on 2012-02 with total page 399 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Download or read book Education and Humanism written by Wiel Veugelers and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-11-16 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Human beings have the possibility to give meaning to their lives and to create coherence in experiences. Present-day humanism strongly focuses on personal development in relation to others. It is this tension between personal development and advancement of humanization, that is creating the opportunities for the personal development of every world citizen. Humanism is about personal autonomy, moral responsibility, and about solidarity with humanity. The tension between autonomy and social involvement is the core of humanism. Education can support persons in their moral and personal identity development. The authors brought together in this book all address issues of developing autonomy and humanity in educational practices. All the chapters try to link theory and practice. They either make theoretical ideas more practical or they use practical experiences and concerns to rethink theoretical notions. Together the chapters in the book give a broad overview of theoretical foundations, concrete research, and practices in education. The book shows a diversity that can inspire scholars and practitioners in further developing their perspectives. Creating meaning is an essential part of all education. Focusing on the linking of autonomy and humanity is the humanist perspective in it.
