Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986 (IRCA) was a manifestation of widespread public concern over the volume of undocumented immigration into the United States. The principal innovation of this legislation-the provision to impose penalties on employers who knowingly hire undocumented immigrants-was a response to this concern. This effort at restriction was tempered in IRCA by other provisions permitting the legalization of two types of undocumented immigrantsthose who had resided in the United States since January 1, 1982; and what were called special agricultural workers (SAWs), persons who had worked in perishable crop agriculture for at least 90 days during specified periods from 1983 to 1986. Approximately 3.1 million persons sought legalization (what is popularly referred to as amnesty) under these two provisions. The breakdown was roughly 1.8 million under the regular program and 1.3 million as SAWs. Mexicans made up 75 percent of the combined legalization requests."

Book Debt Crisis Reform Bolivia

Download or read book Debt Crisis Reform Bolivia written by L. Jemio and published by Springer. This book was released on 2001-08-03 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Luis Carlos Jemio analyses the macroeconomic events that took place in Bolivia between 1970 and 1995. In that time, the Bolivian economy moved from severe indebtedness and profound economic crisis to a period of economic stability and structural reform. He emphasizes the varying nature of sectoral adjustment behaviours, in response to shocks and policies, and the changes in policies to deal with external shocks over time. The structural reforms implemented after 1985 show the supreme effort the country has made to apply coherent economic policies after a long period of indebtedness and crisis.

Book Restructuring Domination

Download or read book Restructuring Domination written by Catherine M Conaghan and published by Pittsburgh, Pa. : University of Pittsburgh Press. This book was released on 1988 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The industrial development of Ecuador has made fortunes for some, but has largely bypassed the general population. Armed by its new power, the bourgeoisie has captured sate mechanisms for its own advancement, leading to the paradox of a “democratic authoritarianism.” In this study, Catherine M. Conaghan views the crucial differences between the social and economic changes in newly developed Latin American nations and those of the southern cone. Using Ecuador as her case study, she shows how industrial growth has given birth to an exclusive, ingrown bourgeoisie that is highly dependent on the state and foreign capital and is increasingly alienated from the peasants and urban poor.
