Book excerpt: El presente libro propone destacar dos personajes que ejercieron las artes médicas en Cartagena de Indias en la primera mitad del siglo XVII: Diego López, un mulato cirujano nacido en Cartagena y Paula de Eguiluz, una curandera de ancestro afro. A pesar de su calidad subalterna fueron reconocidos como sanadores expertos en la sociedad de su tiempo. Es preciso resaltar que el oficio de médicos, cirujanos, boticarios, barberos y curanderas era considerado arte manual y artesanal. Los médicos tenían mayor reconocimiento porque habían adquirido su saber en universidades españolas o europeas. Cartagena en el siglo XVII era el puerto de mayor importancia en el continente suramericano. Allí llegaban los galeones de la armada española y era el único puerto autorizado para el desembarque de esclavizados procedentes del continente negro. Era entonces una ciudad que requería servicios médicos. Al llegar y asentarse gente de diversos lugares conformó, junto con naturales de la región y de África una ciudad de castas que aprovechó las oportunidades que ofrecían los oficios artesanales para mejorar sus condiciones de vida. Se entrenaban como zapateros, sastres, modistas, carpinteros, constructores de casas y navíos, calafateadores y otros más. En ella se instaló el tribunal de la Inquisición para velar por la pureza de la fe católica, sus desviaciones y a raíz de la cantidad de extranjeros que allí se asentaron. Los documentos utilizados para la escritura del texto proceden del Archivo Histórico Nacional de Madrid, el Archivo General de la Nación de Bogotá y el Archivum Romanum Sociedatis Iesú (ARSI) de Roma.
