Book excerpt: A complex portrait of postdictatorial Chile by one of that country's most incisive cultural critics, this book uses memoirs, photographs, the plastic arts, novels, and other texts--the "residues" of a culture--to analyze the political-cultural Chilean landscape in the wake of Augusto Pinochet's seventeen-year military rule. Such residual areas reveal the flaws and lapses in Chile's transition from violent military dictatorship to electoral democracy. Nelly Richard's analysis ranges from an exploration of false memories of the recent past--especially memories of violence--to a discussion of the university under neoliberalism; from debates about the use of the word "gender" to an examination of refractory texts and cultural activities such as Diamela Eltit's "testimonio" of a schizophrenic vagabond, Eugenio Dittborn's use of photography in art installations, and transvestite performances. In "Cultural Residues, each instance becomes a suggestive metaphor for understanding a rapidly modernizing Chile attempting to redemocratize its public life.

Book excerpt: With the death of Franco, Spanish architecture came out of its isolationist shell and subscribed to the international tendencies of the day, whilst always incorporating the special features of a rich and at the same time self-sufficient tradition. Since that time there have been many Spanish architects who have carved out an internationally renowned career for themselves-from Rafael Moneo and Enric Miralles to members of the younger generation like RCR and Tuñón + Mansilla-but even more important is the substratum of small studios concerned with quality architecture that have gradually emerged throughout the country. Away from the traditional focal points of Spanish architecture-Madrid and Barcelona-, the Sevillean studio MGM Arquitectos stands out among this new batch of Spanish architects, adding a peripheral condition of sorts to the substratum of good workmanship. MGM’s outstanding work with skins and their materials is not restricted to merely epidermal issues, but rather envelops and contains a whole series of intermediary spaces that are neither exterior nor interior, that give an added value to both apartment and public buildings, and pick up in turn on a whole tradition of intermediary spaces typical of Andalusian architecture.

Book Punto de Vista and the Argentine Intellectual Left

Download or read book Punto de Vista and the Argentine Intellectual Left written by Sofía Mercader and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-09-20 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first comprehensive account of the Argentine magazine Punto de Vista (1978–2008), a cultural review that gathered together prominent Argentine intellectuals throughout the last quarter of the twentieth century. Directed by cultural historian and public intellectual Beatriz Sarlo, the story of the magazine serves as a lens to study the evolution of Argentine intellectuals from the leftist mobilization of the 1960s through periods of military dictatorship and then the shifting politics of democratization in the 1980s and 1990s. The book argues that the way in which the Argentine intellectual left negotiated the political and cultural transformations of the late twentieth century can be understood as the history of two political defeats: that of the revolutionary utopias of the 1960s and 1970s and that of the social democrat project in the 1980s. By adopting an interdisciplinary approach, this book encompasses a wide range of debates taking place in Argentina, from the years prior to the dictatorship to the postdictatorship period.
