Book Pope Francis

Download or read book Pope Francis written by Mario I Aguilar and published by Lutterworth Press. This book was released on 2014-05-29 with total page 89 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pope Francis: His Life and Thought paints a compelling picture of a truly remarkable pope, considering his life in detail until his election as Pope Francis in 2013. Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio was a highly unusual candidate for the papacy for two main reasons: the 'pope from far away' is the first non-European to be elected, and, furthermore, he began his career as a Jesuit, one of 'God's soldiers'. Members of the order traditionally do not ascend the hierarchy of the Church, and it took a personal request from Pope John Paul II for Bergoglio to leave the Society of Jesus and accept his appointment as bishop. Bergoglio's theological principles have been profoundly shaped by these two factors. However, the author also reveals that the evolution of his thought was deeply affected by his simple Argentinean upbringing and his fearless work in the slums of Buenos Aires as a young Jesuit and as a senior member of the Church. Bergoglio has consistently emphasised the importance of alleviatingthe suffering of the poor, following the teaching of Vatican II, and in keeping with his own unflinching morality. This volume reveals Pope Francis as remarkably humble and altruistic man, doctrinally conservative, and engaged less in politics thanin the struggle to re-centre the Church at the margins of society. It will be of great interest to any reader who wishes to know more about this inspiring individual.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The series Religion and Society (RS) contributes to the exploration of religions as social systems- both in Western and non-Western societies; in particular, it examines religions in their differentiation from, and intersection with, other cultural systems, such as art, economy, law and politics. Due attention is given to paradigmatic case or comparative studies that exhibit a clear theoretical orientation with the empirical and historical data of religion and such aspects of religion as ritual, the religious imagination, constructions of tradition, iconography, or media. In addition, the formation of religious communities, their construction of identity, and their relation to society and the wider public are key issues of this series.

Book Brazil Land of the Past The Ideological Roots of the New Right

Download or read book Brazil Land of the Past The Ideological Roots of the New Right written by Georg Wink and published by Bibliotopía. This book was released on 2021-12-01 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Brazil, Land of the Past scrutinizes the ideological roots of the so-called New Right in Brazil. The book traces the continuity and resilience of a system of thought based on the idea of a God-given hierarchical order to be defended against any social contract and modernizing relativization. It explains in detail how today a diverse movement — which includes actors ranging from the authoritarian Bolsonaro wing to economic liberals to the military to both Catholic and evangelical religious conservatives – assumes unanimously the ideas of this tradition as underlying premises of their political action. Though not always explicitly, this drives the self-declared “liberal-conservative” but rather anti-modernist reaction which claims to liberate an imaginary authentic “Brazil” from an aberrant “State” – and in so doing intends to preserve inherited privilege in an extremely unequal society.

Book The Oxford Handbook of Latin American Christianity

Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of Latin American Christianity written by David Thomas Orique and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2020-03-23 with total page 626 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By 2025, Latin America's population of observant Christians will be the largest in the world. Nonetheless, studies examining the exponential growth of global Christianity tend to overlook this region, focusing instead on Africa and Asia. Research on Christianity in Latin America provides a core point of departure for understanding the growth and development of Christianity in the "Global South." In The Oxford Handbook of Latin American Christianity an interdisciplinary contingent of scholars examines Latin American Christianity in all of its manifestations from the colonial to the contemporary period. The essays here provide an accessible background to understanding Christianity in Latin America. Spanning the era from indigenous and African-descendant people's conversion to and transformation of Catholicism during the colonial period through the advent of Liberation Theology in the 1960s and conversion to Pentecostalism and Charismatic Catholicism, The Oxford Handbook of Latin American Christianity is the most complete introduction to the history and trajectory of this important area of modern Christianity.

Book Perspectives on Artificial Intelligence in Times of Turbulence Theoretical Background to Applications

Download or read book Perspectives on Artificial Intelligence in Times of Turbulence Theoretical Background to Applications written by Geada, Nuno and published by IGI Global. This book was released on 2023-11-17 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Perspectives on Artificial Intelligence in Times of Turbulence: Theoretical Background to Applications offers a comprehensive exploration of the intricate relationship between artificial intelligence (AI) and the ever-changing landscape of our society. The book defines AI as machines capable of performing tasks that were once exclusive to human cognition. However, it emphasizes the current limitations of AI, dispelling the notion of sophisticated cyborgs depicted in popular culture. These machines lack self-awareness, struggle with understanding context—especially in language—and are constrained by historical data and predefined parameters. This distinction sets the stage for examining AI's impact on the job market and the evolving roles of humans and machines. Rather than portraying AI as a threat, this book highlights the symbiotic relationship between humans and machines. It recognizes that while certain jobs may become obsolete, new opportunities will emerge. The unique abilities of human beings—such as relational skills, emotional intelligence, adaptability, and understanding of differences—will continue to be indispensable in a rapidly transforming society. Its perspectives cover a wide range of topics such as business sustainability, change management, cybersecurity, digital economy and transformation, information systems management, management models and tools, and continuous improvement are comprehensively addressed. Additionally, the book delves into healthcare, telemedicine, Health 4.0, privacy and security, knowledge management, learning, and presents real-world case studies. Designed for researchers and professionals seeking to enhance their knowledge and research capabilities, this book offers a consistent theoretical and practical foundation. It serves as a springboard for further studies, supports change management initiatives within organizations, and facilitates knowledge sharing among experts. This book is an essential companion for colleges with master's and Ph.D. degree investigators, and researchers across a wide range of disciplines.

Book Abuse in the Latin American Church

Download or read book Abuse in the Latin American Church written by Véronique Lecaros and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-04-01 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses the crisis of sexual abuse in the Roman Catholic Church in Latin America, the region of the world with the highest percentage of Catholics. Bringing together research from across the continent, it demonstrates that abuse within the Church is indeed a global phenomenon, though abuses have taken different forms according to varying sociocultural contexts. With attention to abuses committed against children, women and vulnerable adults – by both men and women – within the settings of parishes, new religious movements and international religious organizations, it also raises questions of justice, asking how to assess the suffering of victims, how to deal with abusers and how to prevent abuses. It will therefore be of interest to scholars of religious studies, sociology, Latin American studies, criminology, theology, and religious leaders with interests in the abuses and scandals that have been revealed in the worldwide Church.

Book The Political Theology of Pope Francis

Download or read book The Political Theology of Pope Francis written by Ole Jakob Løland and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-12-30 with total page 117 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the political dimension of Pope Francis’ theology from a variety of perspectives and makes a unique contribution to the ongoing historiography of his pontificate. It defines the concept of political theology when applied to Pope Francis’ discourse and reflects on the portrayal of him as the voice of Latin America, a great reformer and a revolutionary. The chapters offer a thorough investigation of core texts and key moments in Pope Francis’ papacy (2013-), focusing in particular on their relation to canon theory, liberation theology, the rise of populism, and gender issues. As well as documenting some of the continuities between the ideas of Pope Francis and his predecessor Benedict XVI, the author asks what the Argentinian pontiff has brought from Latin America and considers the Latin American dimension to what has become known as the ‘Francis effect’. Overall, the book demonstrates how the Pope’s words and actions constitute a powerful political theology disseminated from a unique religious and institutional position. It will be of interest to scholars of theology, religion, and politics, particularly those with a focus on world Catholicism, political theology, and church history.

Download or read book Frontiers of Possession written by Tamar Herzog and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2015-01-06 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A “lucid” analysis of the territorial formation of Spain and Portugal in both Europe and the Americas (Publishers Weekly). Frontiers of Possession asks how territorial borders were established in Europe and the Americas during the early modern period and challenges the standard view that national boundaries are largely determined by military conflicts and treaties. Focusing on Spanish and Portuguese claims in the New and Old Worlds, Tamar Herzog reconstructs the different ways land rights were negotiated and enforced, sometimes violently, among people who remembered old possessions or envisioned new ones: farmers and nobles, clergymen and missionaries, settlers and indigenous peoples. Questioning the habitual narrative that sees the Americas as a logical extension of the Old World, Herzog portrays Spain and Portugal on both sides of the Atlantic as one unified imperial space. She begins in the Americas, where Iberian conquerors had to decide who could settle the land, who could harvest fruit and cut timber, and who had river rights for travel and trade. The presence of indigenous peoples as enemies to vanquish or allies to befriend, along with the vastness of the land, complicated the picture, as did the promise of unlimited wealth. In Europe, meanwhile, the formation and re-formation of boundaries could last centuries, as ancient entitlements clashed with evolving economic conditions and changing political views and juridical doctrines regarding how land could be acquired and maintained. Herzog demonstrates that the same fundamental questions had to be addressed in Europe and in the Americas. Territorial control was always subject to negotiation, as neighbors and outsiders, in their quotidian interactions, carved out and defended new frontiers of possession. Praise for Frontiers of Possession “Herzog succeeds in her aim of moving beyond the usually separate histories of Spain and Portugal—and of Europe and the Americas—to complicate the accepted understanding of national and imperial boundaries as immutable facts rather than as ongoing sites of contestation.” —William O’Connor, The Daily Beast “This book is about as thorough a research work as this reviewer has ever encountered . . . This is a truly innovative and well-documented interpretation of this topic.” —D. L. Tengwall, Choice “The best account we now have of the long legal and political rivalry between the world’s first modern imperial powers.” —Anthony Pagden, author of The Enlightenment and Why It Still Matters
