Book European Porcelain in The Metropolitan Museum of Art

Download or read book European Porcelain in The Metropolitan Museum of Art written by Jeffrey Munger and published by Metropolitan Museum of Art. This book was released on 2018-05-09 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Porcelain imported from China was the most highly coveted new medium in sixteenth- and early seventeenth-century Europe. Its pure white color, translucency, and durability, as well as the delicacy of decoration, were impossible to achieve in European earthenware and stoneware. In response, European ceramic factories set out to discover the process of producing porcelain in the Chinese manner, with significant artistic, technical, and commercial ramifications for Britain and the Continent. Indeed, not only artisans, but kings, noble patrons, and entrepreneurs all joined in the quest, hoping to gain both prestige and profit from the enterprises they established. This beautifully illustrated volume showcases ninety works that span the late sixteenth to the mid-nineteenth century and reflect the major currents of European porcelain production. Each work is illustrated with glorious new photography, accompanied by analysis and interpretation by one of the leading experts in European decorative arts. Among the wide range of porcelains selected are rare blue-and-white wares and figures from Italy, superb examples from the Meissen factory in Germany and the Sèvres factory in France, and ceramics produced by leading British eighteenth-century artisans. Taken together, they reveal why the Metropolitan Museum’s holdings in this field are among the finest in the world. p.p1 {margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 14.0px Verdana}

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The great age of European ceramic design began around 1500 and ended in the early 19th century with the introduction of large-scale production of ceramics. In this illustrated history, with nearly 300 color and black and white photos and reproductions, curator Howard Coutts considers the main stylistic trendsRenaissance, Mannerism, Oriental, Rococo, and Neoclassicismas they were represented in such products as Italian Majolica, Dutch Delftware, Meissen and Svres porcelain, Staffordshire, and Wedgwood pottery. He pays close attention to changes in eating habits over the period, particularly the layout of a formal dinner, and discusses the development of ceramics as room decoration, the transmission of images via prints, marketing of ceramics and other luxury goods, and the intellectual background to Neoclassicism.

Book Godden s Guide to European Porcelain

Download or read book Godden s Guide to European Porcelain written by Geoffrey A. Godden and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new book from Britain's leading expert on ceramics breaks fresh ground. It is the first thorough exploration of the mass of decorative porcelain from Europe imported into Britain and the United States during the nineteenth century. There are many good books on continental porcelain, but almost without exception they deal with expensive eighteenth-century porcelains from the leading factories - rare pieces that most collectors cannot afford or even expect to see outside a museum. This book, by contrast, illustrates and discusses the more modest wares that so many people already own or collect, and fills in many of the yawning gaps that abound in ceramic literature. Chapters are devoted to the originals and the many copies of the well-known Meissen (or Dresden) porcelains, and to the reproductions of the valuable Sevres and Vienna wares. Other chapters deal with the main types of popular and available continental porcelains, Paris porcelains, and others that are so decorative and collectible. Full details, working periods, and the main marks are given for all the larger and more important European factories, together with photographs of a comprehensive range of examples. The book will be invaluable for all collectors, dealers, and auctioneers concerned with European porcelain in all its variety, and for anyone owning or having an interest in decorative china. It brings clarity to a vast and largely unexplored range of porcelain, examples of which are to be found in houses throughout the world.

Book 18th and 19th Century Porcelain Analysis

Download or read book 18th and 19th Century Porcelain Analysis written by Howell G. M. Edwards and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-07-13 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses the contributions made by analytical chemistry to the characterisation of 18th and early 19th Century English and Welsh porcelains commencing with the earliest reports of Sir Arthur Church and of Herbert Eccles and Bernard Rackham using chemical digestion techniques and concluding with the most recent instrumental experiments, which together span more than a hundred years of study. From the earliest experiments which required necessarily the sacrifice of significant portions of each specimen, which may already have been damaged , to the latest experiments which needed only microsampling or the non-destructive interrogation of valuable perfect specimens a comprehensive survey is undertaken of more than twenty manufactories of quality porcelains. The correlation is made between the quantitative elemental oxide determinations of the scanning electron microscopic diffraction and Xray fluorescence data and the qualitative molecular spectroscopic Raman data to demonstrate their complementarity and use in the holistic forensic assessment of the origin of the fired procelains ; this will form the groundwork for the adoption of analytical techniques for the attribution of unknown or questionable procelains to their potential source factories . The book will also examine the perception of what constitutes a porcelain and its definitions and examines the assignment of porcelains to types which currently employs the definitions of hard paste , soft paste , hybrid , magnesian and bone china from the conclusions derived from the analytical data and a consideration of the raw materials employed in their manufacturing processes. During the discussion of this analytical evidence several themes and protocols have been established for its utilisation in the potential identification of porcelains and several case studies undertaken for this purpose are cited. The book will be of interest to analytical scientists , to museum ceramics curators and to ceramics historians.
