Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Now hard to believe, Eilean Donan Castle was once one of the largest castles in the west Highlands, known to have featured seven towers, the remains of which lie buried on the island. This book provides a refreshed view of the lost medieval guise of the castle, of its 13th-century origins and form, and of who was responsible for building it, allowing the castle to be positioned accurately in the complex dynamics of powerholding and display of the earls of Ross and associated militarized kindreds of the west Highlands during six centuries of change up to the castle’s destruction in 1719. A new history and the details of the below-ground archaeology allow us to see the lost medieval castle in our mind’s eye 500 years after it vanished. Focusing on the huge amount of archaeological material unearthed during the campaign shows the castle hosted master craftspeople including goldsmiths, shipwrights and hereditary swordsmiths. Exquisite personal items, decorative mail armor and weapons, musical instruments, gaming pieces, imported pottery and animal bones bring the castle and its inhabitants back to life.

Book British and Irish Butterflies

Download or read book British and Irish Butterflies written by Roger L H Dennis and published by CABI. This book was released on 2018-07-13 with total page 407 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Islands are special places; they can be havens for unique plants and animals and refuges for wildlife. This book investigates the biogeography of butterfly species over the British islands, particularly the factors that influence their presence on the islands and that have made each island's butterfly fauna distinctive. The book contains a full log of records of species on the islands and much supporting information. The first three chapters set the scene, illustrating the basics of island biogeography theory, their changing circumstances during the current Holocene interglacial, and studies of natural history of British butterflies that mark the islands as the most intensively studied region for wildlife in the world. The book advances by increasing resolution downscale from a European continental perspective, through patterns and changes on the British mainland, a comparison of the two dominant islands of Britain and Ireland, to a close inspection of the dynamics of species on the multitude of offshore islands. Detailed investigations include contrasts in species' richness on the islands and then of the incidences of each species. Case studies highlight the continual turnover of species on islands. Attention is then given to evolutionary changes since the time that glaciers enveloped Europe. A powerful message is conveyed for the maintenance of butterfly species on the smaller British islands now experiencing population losses at a rate unprecedented since the spread of the last ice sheets: the incontrovertible importance of maintaining populations of species on nearby mainland sources for islands as pools for future migrants.

The main contemporary terms and idiomatic phraseology, often not available in other dictionaries, provide excellent models for easier language learning. There are also twelve useful appendices which cover not only the various parts of speech, lenition and proper nouns, but also address the more difficult issues of expressing time, direction and numerals. Book Scottish Sea Kayak Trail

Download or read book Scottish Sea Kayak Trail written by Simon Willis and published by Pesda Press. This book was released on 2009 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scotland's west coast is an undisputed world-class sea kayaking destination. This book challenges the reader to kayak a 500km route, from the Isle of Gigha off the Kintyre peninsula, to the Summer Isles near Ullapool. It can be undertaken in four holiday-sized sections or as one long, glorious journey. The emphasis is on practical advice; how to tackle tricky tidal passages; places to visit; where to source essential information; food re- supply; where to safely leave kayaks overnight; how and when to shuttle vehicles; and the accessibility of public transport. Although camping is an essential element of this journey the book does not identify wild camp sites or even picnic places. It gives sea kayakers enough information to seek out their own adventures and so spread the environmental impact. The history of this country is inextricably linked to the west coast, from the Scoti to the Norsemen, the Lords of the Isles to the Clearances. An historical thread, woven through the text, tells 'Scotland's Story'. There are useful photographs and notes to help identify wildlife without disturbance, plus practical recommendations on wild camping, from minimum impact techniques to Scottish access law. For those who travel the trail in the comfort of their armchairs, there's also the story of the author's own journey. Together you will travel under big skies on imposing seas in the company of seals, dolphins, eagles and gulls. The Scottish Sea Kayak Trail is waiting for you.
