A través de esta investigación se pretende contribuir a la discusión sobre modelos de formación sostenible y pertinente, para aportar a la mejora de la docencia universitaria desde una perspectiva innovadora. Se introduce el uso de un portafolio digital, herramienta poderosa para el registro de evidencias de un proceso de desarrollo de aprendizaje, que puede llevar a una reflexión sistemática de la práctica docente. El marco teórico parte del debate actual sobre la formación docente universitaria, profundiza sobre el concepto de práctica reflexiva en la docencia, y analiza la evolución de los portafolios y su uso en el ámbito educativo. La metodología de investigación adoptada ha sido un estudio instrumental de caso, pues se pretendía conocer en profundidad una experiencia educativa para comprender su naturaleza y obtener datos para poder diseñar propuestas de formación docente más acordes con las necesidades del contexto y de las personas involucradas. Los resultados obtenidos muestran que el proceso reflexivo, con unas directrices bien definidas, contribuyó a una percepción positiva sobre la mejora de su docencia, la planificación de sus clases y una mejor interacción con los alumnos. Asimismo, nuestro estudio nos ha hecho descubrir carencias, sobre todo en relación con los niveles de profundidad de la reflexión realizada por los profesores.
