Book excerpt: Poetic spaces, surreal structures and dramatic visions. The extraordinary career of Ricardo Bofill is collected in this monograph, which reveals his inspiring approach to architecture, and to life.Ricardo Bofill is one of the 20th century's most unique architects and radical visionaries. With his Taller de Arquitectura he built spaces for everyday life with otherworldly aesthetics, that have been elevated to iconic status in countless films and images. His visions for urban and communal life challenged preconceived notions of shared space and proposed alternative styles of living. This monograph explores his revolutionary approach by profiling his greatest projects. Spectacular new photography, texts from experts and from Bofill himself are complemented by working drawings and floor plans. At a time when prevailing styles in architecture are becoming ever more homogenous, Bofill's fantastic creations satisfy a longing for originality, personality and progressive ideals.

Civilizations throughout time have used it to create stable warm low-impact structures. The world's first skyscrapers were built of mud brick. Paul Revere Chairman Mao and Ronald Reagan all lived in earth houses at various points in their lives and several of the buildings housing Donald Judd's priceless collection at the Chinati Foundation in Marfa Texas are made of mud brick." "While the vast legacy of traditional and vernacular earthen construction has been widely discussed, little attention has been paid to the contemporary tradition of earth architecture. Author Ronald Rael founder of Eartharchitecture.org provides a history of building with earth in the modern era focusing particularly on projects constructed in the last few decades that use rammed earth mud brick compressed earth cob and several other interesting techniques. Earth Architecture presents a selection of more than 40 projects that exemplify new creative uses of the oldest building material on the planet."--BOOK JACKET.

Book excerpt: The first complete monograph on the career of Carlos Ferrater. Carlos Ferrater's early buildings showed how the expression of modern architecture -- with its abstraction, repetition, transparency and use of industrial materials -- could be brought into line with Mediterranean classicism, with the rigor of the composition. Before setting up in 2006, along with Xavier Martí, Lucía Ferrater and Borja Ferrater, the Office of Architecture in Barcelona (OAB), Carlos Ferrater developed an intense and prolonged professional career on his own since 1971, with his advanced project for the Instant City. Now we present this first and therefore complete monograph on the unique career of this Catalan architect, Carlos Ferrater, awarded the 2009 National Architecture Award by the Spanish Ministry of Housing for his overall career and since 2011 member of the Royal Institute of British Architects (International RIBA Fellowship). The book reflects Carlos Ferrater professional practice, having proved his worth in many projects of enormous relevance and distinction.

Download or read book Radical Pedagogies written by Beatriz Colomina and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2022-05-31 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experiments in architectural education in the post–World War II era that challenged and transformed architectural discourse and practice. In the decades after World War II, new forms of learning transformed architectural education. These radical experiments sought to upend disciplinary foundations and conventional assumptions about the nature of architecture as much as they challenged modernist and colonial norms, decentered building, imagined new roles for the architect, and envisioned participatory forms of practice. Although many of the experimental programs were subsequently abandoned, terminated, or assimilated, they nevertheless helped shape and in some sense define architectural discourse and practice. This book explores and documents these radical pedagogies and efforts to defy architecture’s status quo. The experiments include the adaptation of Bauhaus pedagogy as a means of “unlearning” under the conditions of decolonization in Africa; a movement to design for “every body,” including the disabled, by architecture students and faculty at the University of California, Berkeley; the founding of a support network for women interested in the built environment, regardless of their academic backgrounds; and a design studio in the USSR that offered an alternative to the widespread functionalist approach in Soviet design. Viewed through their dissolution and afterlife as well as through their founding stories, these projects from the last century raise provocative questions about architecture’s role in the new century.

Book Alberto Kalach Work

Download or read book Alberto Kalach Work written by Miquel Adrià and published by . This book was released on 2022-03 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive introduction to the work and vision of one of Mexico's most acclaimed contemporary architects Mexican architect Alberto Kalach (born 1960) founded Taller de Arquitectura X (TAX) in 1981, and for more than 35 years the firm's work has produced a wide range of projects: from private commissions to public buildings, from solutions for confined spaces to urban planning problems. The scale of the commission may vary, but the approach remains the same, always driven by a sense of curiosity and experimentation; TAX describes itself as somewhere between "a lab, a greenhouse and learning team." Rather than adhering to a specific style, TAX's constancy is methodological and conceptual, allowing the studio to be prolific, versatile and consistent simultaneously. The studio's work has long been motivated by Kalach's concerns about--and research into--the particular challenges and problems of his native Mexico City. To this end he has designed a minimalist house that can be built for $5,000, the largest public library in Latin America and an ambitious proposed plan to restore Mexico City's ancient lakes (which remains unrealized). Alberto Kalach: Work is an extensive compilation of more than 100 of TAX's built and unbuilt projects. Illustrated with architectural photographs by Iwan Baan and Jaime Navarro as well as Kalach's personal diagrams and drawings, this volume introduces readers to the work and vision of one of Mexico's most acclaimed contemporary architects.
