Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a fascinating story of 220 pages, through a selection of more than 300 images from 65 archives in America, Europe and Asia; the Mexican Football Federation and Cooperativa La Joplin celebrate, in an unprecedented and playful way, one of the great contributions of Mexico to all humanity: the ball. The first half of the book covers the remote origin of this claim, the symbolism and myth, the culture and art in Mesoamerica to answer all of the questions that may arise for those familiar and unfamiliar with the subject. The second part responds to the immediate question: what about the other balls? These are mainly in Asia and Europe. And the third narrates the evolution of the most popular ball of humanity: the football. And amidst all of this there is a convergence of childhood, math, humor, presidents and passion… Through an investigation of two years, this book celebrates one of the most influential objects in the culture of man, and of course, one of the greatest Mexican legacies. And beyond a history that provides much pride, it entails an ancient sense of joy and fun. Endearing brotherhood: culture and sport.

Book Wearing Culture

    Book Details:
  • Author : Heather Orr
  • Publisher : University Press of Colorado
  • Release : 2013-03-15

Download or read book Wearing Culture written by Heather Orr and published by University Press of Colorado. This book was released on 2013-03-15 with total page 583 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wearing Culture connects scholars of divergent geographical areas and academic fields—from archaeologists and anthropologists to art historians—to show the significance of articles of regalia and of dressing and ornamenting people and objects among the Formative period cultures of ancient Mesoamerica and Central America. Documenting the elaborate practices of costume, adornment, and body modification in Panama, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Honduras, Oaxaca, the Soconusco region of southern Mesoamerica, the Gulf Coast Olmec region (Olman), and the Maya lowlands, this book demonstrates that adornment was used as a tool for communicating status, social relationships, power, gender, sexuality, behavior, and political, ritual, and religious identities. Despite considerable formal and technological variation in clothing and ornamentation, the early indigenous cultures of these regions shared numerous practices, attitudes, and aesthetic interests. Contributors address technological development, manufacturing materials and methods, nonfabric ornamentation, symbolic dimensions, representational strategies, and clothing as evidence of interregional sociopolitical exchange. Focusing on an important period of cultural and artistic development through the lens of costuming and adornment, Wearing Culture will be of interest to scholars of pre-Hispanic and pre-Columbian studies.

Book Sculpture and Social Dynamics in Preclassic Mesoamerica

Download or read book Sculpture and Social Dynamics in Preclassic Mesoamerica written by Julia Guernsey and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2012-07-23 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the functions of sculpture during the Preclassic period in Mesoamerica and its significance in statements of social identity. Julia Guernsey situates the origins and evolution of monumental stone sculpture within a broader social and political context and demonstrates the role that such sculpture played in creating and institutionalizing social hierarchies. This book focuses specifically on an enigmatic type of public, monumental sculpture known as the 'potbelly' that traces its antecedents to earlier, small domestic ritual objects and ceramic figurines. The cessation of domestic rituals involving ceramic figurines along the Pacific slope coincided not only with the creation of the first monumental potbelly sculptures, but with the rise of the first state-level societies in Mesoamerica by the advent of the Late Preclassic period. The potbellies became central to the physical representation of new forms of social identity and expressions of political authority during this time of dramatic change.

Book Rooted Cosmopolitanism Heritage and the Question of Belonging

Download or read book Rooted Cosmopolitanism Heritage and the Question of Belonging written by Lennart Wouter Kruijer and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-03-21 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the analytical and practical value of the notion of "rooted cosmopolitanism" for the field of cultural heritage. Many concepts of present-day heritage discourses - such as World Heritage, local heritage practices, or indigenous heritage - tend to elide the complex interplay between the local and the global - entanglements that are investigated as "glocalisation" in Globalisation Studies. However, no human group ever creates more than a part of its heritage by itself. This book explores an exciting new alternative in scholarly (critical) heritage discourse, the notion of rooted cosmopolitanism, a way of making manifestations of globalised phenomena comprehensible and relevant at local levels. It develops a critical perspective on heritage and heritage practices, bringing together a highly varied yet conceptually focused set of stimulating contributions by senior and emerging scholars working on the heritage of localities across the globe. A contextualising introduction is followed by three strongly theoretical and methodological chapters which complement the second part of the book, six concrete, empirical chapters written in "response" to the more theoretical chapters. Two final reflective conclusions bring together these different levels of analysis. This book will appeal primarily to archaeologists, anthropologists, heritage professionals, and museum curators who are ready to be confronted with innovative and exciting new approaches to the complexities of cultural heritage in a globalising world.

Book Routledge Companion to Sports History

Download or read book Routledge Companion to Sports History written by S. W. Pope and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2009-12-17 with total page 1010 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The field of sports history is no longer a fledgling area of study. There is a great vitality in the field and it has matured dramatically over the past decade. Reflecting changes to traditional approaches, sport historians need now to engage with contemporary debates about history, to be encouraged to position themselves and their methodologies in relation to current epistemological issues, and to promote the importance of reflecting on the literary or poetic dimensions of producing history. These contemporary developments, along with a wealth of international research from a range of theoretical perspectives, provide the backdrop to the new Routledge Companion to Sports History. This book provides a comprehensive guide to the international field of sports history as it has developed as an academic area of study. Readers are guided through the development of the field across a range of thematic and geographical contexts and are introduced to the latest cutting edge approaches within the field. Including contributions from many of the world’s leading sports historians, the Routledge Companion to Sports History is the most important single volume for researchers and students in, and entering, the sports history field. It is an essential guide to contemporary research themes, to new ways of doing sports history, and to the theoretical and methodological foundations of this most fascinating of subjects.
