Book excerpt: Los "RECUERDOS DE MI INFANCIA", tienen su origen en La Trinidad de Rio Chico, un Rancho pequeño situado en el estado de Jalisco, México, yo nací en la capital de México, pero parte de mi familia vivió y vive aun en Rio Chico, y aunque la casa principal de mis recuerdos ahora esta deshabitada, en el tiempo de mi infancia Vivian en ella mi tía Cecilia Chávez y su familia, entre el río y la casa de mi tía Cecilia había un árbol relativamente grande, en una ocasión llego al árbol un enjambre de abejas buscando un lugar apropiado para establecerse, (de ahí nació la idea del nido del árbol grande ), sin más, mi tía y los de mas anfi triones, corrieron al árbol con cubetas, botes, o cualquier otra cosa que hiciera ruido y comenzaron a golpear gritar y chifl ar, los de más los seguimos haciendo lo mismo, aunque yo no hacía mucho ruido, solo estaba estupefacto por el tumulto y tratando de entender lo que pasaba. Hasta el día de hoy, no estoy seguro si era para que se fueran y no nos picaran, o si era para que se quedaran y tener un acceso fácil a la miel, aunque yo creo que la razón del ruido era lo de la miel. Así de inadecuados éramos los citadinos en el rancho, en un mundo completamente diferente, en ocasiones hasta podríamos parecer un poco patéticos, pero lo que pasaba era simplemente que estamos en un elemento diferente, frio y más duro, pero aun así, maravilloso y encantador, para nosotros todo era novedad y diversión. Ahora el rancho está muy cambiado, ya hay luz eléctrica, agua potable y muchas comodidades que no existieron en ese tiempo, lo que lo hacia el lugar ideal para pasar las vacaciones. Yo en lo particular prefi ero recordarlo así como antes era, el rancho de mi tía Cecilia.

Gelman was a child of Yiddish-speaking Ukrainian immigrants, and a significant, seldom recognized portion of his poetry dealt with Jewish themes. He established a dialogue across time with Santa Teresa de Ávila and San Juan de la Cruz, the sixteenth-century Spanish mystical poets whose ancestry was also Jewish. He rewrote portions of the Bible, medieval Hebrew poetry, and even taught himself Ladino, the language of Sephardic Jews, and wrote a book of poems in it. In this bilingual volume, celebrated scholar Ilan Stavans retraces Gelman’s regard for these poetic ancestors, translating into English his Jewish oeuvre by carefully preserving the Hebrew, Spanish, and Ladino echoes of the originals.
