La autonomía nacional consiste sobre todo en el derecho a la autodeterminación nacional en relación con los asuntos nacionales, ámbito en el que se plasma la libertad de la nación frente al Estado. El resultado de la aplicación de su teoría es un Estado federal de nacionalidades. Se trata de un clásico imprescindible que anticipa algunas de las ideas discutidas por las actuales teorías del nacionalismo, y cuya importancia está siendo redescubierta por los estudios sobre multiculturalismo y sobre la acomodación de las minorías nacionales.
