Book Critical Essays of the Eighteenth Century 1700 1725 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Critical Essays of the Eighteenth Century 1700 1725 Classic Reprint written by Willard Higley Durham and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-08 with total page 494 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Critical Essays of the Eighteenth Century, 1700-1725 Much current misunderstanding of the theories about literature held by eighteenth century Englishmen is due to the fact that a large part of the criticism published in their time has been difficult of access. It is the purpose of this volume to lessen the difficulty by putting into the hands of the student a group of representative critical essays. Most of these have not been reprinted since the eighteenth century, and one of them has become really rare. To the less familiar work has been added a selection from the criticism of Steele, Addison, and Pope in order that the survey might be more nearly complete. Essays displaying general theories and tendencies have been chosen rather than those discussing only individual books or plays. The volume aims to present, therefore, the more significant criticism published between 1700 and 1725. There are, however, two notable omissions. There is no representation either of Shaftesbury's criticism or of the several essays dealing with Shakespeare. The latter have been excluded on the ground that they are already easily accessible in D. Nichol Smith's Eighteenth Century Essays on Shakespeare. Shaftesbury has been excluded for reasons of space. It would have been impossible to represent him adequately without devoting to his work a disproportionate number of pages and consequently excluding other work of perhaps greater importance. This exclusion is the less to be regretted because the Characteristics have already been republished in an excellent modem edition. Book Eighteenth Century Essays on Shakespeare Classic Reprint

Download or read book Eighteenth Century Essays on Shakespeare Classic Reprint written by David Nichol Smith and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-02 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Eighteenth Century Essays on Shakespeare The purpose of this book is to give an account of Shakespeare's reputation during the eighteenth century, and to suggest that there are grounds for reconsidering the common opinion that the century did not give him his due. The nine Essays or Prefaces here reprinted may claim to represent the chief phases of Shakespearian study from the days of Dryden to those of Coleridge. It is one of the evils following in the train of the romantic revival that the judgments of the older school have been discredited or forgotten. The present volume shows that the eighteenth century knew many things which the nineteenth has rediscovered for itself. It is at least eighty years since most of these essays were reprinted. Rowe's Account of Shakespeare is given in its original and complete form for the first time, it is believed, since 1714; what was printed in the early Variorum editions, and previously in almost every edition since 1725, was Pope's version of Rowe's Account. Dennis's Essay has not appeared since the author republished it in 1721. In all cases the texts have been collated with the originals; and the more important changes in the editions published in the lifetime of the author are indicated in the Introduction or Notes. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Some Eighteenth Century Byways: And Other Essays To our admiration that in the sober texture of his book he has this strand of pure romance. He has succeeded, rightly and intentionally, in giving his story something of the atmosphere of a fairy tale. A nature kindly but never strong, he calls the Prince, but one to be remembered as the centre and inspirer of old chivalrous loyalty, as one who would have brought back a lost ago, an impossible realm of dreams. His kingdom is not of this world, wrote a French lady; and while we speak the painful truth about Charles, let us remember. Book England in the Eighteenth Century

Download or read book England in the Eighteenth Century written by Octavius Francis Christie and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-10 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from England in the Eighteenth Century: Essays in Verse Though these Essays attempt to present only a few aspects of English life in the Eighteenth Century, I hope the Reader may find some sort of connection between them. If not, the fault is miner; for the period has a unity, which, however hard to define, ought to be reflected in whatever is written about its history, manners and opinions. Sir Leslie Stephen said that the Century began in 1688 and ended in 1832, and surely he was right; Revolution and Reform are its natural boundaries. So I have added a Prologue and an Epilogue, to include those portions of the Seventeenth and Nineteenth Centuries which really belong to the Eighteenth. And yet, in a sense, the deaths of Pitt and Fox marked the close of the era; for with them - except that Sheridan still lived - ended the race of the great men, the Giants of the Century. Nor has England since seen their like. The meaning of an age must first be sought in its own literature and art; but let me admit my obligations to many modern interpreters from Lord Macaulay on wards, - too many to enumerate. Those who take an interest in these times will easily recognise to whom I have been indebted, and how great is the debt. Time that is somewhat sufiering from the need of it. Impelled by this feeling, I have acceded to the suggestion that 'i' should write the following essay on the'poetry of the Eighteenth Century, by way.of intro duction to selections from the writings of the foremost poets of that period. Chosen strictly in conformity with that principle, and with the above object, it will be found that. They are extracted from writers whose names are familiar 'to all educated persons, and that belong to the enduring storehouse of English literature. Were they at present as much read, and as justly estimated, as they' deserve to be, this essay would-have been unnecessary. Book A Book of English Essays 1600 1900 Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2018-01-16 with total page 470 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Book of English Essays (1600-1900) Of the word Essay it is necessary to say some thing, because at different times it has borne different meanings. Johnson's definition of it as a loose sally of the mind an irregular undigested piece covered its employment by authors to excuse shortcomings, and to disarm the critic in his examination of a work which boasted of no pretence to literature. Some such idea of admitted or implied failure in a worthy experiment adhered to Montaigne's use of the word in those Essaz's which were published in 1580. But the decay of this sense began in fact with this publication, although the author expressed his apology for being some thing fantastical For that very wandering from point to point which in Montaigne was a habit of mind, was developed by the English essayists of the eighteenth century into a deliberate study. Out of what Montaigne would have been only too pleased to call irregularity and want of finish they invented a literary quality which in Goldsmith rose to a perfection of carelessness in approaching and retreating from a subject. It was in another direction from that taken by Montaigne and his followers that Bacon enlarged the meaning of the word essay in literature. He applied it to his pieces not in the sense of an experiment but in the sense of a test or assay He weighed and examined his subjects one by one. With the grip of his intellect he clung to each separate subject as to a rock while he treated of it, refusing to dip to the invading wave of kindred ideas by which it was surrounded. In the dedica tion of his second edition of pieces to Prince Henry of Wales in 1612 he wrote of them as brief notes, set down rather significantly than curiously, which I have called Essays. The word is late, but the thing is ancient'. And he went on to point out that Seneca's epistles to Lucilius were, if read aright, nothing but essays. Book The Periodical Essayists of the Eighteenth Century With Illustrative Extracts From the Rarer Periodicals Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Periodical Essayists of the Eighteenth Century With Illustrative Extracts From the Rarer Periodicals Classic Reprint written by George S. Marr and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-10 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Periodical Essayists of the Eighteenth Century With Illustrative Extracts, From the Rarer Periodicals The present work is an endeavour to give an approximately complete and detailed survey of the periodical essay of the eighteenth century and its writers. In the preparation of the work, the author has seen and examined over one hundred and fifty periodicals. Many of these are now exceedingly rare, and full use has been made of the valuable collections in the great libraries: The British Museum Library, London; the Bodleian Library, Oxford; the Advocates', the Signet, and the University Libraries, Edinburgh. In addition the author has been privileged to see a number of periodicals in private collections. The question of arrangement presented difficulties. The simplest solution was to adopt as far as possible a chronological plan. The advantages of this scheme outweighed the disadvantage of a certain "catalogue-y" effect which was almost inevitable when so many periodicals were being passed under review. A number of illustrative extracts support the critical statements made. Up to the present time no work has appeared devoted exclusively to this subject and limited to this period. The work of Nathan Drake, carried out over a century ago, is only a partial exception to this statement. Accordingly it is hoped that this endeavour to deal with the whole field of the periodical essay in the eighteenth century may be found to be a contribution, however small, to the elucidation of the subject under review. Download or read book The English Church in the Eighteenth Century Classic Reprint written by Charles John Abbey and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-10-15 with total page 542 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The English Church in the Eighteenth Century The authors are indebted to their reviewers for many kind remarks and much careful criticism. They have endeavoured to correct all errors which have been thus pointed out to them. As the nature of this work has sometimes been a little mis apprehended, it should be added that its authors at no time intended it to be a regular history. When they first mapped out their respective shares in the joint undertaking, their design nad been to write a number of short essays relating to many different features in the religion and Church history of England in the Eighteenth Century. This general purpose was adhered to and it was only after much deliberation that the word Chapters was substituted for Essays.' There was, however, one important modification. Fewer subjects were, in the issue, specifically dis cussed, but these more in detail 3 while some questions - such, ' for instance, as that of the Church in the Colonies - were scarcely touched upon. Hence a certain disproportion of treatment, which a general introductory chapter could but partially remedy.
