Download or read book Calhan written by Percy Conarroe and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2017-12-04 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of Calhan, Colorado and the childhood experiences of Percy Conarroe are chronicled in this charming autobiography. While Percy was growing up, Calhan was located on the remote, windswept plains east of Colorado Springs. It's since been swallowed up by a growing population that's moved steadily eastward from the Front Range. Percy's coming-of-age memories are recorded, including his first date, learning about sex, and stirring up trouble with his best friends. Calhan was founded in 1888, concurrently with laying the track from Limon to Colorado Springs for the Chicago, Rock Island & Pacific railroad. The settlement was originally named Calahan, after a contractor who built this section of track, but later shortened to Calhan "to accommodate scarce printing space on railroad timetables." The Calhan settlement became incorporated as a Colorado municipality on May 10, 1919.

Book Halophytes as a resource for livestock and for rehabilitation of degraded lands

Download or read book Halophytes as a resource for livestock and for rehabilitation of degraded lands written by V. Squires and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Desertification (land degradation in arid, semi-arid and dry sub-humid areas resulting mainly from adverse human impacts) is the main environmental problem of dry lands, which occupy more than 40 per cent of the total global land area. The phenomenon threatens about 3.6 billion hectares and currently affects the livelihood of about 900 million people. Thl! world is now losing annually about 1.5 million hectares of total irrigated lands (240 million hectares) due mostly to salinization, mainly in drylands. Salt affected soils are widely distributed throughout the arid and semi-arid regions, and particularly severe in China (7 million ha), India (20 million ha), Pakistan (3.2 million ha), USA (5.2 million ha), as well as Near East, southern Europe and elsewhere. Demands on production have increased the pressure on existing productive land and moved the limits of production onto increasingly marginal lands. Wise land-use practices have yet to be developed for such conditions. The Executive Director of UNEP reported to the Governing Council in February 1992 concerning the "Status of Desertification and Implementation of the United Nations Plan of Action to Comtat Desertification (PACD)". The Report concludes that major efforts to implement the PACD had gJne into supporting measures rather than concrete corrective field operations. Little evidence of progrl!ss was found in irrigated croplands, rainfed croplands or rangelands. It was recommended that every piece of land should be used in keeping with its ecological characteristics, natural capabilities and constraints.

Book Mortality of Aspen on the Gros Ventre Elk Winter Range

Download or read book Mortality of Aspen on the Gros Ventre Elk Winter Range written by Richard G. Krebill and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stands of aspen on the Gros Ventre elk winter range of northwestern Wyoming are suffering high mortality and are not regenerating satisfactorily. If the 1970 mortality rate (3.6 percent) continues, about a two-thirds reduction in the numbers of tree-sized aspen can be expected by year 2000. Collected evidence suggests that the mortality rate is unusually high because of a combination of pathogenic fungi, injurious insects, and physiological stress that follow bark wounding of tree trunks. Elk and possibly moose are suspected of causing most of these severe trunk injuries. Sooty bark canker, Cytospora canker, and stem-boring insects were the most common pests associated with tree mortality. The prospect for aspen on the elk winter range is especially critical because of the heavy impact of browsing and pests on aspen sprouts which prohibits natural replacement of the dying aspen overstory.
