Book War Refugees and the Labour Market

Download or read book War Refugees and the Labour Market written by Ewa Łaźniewska and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-08-12 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses the complex socioeconomic situation in the Polish-Ukrainian borderland, in the context of the labour market, following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. It analyses and assesses the measures which influence the process of Ukrainian war refugees’ adaptation to the Polish labour market, surveying the engagement of local actors, such as employers, labour market institutions and nongovernmental organisations. It examines the impact of the refugee crisis on this market, as well as mobilisation of various groups of actors in order to support this specific group of migrants in adapting to life in Poland. The authors argue that this phenomenon of the migration of war refugees confirms the thesis that political instability can be a factor in pushing people abroad as equally important as inequalities in prosperity. The book identifies the characteristic features of the stream of war refugees from Ukraine as a category of cross-border flows. Before the Russian attack, the influx of Ukrainians to Poland was due mainly to economic pressures, whereas, after the outbreak of war, Ukrainians’ motivation to cross the border with Poland as well as the structure of this migration stream have radically changed. The book offers in-depth insight into the development of borderland regions, and especially the cross-border labour market as a specific element of the borderland economic ecosystem. It highlights the positive outcomes of the migration crisis, which will serve as examples of best practice for other regions in Europe. This book will be of interest to scholars, researchers and policymakers concerned with regional development, including contact regions, as well as cross-border flows, the labour market and migration.

It includes a detailed description of the flows, the different channels of immigration and the diversity of nationalities involved. The report also underscores the contribution of immigration to population and labor force growth and reports on the changes in the sectoral distribution of foreign workers. In addition, it reviews selection policies in relation to labor migration, especially those regarding skilled foreign workers, and examines limits to these policies. The report also presents measures aimed at improving the management of migration flows, recalling that cooperation with origin countries remains a priority for migration policies. Particular attention is given to the integration of immigrants, with a focus on policies that improve the knowledge of the host country's language, the recognition of migrants' diplomas and qualifications and access to vocational training for low-skilled migrants. The report also includes details about the ongoing process in developing common migration policies within Europe.

Book The Silver Market Phenomenon

Download or read book The Silver Market Phenomenon written by Florian Kohlbacher and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008 with total page 514 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The current shift in demographics - aging and shrinking populations - in many countries around the world presents a major challenge to companies and societies alike. One particularly essential implication is the emergence and constant growth of the so-called "silver market," the market segment more or less broadly defined as those people aged 55 and older. Increasing in number and share of the total population while at the same time being relatively well-off, this market segment can be seen as very attractive and promising, although still very underdeveloped in terms of product and service offerings. This book offers a thorough and up-to-date analysis of the challenges and opportunities in leveraging innovation, technology, product development and marketing for elder consumers and employees. Key lessons are drawn from the Japanese lead market as well as other select countries.

Book Coming Home to an Un familiar Country

Download or read book Coming Home to an Un familiar Country written by Mariusz Dzięglewski and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-01-30 with total page 391 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume focuses on the process of return migration, from a holistic and policy-oriented perspective. Studies in return migration, which remains a vibrant field for academics, researchers, and policy-makers, have provided a large body of knowledge on particular issues, but generally fall along two lines: they are either broad macro analyses and models (especially economic ones) or narrow ethnographic views (anthropological, sociological, or psychological). This volume attempts to chart a course between these two approaches, combining returning migrants’ life trajectories, as seen by themselves, with analysis of the structural processes that have taken place in the last three decades in Europe and in Poland, as a new EU country. In analyzing the social and cultural changes reflected in the biographies of returning migrants, the author uses a framework based on an original synthesis of Alfred Schütz’s phenomenological approach, focusing on the returnees’ “life words,” with the social realism of Margaret Archer, focusing on the concerns and projects of individuals interacting with social and cultural structures.

Book Economics Without Laws

Download or read book Economics Without Laws written by Łukasz Hardt and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-09-22 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a vision of economics in which there is no place for universal laws of nature, and even for laws of a more probabilistic character. The author avoids interpreting the practice of economics as something that leads to the formulation of universal laws or laws of nature. Instead, chapters in the book follow the method of contemporary philosophy of science: rather than formulating suggestions for practicing scientists of how they should do research, the text describes and interprets the very practice of scientific research. This approach demonstrates how economists can explain economic phenomena not by subsuming them under general laws, but rather by building models of these phenomena, by referring to causes, or even by investigating what is in the nature of given factors, events, or circumstances to produce.
