Aunque su constitución autónoma como banco central y entidad responsable de la política monetaria se produce con su nacionalización en 1962, sus orígenes se remontan a 1782, cuando se funda el Banco de San Carlos, bajo la protección de la Corona, y se emiten los vales reales, títulos de deuda pública con los que se buscaba aliviar y proveer de liquidez tanto a los particulares como al Estado ante una situación económica acuciante, provocada por la contienda con Inglaterra. Desde estos comienzos esta institución ha recorrido una larga travesía histórica en la que ha pervivido con distintos nombres y ha ocupado diversas sedes: Banco Español de San Fernando (1829), Banco de Isabel II (1844), Nuevo Banco Español de San Fernando (1847) y, por fin, Banco de España (1956). Este volumen recorre su historia desde sus antecedentes y fundación hasta sus tiempos más recientes, desde la Guerra Civil a su etapa actual, cuando se convierte en banco de bancos y logra su integración europea, traspasando sus fronteras nacionales. Un relato histórico que, de manera original, se acompaña además de las biografías de relevantes personalidades: Francisco Cabarrús, Ramón Santillán, el arquitecto Eduardo Adaro, Demetrio Carceller Segura, Joaquín Benjumea y Luis Ángel Rojo, figuras clave relacionadas con una institución que ha sido de vital importancia en la historia económica y política de España.
