Es innegable que dicho fenómeno, se vive en Europa con cierto recelo y preocupación debido a sus consecuencias. Las personas que viven en Europa representan una gran variedad cultural y personal; las diferencias culturales y sociales afectan en gran medida a la propia diversidad de los valores occidentales, que se ven influenciados por los procesos migratorios que acontecen en toda Europa. El trabajo que representa esta tesis quiere centrar y destacar, la importancia que los valores culturales tienen en la explicación de la aceptación o el rechazo de inmigrantes en los diferentes países europeos de nuestra investigación. El estudio que presentamos está basado en el cuestionario realizado a través de la Encuesta Social Europea (2002), y del Cuestionario de Valores Personales de S. Schwartz (Schwartz, 1992, 2001). Finalmente, resaltaremos en las conclusiones de nuestro trabajo, la importancia de los valores culturales como por ejemplo el valor Armonía o Igualitarismo-, como objetivos a desarrollar en cualquiera de las iniciativas y políticas que en materia migratoria desarrolle la Unión Europea, con el fin de poder trabajar en las dificultades que la inmigración representa para Europa.

The conference is the largest scholarly gathering on migration with a global scope. Human mobility, economics, work, employment, integration, insecurity, diversity and minorities, as well as spatial patterns, culture, arts and legal and political aspects appear to be key areas in the current migration debates and research. Throughout the program of the Migration Conference you will find various key thematic areas covered in 598 presentations by 767 contributors coming from all around the world, from Australia to Canada, China to Colombia, Brazil to Korea, and South Africa to Norway. We are proud to bring together experts from universities, independent research organisations, governments, NGOs and the media. We are also proud to bring you opportunities to meet with some of the leading scholars in the field. This year invited speakers include Fiona B. Adamson, Markus Kotzur, Philip L. Martin, Karsten Paerregaard, Ferruccio Pastore, Martin Ruhs, Jeffrey H. Cohen, and Carlos Vargas Silva. Although the main language of the conference is English, this year we will have linguistic diversity as usual and there will be presentations in French, Italian, Spanish and Turkish. The main issues discussed are the principle features of successful integration of North African immigrants into French and Spanish societies and the causes and symptoms of dysfunctional integration; how a partnership network can be established between the Maghreb diaspora in France and Spain and their parent countries, what the obstacles of such a network are and what can be used to develop it; how emigrants of dual nationality are viewed in their countries of origin and how the process of social reintegration can be assured; if dual nationals can play a role in giving an impetus to economic growth in North African countries and if France and Spain can adopt measures to facilitate this process; the respective roles of government and NGOs and international organizations; and how relevant the lessons are that can be learned from this case study to the relationships between other immigrant populations and their host countries. This book includes some suggestions for action discussed in the workshop prior to this publication.

While all were international migrants, their roots spread far and wide. Some were migrant returnees born in Mexico; others had only ever known a life in the United States. All children born in Mexico become returnees upon their arrival in Mexico, while children born in the United States arrive in Mexico for the first time in their lives. Yet in Mexico, the attempt to define these youths' affiliations in relation to their new home is much more complex, yielding new insights into our contemporary understanding of integration and belonging. This book is the product of twenty-five years' worth of rich, interdisciplinary dialogue and research on these children's trajectories, tracing their complex journeys of integration—and the lack thereof—into Mexican society and institutions.

Book excerpt: This research evaluates the impacts of land degradation on rural development and migration, using a comparative-analysis platform and quantitative and qualitative approaches, based on data from empirical investigations in six rural communities of Tapachula, Chiapas. The results show that deforestation, heavy rains and extreme weather events are the main determinants of land degradation, and that land degradation, smallholder farms’ income and outmigration are highly correlated. In addition, they portray a new migration dynamic, from rural areas in the highlands directly to urban centers in the US, and demonstrate that the poverty marginalization context contributes substantially to global migration flows. Despite the harsh labour conditions and the poor economic basis in the area, temporary Guatemalan workers rapidly replace the out-migrated local labour force on coffee plantations and small farms, giving evidence of their life at the fringe of the globalized economy.

Book excerpt: The analytical approaches to studying the region are diverse and evolve as research products appear, as a result of modern systems for collecting, processing and integrating information from the various disciplines. Studies based on political and administrative boundaries, very common in the nineteenth century, move towards the positivist approaches of the twentieth century based on the distribution and organization of demographic and economic factors. Afterwards, the population and its social conditions in terms of infrastructure, economic level and social status are the main object of studies on the regions. The conceptualization of these approaches to study the region enters into crisis with the most recent trends of globalization on industrial and urban geographies (Veltz, 1996; 2008), more visible since the eighties in the last century. The city expands until it overflows into areas without political administrative jurisdiction, giving rise to an urban-rural territorial continuum due to population flows seeking residence, employment, or flows of goods and services. In addition, new territorial identities are built because of ethnic-racial and cultural diversity, and companies are offered new territories to relocate in the midst of this territorial continuum. The rural space is transformed into a new structure and dynamic of economic, social and urban occupation, without necessarily disappearing territories of peasant character in the margins of the region, though they are more articulated to the urban dynamics of the region.

Its main objective is to analyse the diversification and stratification of gendered migratory streams with regard to skill level, labour market integration, and legal status. In turn a migrant’s position in relation to these axes influences access to entitlements and rights. Conceptually, the book builds upon the recent shift in scholarly research on migration, with women-centred research shifting more toward the analysis of gender. Migration is now viewed as a gendered phenomenon that requires more sophisticated theoretical and analytical tools than sex as a dichotomous variable. Theoretical formulations of gender as relational, and as spatially and temporally contextual have begun to inform gendered analyses of migration. The contributions to this book elaborate in more detail the broader social factors that influence migrating women’s and men’s roles, access to resources, facilities and services. Empirically, all major regions are discussed, pointing to common trends such as the increasing significance of the regionalization of migration flows as well as some noteworthy differences.
