How do the conventions of the crime story shape not only the production of national and cultural identities, but also their disruption? Combining criminological theories of crime and community with an analysis of the genre’s conventions, this study challenges the simple classification of Spanish crime fiction as texts written by Spaniards, set in Spain and with Spanish characters. Instead, it develops a dramatic new reading practice which allows for a greater understanding of the role of crime fiction in the construction and articulation of different and, at times, competing, national and cultural identities, including in the Basque Country, Catalonia and Galicia. However, scholarship remains pending on women's contributions to Spanish national agendas. This book addresses the visions of history, culture, and national identity articulated by Rosario de Acuna (1851-1923), angela Figuera (1902-1984), and Rosa Chacel (1898-1994). Their works elucidate the contested formation of Spanish democracy and the gendered politics of culture. Types of liberalism in late nineteenth-century Spain are debated in Acuna's theater and essays in part 1. Figuera's poetry, the focus of part 2, highlights the notion of history as trauma resulting from the Spanish Civil War and Franco dictatorship, to privilege the recovery of historical memory. Part 3 explores Chacel's re-invention, in Barrio de Maravillas and Acropolis, of the liberal cultures of early twentieth-century Spain, from within a post-Franco era eager to reclaim those histories. The conclusion addresses the relevance of the writers' projects for present-day Spain. Christine Arkinstall is Associate Professor in Spanish at The University of Auckland.

In recent years film scholarship has attempted to negotiate the tension between the nationally specific and the internationally ubiquitous, discussing how globalisation has influenced film making and surrounding cultural practice. These broader social concerns have prompted scholars to emphasise a redefinition of national cinemas beyond strict national boundaries and to pay attention to the transnational character of any national site of film production and reception. This collection provides a thorough investigation of contemporary Spanish cinema within a transnational framework, by positing cinematic genres as the meeting spaces between a variety of diverse forces that necessarily operate within but also across territorial spaces.
