Book excerpt: This synchronic study presents a new onomasiological, frame-theoretical model for the description, classification and theoretical analysis of the cross-linguistic content category aspectuality. It deals specifically with those pieces of information, which, in their interplay, constitute the aspectual value of states of affairs. The focus is on Romance Languages, although the model can be applied just as well to other languages, in that it is underpinned by a principle grounded in a fundamental cognitive ability: the delimitation principle. Unlike traditional approaches, which generally have a semasiological orientation and strictly adhere to a semantic differentiation between grammatical aspect and lexical aspect (Aktionsart), this study makes no such differentiation and understands these as merely different formal realisations of one and the same content category: aspectuality.

En él, efectivamente, después de señalar los distintos significados de tiempo como término lingüístico, se aborda el estudio de todas y cada una de las formas temporales, tanto desde el punto de vista más abstracto o del sistema, como, sobre todo, en la perspectiva de los diferentes usos o variantes concretas de que son susceptibles en el discurso o cadena hablada. Se le concede, por ejemplo, relativa amplitud al problema de la distinción entre el imperfecto de indicativo cantaba y el indefinidocanté, uno de los puntos quizás más obscuros y difíciles para un extranjero no perteneciente a la órbita románica. Aunque no se estudian exactamente los modos -que serán materia de un nuevo volumen en preparación-, se tienen en cuenta, sin embargo, en cuanto contenidos implicados o relacionados con el tiempo, pues no es infrecuente que, por ejemplo, una oposición temporal se convierta en modal en determinadas circunstancias contextuales, o que modo y tiempo se presupongan mutuamente en ciertas ocasiones. Por lo que se refiere a las formas no personales, se hace también especial hincapié en los distintos usos, especialmente a propósito del gerundio, cuya utilización presenta problemas incluso a los hablantes nativos.
