Of Montana during the'past two years have demonstrated the necessity of reclaiming land by irrigation for the purpose of furnishing winter feed for the livestock raised there and it is apparent that an immediate demand for the land would be created by the completion of the Project. Non irrigated crops in that section of the State have suffered from lack of moisture during both years and have been just short of a com plete failure. Download or read book Final Report 1917 Vol 2 written by and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-13 with total page 774 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Final Report, 1917, Vol. 2: Description of Surveying Marks and Monuments Used Nearly all the marks and monuments herein described have been set by the engineers of the United States Geological Survey, and the officials of that organization have rendered every assistance in publishing the volume, includ ing reading the proof, and engraving and printing the three maps it contains. Also the officers of the Corps of Engineers, United States Army; of the United States Coast and Geodetic Survey; and of cities and railroads within the State, have supplied all available data in their possession, that was perti nent. The U. 5. Coast and Geodetic Survey has kindly furnished the electro plates for the table inserted in pocket on the back cover of this volume. The State employees who have assisted in the work are Mr. Gabriel Weber, who, assisted by Mr. G. J. Militante, prepared Maps 1 and 2 in pocket for en graving; Prof. W. D. Tumbull, who lent assistance at various stages of the work; and Miss Hazel Harris, who assisted in the preparation of the material for publication, and assisted Mr. Weber in proof-reading the entire work. I desire here to acknowledge the faithful and efficient service of all. Altho this volume includes all the information relative to the surveying marks and monuments used in completing the field work, two more volumes will be needed to present the remaining material made available by the survey. Provision was made for these two volumes in the Sundry Appropriation bill by the General Assembly finance committees, but unfortunately on the last day of the session, last Tuesday, the entire bill was defeated. It is to be hoped that the Emergency Board will make provision for the publication of the two remaining volumes while the material may yet be most easily prepared and presented. Book Details:
  • Author : Leslie J. Reagan
  • Publisher : Univ of California Press
  • Release : 2022-02-22
  • ISBN : 0520387422
  • Pages : 433 pages

Download or read book When Abortion Was a Crime written by Leslie J. Reagan and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2022-02-22 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The definitive history of abortion in the United States, with a new preface that equips readers for what’s to come. When Abortion Was a Crime is the must-read book on abortion history. Originally published ahead of the thirtieth anniversary of Roe v. Wade, this award-winning study was the first to examine the entire period during which abortion was illegal in the United States, beginning in the mid-nineteenth century and ending with that monumental case in 1973. When Abortion Was a Crime is filled with intimate stories and nuanced analysis, demonstrating how abortion was criminalized and policed—and how millions of women sought abortions regardless of the law. With this edition, Leslie J. Reagan provides a new preface that addresses the dangerous and ongoing threats to abortion access across the country, and the precarity of our current moment. While abortions have typically been portrayed as grim "back alley" operations, this deeply researched history confirms that many abortion providers—including physicians—practiced openly and safely, despite prohibitions by the state and the American Medical Association. Women could find cooperative and reliable practitioners; but prosecution, public humiliation, loss of privacy, and inferior medical care were a constant threat. Reagan's analysis of previously untapped sources, including inquest records and trial transcripts, shows the fragility of patient rights and raises provocative questions about the relationship between medicine and law. With the right to abortion increasingly under attack, this book remains the definitive history of abortion in the United States, offering vital lessons for every American concerned with health care, civil liberties, and personal and sexual freedom.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "I too am not a bit tamed—I too am untranslatable / I sound my barbaric yawp over the roofs of the world."—Walt Whitman, "Song of Myself," Leaves of Grass The American Yawp is a free, online, collaboratively built American history textbook. Over 300 historians joined together to create the book they wanted for their own students—an accessible, synthetic narrative that reflects the best of recent historical scholarship and provides a jumping-off point for discussions in the U.S. history classroom and beyond. Long before Whitman and long after, Americans have sung something collectively amid the deafening roar of their many individual voices. The Yawp highlights the dynamism and conflict inherent in the history of the United States, while also looking for the common threads that help us make sense of the past. Without losing sight of politics and power, The American Yawp incorporates transnational perspectives, integrates diverse voices, recovers narratives of resistance, and explores the complex process of cultural creation. It looks for America in crowded slave cabins, bustling markets, congested tenements, and marbled halls. It navigates between maternity wards, prisons, streets, bars, and boardrooms. The fully peer-reviewed edition of The American Yawp will be available in two print volumes designed for the U.S. history survey. Volume I begins with the indigenous people who called the Americas home before chronicling the collision of Native Americans, Europeans, and Africans. The American Yawp traces the development of colonial society in the context of the larger Atlantic World and investigates the origins and ruptures of slavery, the American Revolution, and the new nation's development and rebirth through the Civil War and Reconstruction. Rather than asserting a fixed narrative of American progress, The American Yawp gives students a starting point for asking their own questions about how the past informs the problems and opportunities that we confront today.

Book excerpt: Learning to Think Spatially examines how spatial thinking might be incorporated into existing standards-based instruction across the school curriculum. Spatial thinking must be recognized as a fundamental part of Kâ€"12 education and as an integrator and a facilitator for problem solving across the curriculum. With advances in computing technologies and the increasing availability of geospatial data, spatial thinking will play a significant role in the information-based economy of the twenty-first century. Using appropriately designed support systems tailored to the Kâ€"12 context, spatial thinking can be taught formally to all students. A geographic information system (GIS) offers one example of a high-technology support system that can enable students and teachers to practice and apply spatial thinking in many areas of the curriculum.
