Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From master storyteller Carlos Ruiz Zafon, author of the international phenomenon The Shadow of the Wind, comes The Angel’s Game — a dazzling new page-turner about the perilous nature of obsession, in literature and in love. The whole of Barcelona stretched out at my feet and I wanted to believe that when I opened those windows — my new windows — each evening its streets would whisper stories to me, secrets in my ear, that I could catch on paper and narrate to whomever cared to listen… In an abandoned mansion at the heart of Barcelona, a young man, David Martin, makes his living by writing sensationalist novels under a pseudonym. The survivor of a troubled childhood, he has taken refuge in the world of books and spends his nights spinning baroque tales about the city’s underworld. But perhaps his dark imaginings are not as strange as they seem, for in a locked room deep within the house lie photographs and letters hinting at the mysterious death of the previous owner. Like a slow poison, the history of the place seeps into his bones as he struggles with an impossible love. Close to despair, David receives a letter from a reclusive French editor, Andreas Corelli, who makes him the offer of a lifetime. He is to write a book unlike anything that has ever existed — a book with the power to change hearts and minds. In return, he will receive a fortune, and perhaps more. But as David begins the work, he realizes that there is a connection between his haunting book and the shadows that surround his home. Once again, Zafon takes us into a dark, gothic universe first seen in The Shadow of the Wind and creates a breathtaking adventure of intrigue, romance, and tragedy. Through a dizzyingly constructed labyrinth of secrets, the magic of books, passion, and friendship blend into a masterful story.

Book El Angel s Last Conquest

Download or read book El Angel s Last Conquest written by Elvira Orphée and published by Ballantine Books. This book was released on 1985 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A novel from Argentina (where publication was halted for many years) about the life and career of a torturer The torturer has no name, but we come to know him well as he plies his craft from episode to episode. He serves his apprenticeship with the devotion of the professional. Victim after victim is strapped down before him as he perfects his vocation. They fade away as he moves upward in the hierarchy of his bizarre career. So many questions lie behind, as posed by Elvira Orphée: "How can torturers have a family? Is it possible that they love their own children and intensely hate the children of others? Do they feel the suffering they induce and watch? Is it possible for them to imagine themselves in the place of their victims?" Elvira Orphée seems concerned with commentary about her native Argentina, but she is most interested in the universal notion of torture. This novel, her fifth and initially published in Spanish in her sister country of Venezuela, is a special contribution to our understanding of a sorrowful human condition. It finally appeared in Argentina in November 1984, seven years after its first publication.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Eye of the Storm," the tenth book in the Brothers Series and sixth in the Shamrocks Saga, continues the story begun in Shamrocks in the Heather with the on-going adventures of the younger members of the Quigley clan. World War II is over and the Quigley cousins (by whatever name they're known) are learning to live in the new, emerging world. 'The Kennison-Quigley family, now living on Long Island, is still coping with mobs attempting a takeover of Shamrocks Ltd. USA property resulting in violence and death. Will the Angels take a hand? A pleasant surprise awaits the twin couples when they discover old and new relatives in an unexpected place. This discovery will cause widespread ramifications. There's also a new wrinkle in the battle with the netherworld as the pregnant members of the family find themselves targets of demons hoping to engratiate themselves to their boss by kidnapping a Quigley child. Each of the women is tested in a different way with sometimes unexpected results. As usual, births, deaths and completely unbelievable events test the family's resolve and courage again and again. Birth is something the Archangel Za'aphi'el never imagined having to cope with. To his secret chagrin, the twins find themselves looking forward to motherhood and all that entails. What kind of mothers will the alter-egos of a high-ranking Archangel make? Their mysterious friend Andr Giroux returns and plays an important part in their ongoing story. Speculation about him continues but those in the know refuse to divulge his secret. Who is he and what effect will he have on the family? Another surprising development is the growing friendship between the twins and their supposed enemy, Beelzebub. The little demon has grown quite attached to the whole family, not to mention his growing bond with the indominable Glory. How will this change affect the outcome of the battle with Lucifer? Even Bub doesn't know. This is not a religious book nor meant to endorse or promote any type of belief. It is intended to provide a verbal roller-coaster ride. Plus, I've grown to quite like 'The Old Man. Enjoy

Book Cecilia Vald s or El Angel Hill

Download or read book Cecilia Vald s or El Angel Hill written by Cirilo Villaverde and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2005-09-29 with total page 545 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cecilia Valdés is arguably the most important novel of 19th century Cuba. Originally published in New York City in 1882, Cirilo Villaverde's novel has fascinated readers inside and outside Cuba since the late 19th century. In this new English translation, a vast landscape emerges of the moral, political, and sexual depravity caused by slavery and colonialism. Set in the Havana of the 1830s, the novel introduces us to Cecilia, a beautiful light-skinned mulatta, who is being pursued by the son of a Spanish slave trader, named Leonardo. Unbeknownst to the two, they are the children of the same father. Eventually Cecilia gives in to Leonardo's advances; she becomes pregnant and gives birth to a baby girl. When Leonardo, who gets bored with Cecilia after a while, agrees to marry a white upper class woman, Cecilia vows revenge. A mulatto friend and suitor of hers kills Leonardo, and Cecilia is thrown into prison as an accessory to the crime. For the contemporary reader Helen Lane's masterful translation of Cecilia Valdés opens a new window into the intricate problems of race relations in Cuba and the Caribbean. There are the elite social circles of European and New World Whites, the rich culture of the free people of color, the class to which Cecilia herself belonged, and then the slaves, divided among themselves between those who were born in Africa and those who were born in the New World, and those who worked on the sugar plantation and those who worked in the households of the rich people in Havana. Cecilia Valdés thus presents a vast portrait of sexual, social, and racial oppression, and the lived experience of Spanish colonialism in Cuba.

Book The Native Americans of the Texas Edwards Plateau 1582 1799

Download or read book The Native Americans of the Texas Edwards Plateau 1582 1799 written by Maria F. Wade and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2010-01-01 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 2003 – Texas Old Missions and Forts Restoration Association Book Award Winner – Texas Catholic Historical Society 2004 – Finalist: Friends of the Dallas Public Library Award for Book Making the Most Significant Contribution to Knowledge – Texas Institute of Letters The region that now encompasses Central Texas and northern Coahuila, Mexico, was once inhabited by numerous Native hunter-gather groups whose identities and lifeways we are only now learning through archaeological discoveries and painstaking research into Spanish and French colonial records. From these key sources, Maria F. Wade has compiled this first comprehensive ethnohistory of the Native groups that inhabited the Texas Edwards Plateau and surrounding areas during most of the Spanish colonial era. Much of the book deals with events that took place late in the seventeenth century, when Native groups and Europeans began to have their first sustained contact in the region. Wade identifies twenty-one Native groups, including the Jumano, who inhabited the Edwards Plateau at that time. She offers evidence that the groups had sophisticated social and cultural mechanisms, including extensive information networks, ladino cultural brokers, broad-based coalitions, and individuals with dual-ethnic status. She also tracks the eastern movement of Spanish colonizers into the Edwards Plateau region, explores the relationships among Native groups and between those groups and European colonizers, and develops a timeline that places isolated events and singular individuals within broad historical processes.
