Book English Letters and Letter Writers of the Eighteenth Century

Download or read book English Letters and Letter Writers of the Eighteenth Century written by Howard Williams and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-26 with total page 622 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from English Letters and Letter-Writers of the Eighteenth Century: With Explanatory Notes For the most part, the Literature of Letter-Writing, properly so-called, falls within quite modern times. From Antiquity have come down to us several Collections of Letters; but, with two or three notable exceptions, such only in name, they are chiefly moral or political essays, descriptive pieces, and rhetorical declamations. In Greek Literature, one of the earliest of them bears the magic name of Plato. Modem criticism, generally, holds them to be forgeries; and their intrinsic merit or interest is not so high as to make their genuineness or spuriousness matter of very great concern. Equally spurious, but more entertaining, are the Letters of the Scythian or Tartar prince, Anacharsis, the enterprising traveller of the Sixth Century, B.C. Next, in order of time, come the so-called Letters of Alkiphron (of the Second or Third Century of the Christian era), the most entertaining and valuable of the species. As pictures of Athenian life and manners, of the New Comedy period, high interest attaches to them; and for elegance of style, and picturesqueness of description, they have a deserved repute. Not much later, probably, were composed the Love-Letters of Aristaenetus. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Letters of the Republic

Download or read book The Letters of the Republic written by Michael Warner and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2009-06-01 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The subject of Michael Warner's book is the rise of a nation. America, he shows, became a nation by developing a new kind of reading public, where one becomes a citizen by taking one's place as writer or reader. At heart, the United States is a republic of letters, and its birth can be dated from changes in the culture of printing in the early eighteenth century. The new and widespread use of print media transformed the relations between people and power in a way that set in motion the republican structure of government we have inherited. Examining books, pamphlets, and circulars, he merges theory and concrete analysis to provide a multilayered view of American cultural development.

Book Eighteenth Century Letters

Download or read book Eighteenth Century Letters written by R. Brimley Johnson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-24 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Eighteenth Century Letters The voluminous and interesting correspondence of the Eighteenth Century - when letter-writing was indeed an art - can only be read at present in more or less elaborate and expensive complete editions, or in small anthologies containing at most half-a-dozen letters by the same writer. The aim of the present series is to present a selection of this inexhaustible material in groups, each sufficiently large to create an atmosphere. No attempt has been made to seek out one-letter men, or to unearth a neglected genius; but the leaders of thought arid action - in so far as they wrote good letters - are represented by their most characteristic work, collected from all authentic sources. The choice of particular letters has been governed by literary rather than historical or even biographical considerations; and each volume should be readable and complete in itself; illustrative at once of style and manners. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Intimate Society Letters of the Eighteenth Century, Vol. 1 of 2 OF all the centuries that lie Beneath us in the dust of Time, I like the eighteenth, and I try To paint in thought its fame, and crime. A wondrous rich mosaic seems Revealed in its last layer of earth: Then rare Invention bade the dreams Of bygone ages move to birth; And What had Fancies been, became The living children of a day, Bright with all Love's ethereal flame, Or black with terror and dismay. Then rose at last the mental might Of Man to dominate the power That Nature gives in Light and Heat, Volcano's blaze, or vernal shower. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Political and Social Letters of a Lady of the Eighteenth Century: 1721-1771 Also, Mrs. Osborn's relationship to the unfortunate Admiral Byng necessarily involves the introduction of that sad event in her life; and though his story is a familiar one to all readers of history, it never grows stale by repetition, and an additional interest will be given to the subject by the insertion of some letters connected with it, which have never before been published. Mrs. Osborn, who was by marriage a great-niece of the now well-known Dorothy Osborne, was a woman of unusual capacity and energy, and the exceptional circumstances of her life were calculated to develop her powers to the uttermost. Book The Story of American Letters Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Story of American Letters Classic Reprint written by Walter Fuller Taylor and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-10-13 with total page 514 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of American Letters The story that lies between those two points is, to my thinking, the story Of our literature itself. It is not a story Of lives, or Of literary milieux, though biographical or social facts may sometimes illumine it. It is a story of writings - their titles, their content, their forms and techniques, their emotional tones and overtones, their underlying philosophy, their human values. As a story of writings, it is also In measure a story Of the Amer ican consciousness. It is therefore a complex story, so complex that a single volume can hardly do more than chart its main out lines. And it is also a wonderfully rich and interesting story, so rich and so interesting that if I have been able to put it even partially on record, the reader perhaps may share the excitement I have found in following America's magnificent adventure in awareness. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Intimate Society Letters of the Eighteenth Century, Vol. 2 of 2: With Portraits, Facsimiles, and Other Illustrations The following letters from Dr. Moore, the father Of the Hero of Corunna, are interesting, for they Show the impressions made on an English gentleman's mind by society in various capitals of Europe in the eighteenth century. The care the writer takes Of the Duke of Hamilton, then a handsome and rather delicate youth, and the candour with which he describes the young man's foibles and love-makings, do him credit. The letters written with no idea Of publication, and giving pictures of the leading people at Rome, Florence, Vienna, who all received the Duke most cordially, are re freshingly spontaneous. On their return to England, Dr. Moore appears to have devoted himself to literature, publishing his View Of Society and Manners in France, Switzerland, Germany, and Italy in four volumes in 1779-81, and his well-known novel Zeluco in 1789. Douglas Duke Of Hamilton, the second son Of. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
