Book Eighth Grade Transition to High School

Download or read book Eighth Grade Transition to High School written by Kristen Campbell-Wilder and published by ProQuest. This book was released on 2009 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examined the perceptions of eighth grade students and eighth and ninth grade teachers regarding academic, procedural, and social transition issues from middle school to high school. The research design was a multi-site, mixed methods case study of two suburban districts with single 6-8th grade middle schools feeding a single high school. Academic issues explored student concern about harder classes, homework, grades, more teachers, preparation for college, and preparation for life. Procedural issues included concerns about the size of the school, getting lost, getting to class on time, school rules, and expectations. Social issues covered included safety, sense of belonging, fitting in, bullying and freedom. The conceptual framework for this study was based on a study of elementary to middle school transition by Akos and Galassi (2004) which grouped transition issues into three components: academic, procedural and social. This study examined how these same issues are related to the transition at a secondary school level.

Book Making the Move

Download or read book Making the Move written by Osiris Morales and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The transition from middle school to high school presents many students with challenges that affect their academic performance and overall success in their first year of high school, due to their lack of success; many students become disengaged and eventually drop out of high school before tenth grade. This study researched the major challenges ninth grade students encountered in their transition from middle school to high school, and how those challenges affected their academic performance. The study also investigated how eighth grade teachers prepared students to transition to high school and the kind of support students received in high school from their ninth grade teachers to help them adjust easily to the new environment. This study included three groups of participants: ninth grade students, eighth grade teachers, and ninth grade teachers, all participants responded to a survey created specifically for their group.

Book Effects of Summer School Transition Program and Grade Level on Seventh Eighth and Ninth Grade Students Grades Attendance and Behavior

Download or read book Effects of Summer School Transition Program and Grade Level on Seventh Eighth and Ninth Grade Students Grades Attendance and Behavior written by Katie Smith and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This causal-comparative study sought to identify the effects of attending a summer school transition program and students' grade levels (seventh v. eighth v. ninth) on students' grades (based on course failures), attendance (based on students' absences), and behavior (based on number of behavioral office referrals). The students who participated in this study were identified as at-risk during one of three educational transitions: from elementary school to middle school, between seventh and eighth grade in the middle school, and from middle school to high school. As part of their elementary school to middle school, intra-middle school, or middle school to high school transition program, students in the treatment group participated in a three-week summer program with academic classes in math, reading, and science, which their upcoming grade-level teacher taught. The goals of the summer transition program include familiarizing students with new academic structures and teacher expectations as well as previewing curriculum material for the upcoming school year. In order to compare the groups' data, the researcher used the chi-square analysis. While there was no change in students' grades or behavior related to participation in the summer transition program, statistically significant relationships did exist between grade level and attendance for eight and ninth grade students, as well as students who did not attend the summer school transition program. Grade level did not have a significant impact on the change in students' grades or behavior from one year to the next.

Book An Eighth ninth Grade Transition Meeting Toolkit for Middle School Individualized Education Plans

Download or read book An Eighth ninth Grade Transition Meeting Toolkit for Middle School Individualized Education Plans written by Irene Amezcua and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research focused on the tools and questions (detailed thoroughly in a toolkit via PowerPoint) that can be helpful for middle school individualized education plans (IEPs) when discussing high school placement (i.e., specialized academic instruction with students with mild/mod disabilities, special day class for students with mod/severe disabilities, functional academics course and like skills coursework). Graduation requirements and the types of high school general and special education classroom settings were thoroughly discussed throughout the literature review and in multiple chapters within this toolkit. Components stated in the Educational Specialist's toolkit to eight to nineth grade IEP transition meetings include the data or documentation that factored into recommendation for high school placement, how parents/families were involved in the process, case managing and prepping for an eight grade transition meeting, administrator support throughout the transition process, and baseline/questions asked by high school Educational Specialists at an eighth grade transition meeting. This toolkit also included guidance that the current middle school IEP team and perspective high school Educational Specialists can use throughout the entire eighth grade year of students with disabilities and create a transition plan when discussing least restrictive environment for the students in high school.

Book An Analysis of Students in Transition from Middle to High School

Download or read book An Analysis of Students in Transition from Middle to High School written by Christine Kisner and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The researcher's purpose was to illustrate and compare attitudes early in the school year after the student's transition from middle school to high school. Specifically, the researcher addressed the following questions: 1) To what extent are attitudes of ninth grade students who participated in transition activities similar to those of ninth grade students who did not participate in transition activities? 2) To what extent are attitudes of parents of ninth grade students who participated in transition activities similar to those of ninth grade students who participated in transition activities? Various events were planned throughout the eighth grade year to prepare the students for high school. A Parent Night at the middle school, a Curriculum Fair, a Freshman Showcase, and a Freshman Orientation are described. In addition, a Freshman Seminar class designed for at-risk students is outlined. The researcher examined data from a survey given to students and their parents after the transition to high school. A similar survey was administered to students who did not experience any transition activities prior to ninth grade. After assessment of the student responses, the researcher concluded that while transition activities are beneficial for the majority of students, there was no statistical significance in attitudes and perception between the Treatment Group and the Control Group.
