Download or read book Philosophie aus interkultureller Sicht written by Notker Schneider and published by Rodopi. This book was released on 1997 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A foundational text in empiricism and skepticism, An Enquiry Concerning Human Understanding comprehensively examines the nature of human cognition, the limits of human knowledge, and the role of reason in understanding the world. Hume argues that our understanding of the world is based on custom, habit, and experience, rather than pure reason or innate knowledge. He challenges the notions of causality, induction, and the concepts of connections between cause and effect, arguing that our understanding of these relationships is based on probability and custom. It lays the groundwork for modern philosophy, emphasizing the importance of empirical evidence and the role of human psychology in shaping our beliefs and understanding of reality. Book An Enquiry Concerning Human Understanding

Download or read book An Enquiry Concerning Human Understanding written by David Hume and published by . This book was released on 2021-05-31 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published in 1748, An Enquiry Concerning Human Understanding is Scottish empiricist philosopher David Hume's distillation of his mature philosophy. Addressing themes including the limits of human understanding, the compatibility of free will with determinism, weaknesses in the foundations of religion, and the appeal of skepticism, An Enquiry Concerning Human Understanding is Hume's attempt to revise and clarify the ideas of his earlier A Treatise of Human Nature. A major work in the empiricist school of thought that included John Locke and George Berkeley, Hume's work influenced such later authors as Adam Smith, Immanuel Kant, and Jeremy Bentham. Controversial and widely debated since its publication, An Enquiry Concerning Human Understanding is a classic of empiricist philosophy whose questions remain as relevant today as ever.

Book The Survival of Mankind

Download or read book The Survival of Mankind written by Robert Maschmann and published by tredition. This book was released on 2023-11-20 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although humans are by no means a threatened species on this planet, humans are obviously concerned and fearful that mankind will not survive and that the animal species Homo sapiens will be annihilated forever. This seems to be a contradiction. In this book, the author shows that this apparent contradiction is not one. The author shows that the fear of humans that mankind could be annihilated in whatever way is undoubtedly justified and that this fear is not just the unfounded imagination of a species that is apparently more or less so overwhelmed with its own existence that it constantly fantasises about its own demise. However, if this fear of humans that mankind could be wiped out by whatever events is actually justified, then a question immediately arises, the answer to which is, so to speak, the purpose of this book: What would be the conditions that would have to be fulfilled so that under all possible circumstances and for every conceivable case this annihilation of all mankind could be prevented or avoided and there would therefore be no end of mankind? In accordance with the subtitle of this book, the author will therefore make speculations about the conditions under which the continued existence of the animal species Homo sapiens and thus also of Mankind could be guaranteed under all possible circumstances and for every conceivable case.

Book Scottish Common Sense in Germany 1768 1800

Download or read book Scottish Common Sense in Germany 1768 1800 written by Manfred Kuehn and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 1987 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: He finds that the work of these philosophers was widely discussed in German philosophical journals and translated into German soon after its publication in Britain. Important German philosophers such as Mendelssohn, Lossius, Feder, Hamann, and Jacobi, representing the full range of philosophical positions, read the Scots and found valuable philosophical insights in their thought. Kuehn suggests that the most important aspect of their reading was the perception of Scottish common-sense philosophers as opposing Hume's scepticism while complementing his positive teaching. Their views gave considerable impetus to those developments in German thought that ultimately led to Kant's critical philosophy. In fact Kant, whose devastating criticism of the Scottish common-sense philosophers is often cited, learned much from the Scots, as his Critique of Pure Reason reveals. Kuehn's analysis of the Scottish influence provides a new perspective on the German enlightenment and Kant's role within it, revealing the importance of problems of idealism versus realism and of philosophical justification versus mere descriptive metaphysics.

Book The Reception of David Hume In Europe

Download or read book The Reception of David Hume In Europe written by Peter Jones and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2005-01-01 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The intellectual scope and cultural impact of British writers cannot be assessed without reference to their European 'fortunes'. These essays, prepared by an international team of scholars, critics and translators, record the ways in which David Hume has been translated, evaluated and emulated in different national and linguistic areas of Europe. This is the first collection of essays to consider how and where Hume's works were initially understood throughout Europe. They reflect on how early European responses to Hume relied on available French translations, and concentrated on his Political Discourses and his History, and how later German translations enabled professional philosophers to discuss his more abstract ideas. Also explored is the idea that continental readers were not able to judge the accuracy of the translations they read, nor did many consider the contexts in which Hume was writing: rather, they were intent on using what they read for their own purposes.
