Their fictional work helps us understand how the human and cultural tapestry of the Latinx community is inextricably connected to the spatial transformations taking place in many cities across the country, most notably within the cities in which the narratives take place. The main purpose is to analyze the symbolic realities lived by the characters in order to understand how Latino families and communities are experiencing displacement under instituted neoliberal policies, a process known as development and progress or gentrification. These processes are experienced through aspects of privatization, deregulation, homelessness, residential segregation, inequality, unemployment, and poverty.

Book excerpt: This ambitious work aims to utterly change the way Don Quixote and Cervantes' other works are read, particularly the posthumous The Trial of Persiles and Sigismunda. William Childers sets out to free Cervantes' work from its context within the histories of the European national literatures. Instead, he examines early modern Spanish cultural production as an antecedent to contemporary postcolonial literature, especially Latin American fiction of the past half century. In order to construct his new context for reading Cervantes, Childers proceeds in three distinct phases. First, Cervantes' relation to the Western literary canon is reconfigured, detaching him from the realist novel and associating him, instead, with magic realism. Second, Childers provides an innovative reading of The Trial of Persiles and Sigismunda as a transnational romance, exploring cultural boundaries and the hybridization of identities. Finally, Childers explores traces of and similarities to Cervantes in contemporary fiction. Theoretically eclectic and methodologically innovative, Transnational Cervantes opens up many avenues for research and debate, aiming to bring Cervantes' writings forward into the brave new world of our postcolonial age.

Such Latinized urban landscapes, she observes, especially appear when whites feel threatened by concentrations of Latinx populations, commonly known as barrios. Drawing on archival research, interviews, and visual analysis of barrio built environments, Londoño shows how over the past seventy years urban planners, architects, designers, policy makers, business owners, and other brokers took abstracted elements from barrio design—such as spatial layouts or bright colors—to safely “Latinize” cities and manage a long-standing urban crisis of Latinx belonging. The built environments that resulted ranged from idealized notions of authentic Puerto Rican culture in the interior design of New York City’s public housing in the 1950s, which sought to diminish concerns over Puerto Rican settlement, to the Fiesta Marketplace in downtown Santa Ana, California, built to counteract white flight in the 1980s. Ultimately, Londoño demonstrates that abstracted barrio culture and aesthetics sustain the economic and cultural viability of normalized, white, and middle-class urban spaces.

Es ésta una identidad pendular, en vaivén, que se mueve constantemente entre varias culturas sin permanecer asida a ninguna de ellas y que trasciende las restricciones impuestas por los espacios físicos, nacionales, raciales y culturales. Este estudio analiza la narrativa puertorriqueña de Estados Unidos como vía de expresión de la experiencia migratoria puertorriqueña. Esta narrativa explora a través de un nuevo discurso literario las geografías de la identidad y constituye un espacio estético privilegiado donde es posible crear un puente entre ambas culturas y herencias y donde se representa formalmente una concepción fluida de la identidad puertorriqueña en Estados Unidos. Este discurso literario representa la compleja relación entre patria, hogar y sujeto a través del uso de elementos textuales que son fruto de la hibridez cultural. Algunos de los autores y autoras cuyas obras son objeto de análisis son Piri Thomas, Nicholasa Mohr, Judith Ortiz Cofer, Esmeralda Santiago, Abraham Rodríguez Jr., Ed Vega, Ernesto Quiñónez, Aurora Levins Morales y Rosario Morales.
