Book Adjustment and Social Sector Restructuring

Download or read book Adjustment and Social Sector Restructuring written by Jessica M. Vivian and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 1995 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Social policy in developing countries has been substantially affected in recent years by economic crisis and structural adjustment, and perhaps more importantly, by the ascendance of neo-liberal ideology. By the late 1980s, the adverse effects of adjustment had become clear, and the resulting political opposition led many governments and their external supporters to design programmes meant to 'mitigate the social costs' of adjustment. The most visible of these are the 'social fund' or 'safety net' measures intended not only to address the social impacts of adjustment, but also to improve their social and political acceptability. In addition, they are seen by some as providing a model for new, more efficient and effective means of providing social service. This volume examines the goals, assumptions, impacts and possible long-term outcomes of social policy trends in developing countries.

Book Do the Poor Count

Download or read book Do the Poor Count written by Michelle M. Taylor-Robinson and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2015-11-05 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Latin America’s flirtation with neoliberal economic restructuring in the 1980s and 1990s (the so-called Washington Consensus strategy) had the effect of increasing income inequality throughout the region. The aim of this economic policy was in part to create the conditions for stable democracy by ensuring efficient economic use of resources, both human and capital, but the widening gap between rich and poor threatened to undermine political stability. At the heart of the dilemma faced by these new democracies is the question of accountability: Are all citizens equally capable of holding the government accountable if it does not represent their interests? In this book, Michelle Taylor-Robinson investigates both the formal institutions of democracy (such as electoral rules and the design of the legislative and executive branches) and informal institutions (such as the nomination procedures of political parties and patron-client relationships) to see what incentives legislators have to pay attention to the needs of poor people and thereby adequately represent their interests.

Book Blood of Extraction

Download or read book Blood of Extraction written by Todd Gordon and published by Fernwood Publishing. This book was released on 2016-12-07T00:00:00Z with total page 507 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rooted in thousands of pages of Access to Information documents and dozens of interviews carried out throughout Latin America, Blood of Extraction examines the increasing presence of Canadian mining companies in Latin America and the environmental and human rights abuses that have occurred as a result. By following the money, Gordon and Webber illustrate the myriad ways Canadian-based multinational corporations, backed by the Canadian state, have developed extensive economic interests in Latin America over the last two decades at the expense of Latin American people and the environment. Latin American communities affected by Canadian resource extraction are now organized into hundreds of opposition movements, from Mexico to Argentina, and the authors illustrate the strategies used by the Canadian state to silence this resistance and advance corporate interests.

Book Transformation Index BTI 2012 Regional Findings Latin America and the Caribbean

Download or read book Transformation Index BTI 2012 Regional Findings Latin America and the Caribbean written by Bertelsmann Stiftung and published by Verlag Bertelsmann Stiftung. This book was released on 2012-06-27 with total page 873 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. The peaceful transition of authoritarian regimes towards democracy and a market economy poses enormous challenges for citizens and politicians alike. Around the world, under widely differing conditions and with varying degrees of success, reform-oriented groups are struggling to democratize their countries and to strengthen the market economy. Good governance is the decisive factor for the success or failure of any transition process. The Bertelsmann Stiftung's Transformation Index is published every two years. The global ranking measures and compares transition processes worldwide on the basis of detailed country reports. Comparing systematically the status of democracy and market economy on an international basis, the BTI also provides comprehensive data on the quality of political management.

Book Indigenous Peoples Poverty and Human Development in Latin America

Download or read book Indigenous Peoples Poverty and Human Development in Latin America written by Gillette Hall and published by Springer. This book was released on 2005-12-13 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Indigenous people constitute a large portion of Latin America's population and suffer from widespread poverty. This book provides the first rigorous assessment of changes in socio-economic conditions among the region's indigenous people, tracking progress in these indicators during the first international decade of indigenous peoples (1994-2004). Set within the context of existing literature and political changes over the course of the decade, this volume provides a rigorous statistical analysis of indigenous populations in Bolivia, Ecuador, Guatemala, Mexico and Peru, examining their poverty rates, education levels, income determinants, labour force participation and other social indicators. The results show that while improvements have been achieved in some social indicators, little progress has been made with respect to poverty.

Book From Right to Reality

Download or read book From Right to Reality written by Helena Ribe and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2012-03-13 with total page 455 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study highlights the interaction between social protection (SP) programs and labor markets in the Latin America region. It presents new evidence on the limited coverage of existing programs and emphasizes the challenges caused by high informality for achieving universal social protection for old age income, health, unemployment risks and anti-poverty safety nets. It identifies interaction effects between SP programs and the behavioral responses of workers, firms and social protection providers, which can further undermine efforts to expand coverage, summarizing evidence from recent work across the region. The book argues for a re-design of financing to eliminate cross subsidies between members of contributory programs and subsidies that effectively tax income from formal employment. It advocates well-targeted, tax-funded, tapered subsidies to provide incentives to the savings efforts of low-income workers, coupled with an effective safety net for the extreme poor who have no capacity to contribute to financing their own social protection arrangements. It also argues for the consolidation of programs and harmonization of benefits packages across different insurers. The book develops an overall conceptual framework and presents in-depth analysis of the main SP sectors of pensions, health, unemployment insurance and labor market programs, and safety net transfers.
