Book Histories Cultures and National Identities

Download or read book Histories Cultures and National Identities written by Christine Arkinstall and published by Bucknell University Press. This book was released on 2009 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Issues around national identities have been central in Hispanism in recent years. However, scholarship remains pending on women's contributions to Spanish national agendas. This book addresses the visions of history, culture, and national identity articulated by Rosario de Acuna (1851-1923), angela Figuera (1902-1984), and Rosa Chacel (1898-1994). Their works elucidate the contested formation of Spanish democracy and the gendered politics of culture. Types of liberalism in late nineteenth-century Spain are debated in Acuna's theater and essays in part 1. Figuera's poetry, the focus of part 2, highlights the notion of history as trauma resulting from the Spanish Civil War and Franco dictatorship, to privilege the recovery of historical memory. Part 3 explores Chacel's re-invention, in Barrio de Maravillas and Acropolis, of the liberal cultures of early twentieth-century Spain, from within a post-Franco era eager to reclaim those histories. The conclusion addresses the relevance of the writers' projects for present-day Spain. Christine Arkinstall is Associate Professor in Spanish at The University of Auckland.

Book Modernity and Whiteness

Download or read book Modernity and Whiteness written by Bolivar Echeverria and published by Polity. This book was released on 2019-11-11 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bolívar Echeverría was one of the leading philosophers and critical theorists in Latin America and his work on capitalism and modernity offers a distinctive account, informed by the experiences of Latin American societies, of the social and historical forces shaping the modern world. For Echeverría, capitalism and modernity do not coincide: modernity is a long-term historical phenomenon that involved a new set of relations between human beings and nature and between the individual and the collective, while capitalism is a particular form in which modernity has been realized. As Marx showed, capitalism is a mode of reproduction that involves the growing commodification of social life – everything, even human labor power itself, is turned into a commodity. Echeverría introduces the notion of blanquitud or “whiteness” to capture the new form of identity that is brought into being by the totalizing and homogenizing character of capitalism. While blanquitud includes certain ethnic features, it is not so much an ethnic category as an ethical and cultural one, referring to a type of human being, homo capitalisticus, which threatens to spread throughout the world, overcoming and integrating identities that might otherwise resist it. But capitalism is not the only form of modernity – there are alternative modernities. In the final part of the book Echeverría explores the baroque as a characteristic of Latin American identity and sees it as a way of theatricalizing and transforming reality that takes some distance from Eurocentric paradigms and resists the homogenizing forces of capitalism. Echeverría’s analysis of the dynamics of capitalism and modernity represents one of the most important contributions to critical theory from a Latin American perspective. It will be of great interest to students and scholars of critical theory and postcolonial theory and anyone concerned with the global impact of capitalism on social and cultural life.

  • Pages : 324 pages

Download or read book Reescrituras written by Luz Rodríguez Carranza and published by Rodopi. This book was released on 2004 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book The Social Outburst and Political Representation in Chile

Download or read book The Social Outburst and Political Representation in Chile written by Bernardo Navarrete and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-07-16 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book in English to present a comprehensive analysis of the October 2019 social outbreak in Chile and its consequences for the country’s political system. For almost 30 years (1990-2019), Chile was recognized as a model of political and economic stability in Latin America, but the 2019 protests put into question the whole structure of representation based on programmatic political parties. This contributed volume analyzes the causes of the social outbreak by examining the interaction between political parties and social movements in Chile since 2000, establishing bridges between the sociology of social movements and the political science of parties and forms of traditional political representation. The book is organized in three parts. The first part analyzes the collapse of the political party system in Chile. The second part shows how social movements introduced innovative forms of political mobilization that challenged the traditional forms of political representation. Finally, the third part presents case studies focusing on specific social movements and their contributions to the renewal of political representation in Chile. The Social Outburst and Political Representation in Chile will be a valuable resource for sociologists, political scientists and other social scientists interested in understanding the challenges posed to political parties and institutions by social movements formed by citizens who no longer see themselves represented by the traditional forms political participation.

Book Sobre el concepto de barbarie

Download or read book Sobre el concepto de barbarie written by Gilbert Keith Chesterton and published by Editorial Renacimiento. This book was released on 2012-10-30 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
