Book excerpt: To initiate its new Ph.D. Program in Transcultural German Studies, jointly offered by the University of Arizona and the University of Leipzig, the Department of German Studies at the University of Arizona organized an international conference on Transcultural German Studies in Tucson from March 29-31, 2007. Conference participants sought to define the nature of Transcultural German Studies. This new, interdisciplinary field of inquiry investigates the cultural landscapes of the German-speaking world in the light of globalization and inter- and transcultural contact. The contributions that comprise the volume are by scholars who work in a number of related fields, exploring transcultural phenomena - past and present - evident in selected literary, filmic, musical and historical texts. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contrastive lexical semantics was the main topic of an International Workshop at the University of Münster in May, 1997. It was addressed from different perspectives, from the pragmatic perspective of a corpus-oriented approach as well as from the model-oriented perspective of sign theoretic linguistics. Whereas the rule-governed model-oriented approach is necessarily restricted to subsets of vocabulary, the pragmatic approach aims to analyse and describe the whole vocabulary-in-use. After the pragmatic turn, lexical semantics can no longer be seen as a discipline on its own but has to be developed as an integral part of a theory of language use. Essential features of individual languages can be discovered only by looking beyond the limits of our mother languages and including a contrastive perspective. Within a pragmatic, corpus-oriented approach essential new ideas are discussed, mainly the insight that single words can no longer be considered to be the lexical unit. It is the complex multi-word lexical unit a pragmatic approach has to deal with.

On the one hand, the volume delivers a practice relevant theoretical framework which will enable linguists and internationally operating businesses to evaluate product and service comments of foreign customers written in their mother tongue and intended for their fellow nationals. The theoretical framework should be applicable to any language combination. On the other hand, a large-scale empiric study has been carried out building on our theoretical premises with the aim of determining the text linguistic structure and language use in Spanish, Dutch, French and German customer comments on hotel accommodation in two relevant applications of the Social Web (social network services like Facebook and comments on the webs of hotel reservations agencies). Our findings will enable Spanish and German companies to interpret the linguistic behavior of their German/Spanish clients sharing their accommodation experiences on the Social Web.

This volume looks at this matter from a grammar competition perspective. An experiment conducted in Bandar Lampung with Indonesian learners of English identified specific error patterns. These patterns result from grammar competition between the L1 Indonesian and the L2 English. This work mainly deals with the influence of adverbs such as still or already, and the category of the non-verbal predicate (adjectival, nominal, preposition phrase). Although the main focus of this work is in the field of language acquisition, this volume also provides a detailed contrast between English and Indonesian non-verbal predicates and the contrast of the English copula be and the Indonesian copulas ada and adalah. The lingusitic description is done in a generative DM-based approach. Thus, this volume does not only provide new insights in the field language acquisiton, but also in the generative description of Indonesian in general and non-verbal predicates in particular.

Book excerpt: This book, the English version of La traduction aujourd'hui (Hachette 1994), describes the interpretive theory of translation developed at the Paris Ecole Supérieure d'Interprètes et de Traducteurs (ESIT) over the last 35 years. The theory identifies the mental and cognitive processes involved in both oral and written translation: understanding the text, deverbalizing its language, re-expressing sense. For the purposes of translation, languages are a means of transmitting sense, they are not to be translated as such. Although translation involves the use of correspondences, translators generally set up equivalence between text segments. The synecdochic nature of both languages and texts, a phenomenon discussed in the book, explains why translation is possible across language differences. The many practical problems faced by translators, the difference between translation exercises used as a language teaching tool and professional translation, translating into a foreign language, and machine translation as compared to human translation are also discussed.
