Book excerpt: According to data available at this time the first draughts book written in Valencia in 1547 was titled El Ingenio o juego de marro, de punta o Damas. This is indicated by Nicolao Antonio, Bibliotheca Hispana Vetus, 1696 Volume I, page 165. I am able to write about this draughts book, because I came to possession of a copy of this book. The cost was rather high, but it was worthwhile to fly to Amsterdam in 1988 to obtain this copy, of which the original is now in unknown hands in Madrid. The positions of the diagrams, letters, and language that I could reproduce here are nearly identical to the original book, thus diagrams with almost the same nice decoration and with almost the same old Spanish letters and the same language of the XV century. Furthermore I reproduced the same positions of the diagrams, thus using the white squares for the pawns and having the long diagonal on the right hand. The drawing of the pawns and Dama are exactly the same as appearing in the original book.

This 21 year-old Senegalese drew a lot of attention in Paris in 1910 when he won against all challengers in his store located in the Senegalese village of the Exposition of Jardin d'Acclimatation zoologique. No one understood how this player could win all the games that fast. After Amadou Kandie Woldouby was the second African who participated in a checkers tournament in Paris since he became the city champion in 1911. In 1911 he left France and no one knew his whereabouts since then. In this biography we show that Weiss' golpe (shot) actually was Woldouby's golpe, since he won against Isidore Weiss with it. On the other hand we want to show that Woldouby returned to Senegal in 1911 to take the place of a checkers runner-up in 1913. His biography deserves a worthy place in the history of checkers, as he was the prominent predecessor of the famous Senegalese checkers player Baba Sy.

In other words we can state here that we have been studying Spanish history and its chess literature for over 30 years. Since 2003 we have also known the development of the new bishop in chess."

These new rules quickly spread throughout western Europe and in Spain. The enhanced move for the chess queen started after the coronation of the powerfull queen of Spain Isabella I. The historical records duly note that Queen Isabella I was crowned with the sword of justice raised in front of her, and the sceptre and throne were given to her. This allusion to the real-world event is so clear within the Scachs d'Amor poem to Isabella's actual coronation that the inspiration of Queen Isabella for the new chess queen and powerfull dama of the draughts game is unquestionable. The Spaniards like the Moors, played a game on the board of lines and called it alquerque. The game became modern draughts through being transferred to the chessboard around that time. Book excerpt: El libro de Juan Timoneda, publicado en Tolosa en 1635, sigue siendo misterioso y podemos considerarlo una gran joya de la literatura española, puesto que es el primer libro a nivel mundial que describe ampliamente el juego de las damas. A pesar de que data de 1635, los que saben algo de literatura española descubren inmediatamente que Juan de Timoneda no estaba vivo en 1635, y que comenzó a publicar en Valencia en el año 1547.La fecha de 1547 es justamente aquella en la que, según los historiadores, Antonio de Torquemada escribió el primer libro en el mundo del Juego de Damas. Fechar los textos del libro de 1635 en 1547 sucitó lógicamente protestas de destacados historiadores, pero los hechos dejaron finalmente a Timoneda en su verdadero lugar. Por otro lado se pudo demostrar documentalmente que Antonio de Torquemada nunca escribió un libro sobre el juego de damas. La causa fue un error por parte del gran Nicolás Antonio en su Bibliotheca Hispana Nova (Tomo primero, Roma, 1696). Tal honor corresponde efectivamente a Juan de Timoneda en Valencia en 1547. A pesar de que los libros españoles del juego de damas (1591, 1597, 1635) demuestran claramente que en España se escribió sobre el tema antes que en Francia, prácticamente todo el mundo sigue al famoso experto de juegos de tablero, Murray, que defiende el origen francés del juego de damas, él asegura que la descripción más vieja del juego fue dada por Mallet. Sin embargo, el libro francés se imprimió en 1668. Es decir, 100 años después de la primera edición de aquel de Juan de Timoneda en 1547. El libro francés era una voluminosa obra de unas 450 páginas, escrita por el ingeniero Mallet, en la que se refieren a una variedad de cosas excepto a lo que realmente interesaba a los jugadores: "cómo jugar bien a las damas". En el libro francés escrito en 1668, el manejo del tema y el nivel técnico del juego es lamentable; mientras que en los libros españoles ocurre todo lo contrario, el nivel técnico allí es superior tanto en las composiciones como en las salidas. Observamos en el libro de Timoneda una notación alfabética y no numérica, al igual que en los libros españoles posteriores a 1547. Esta es otra prueba de la antigüedad de los textos del libro de 1635. El ingenio o juego de Marro, de punta, o damas es el título, y nos enseña cómo el juego se llamaba en 1547, y con la adición o damas, como se llamaba en 1635 cuando el término el juego de las damas hizo su entrada. Esto también implica que antiguamente se jugaba sin damas y que en El ingenio o juego de Marro, de punta era un juego que se jugaba diagonalmente, y que era una herencia del juego de alquerque de doce; en este caso las 12 piezas del juego de alquerque de doce se trasladaron al tablero de ajedrez, a finales del siglo XV. Otra rareza que destaca son las damas hechas que observamos en las composiciones. Como el juego era nuevo en Valencia, tal como indicaba Timoneda "nuestro Marro de Punta" y Lorenzo Valls "nuestro Juego de Damas (vulgarmente llamado del Marro), se comenzó a jugar al inicio de la partida con una o dos damas que cada color ponía en la primera fila del tablero. Tal hecho resultó con el tiempo lógicamente en composiciones con una o dos damas aparte de los peones. Con el fin de que los golpes tuviesen provecho, y se pudiese apreciar su resplandor, se estableció en las reglas que capturar era obligatorio, so pena de que se pierda la partida. Sabido es que los largos textos de los libros antiguos sobre el juego de damas son difíciles de leer y comprender. Realmente hacen falta libros con una notación moderna para poder captar inmediatamente las jugadas. Con esta obra esperamos hacer nuestra modesta aportación para cubrir ese hueco y facilitar el proceso de comprensión de estos libros antiguos de los siglos XVI-XX, que tanto mérito tienen por haber demostrado la superioridad y adelanto de España con respecto a otras naciones.
