Download or read book Apostle of Progress written by J. Justin Castro and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2019 with total page 427 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the late nineteenth century to the middle of the twentieth century, Mexico experienced major transformations influenced by a global progressive movement that thrived during the Mexican Revolution and influenced Mexico's development during subsequent governments. Engineers and other revolutionary technocrats were the system builders who drew up the blueprints, printed newspapers, implemented reforms, and constructed complexity--people who built modern Mexico with an eye on remedying long-standing problems through social, material, and infrastructural development during a period of revolutionary change. In Apostle of Progress J. Justin Castro examines the life of Modesto C. Rolland, a revolutionary propagandist and a prominent figure in the development of Mexico, to gain a better understanding of the role engineers played in creating revolution-era policies and the reconstruction of the Mexican nation. Rolland influenced Mexican land reform, petroleum development, stadium construction, port advancements, radio broadcasting, and experiments in political economy. In the telling of Rolland's story, Castro offers a captivating account of the Mexican Revolution and the influence of global progressivism on the development of twentieth-century Mexico.

Book excerpt: This volume offers a description and a deep examination of discourse genres across four disciplines (Psychology, Social Work, Industrial Chemistry, and Construction Engineering), in academic and professional settings. The study is based on one of the largest available corpus on disciplinary written discourse in Spanish (PUCV-2006 Corpus of Spanish containing almost 60 million words). Twelve chapters range from the theoretical guiding principles of the research in terms of genre conception, the detailed description of each corpus (academic and professional), computational analysis from multi-dimensional perspectives, and the qualitative analysis of two specialized genres (University Textbook and Disciplinary Text) in terms of their rhetorical macro-moves and moves. Theoretically speaking, a multi-dimensional perspective (social, linguistic and cognitive) is emphasized and special attention to the cognitive nature of discourse genres is supported.

Download or read book Drawing from the Modern 1880 1945 written by Jodi Hauptman and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While art history has made room for the flurry of movements that emerged in the period following World War II, the myriad artistic developments of the last thirty years have yet to be assigned firm historical categories. Drawing from the Modern, 1975–2005, the final installment in a series of inaugural-year exhibitions produced by the Department of Drawings, attempts to tell a provisional story of the years from 1975 to the present, as reflected through MoMA's singular drawings collection. While making no claims to comprehensiveness, the installation details both the blossoming of different art positions on a broad, international scale in this era, and the coming of age of drawing as an independent—and for many artists, primary—mode of expression.Organized chronologically and in loose clusters of artists working in the same milieu or vein of interest, the exhibition features works by more than fifty artists, including Bruce Nauman, Gerhard Richter, Martin Kippenberger, Marlene Dumas, Gabriel Orozco, Kara Walker, and Luc Tuymans.
