Book excerpt: Excerpt from Eighteen Centuries of the Orthodox Greek Church The present Work is an attempt to supply an acknowledged want, and to give, in a popular form, a history of the oldest Church in Christendom; the Church of the land hallowed by the sacred memories of our Saviour. To write a history of the Greek Church, says John Mason Neale, whose own valuable work was cut short, through his early death at the age of forty-six, is a difficult and a dangerous task. It seems, therefore, a presumptuous undertaking; my plea for indulgence must go for its worth; but that I am the owner of the house where Hymns Ancient and Modern, to which Dr. Neale was so valuable a contributor, saw their birth; where the first Committee meetings were held, and the chief contributors, he probably in the number, frequently met; is the excuse I plead, to be, in my humbler endeavour, his successor. Dr. Neale might have added, that to write a history of the down-trodden Greek Church is also, in one sense, an unwelcome task; for it necessitates controversy; to me religious controversy is distasteful; and, as the lengthening shadows of the evening of life warn me that this may be the last which I shall write, I should have preferred a work of a different character. The conflicts for supremacy between Constantinople and Rome, and the arrogance and injustice of the latter were, in only a less degree than the Saracens and Ottomans, the cause of the fall of the Greek Church. Book Antiquity in Print

Download or read book Antiquity in Print written by Daniel Orrells and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2024-05-16 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Daniel Orrells examines the ways in which the ancient world was visualized for Enlightenment readers, and reveals how antiquarian scholarship emerged as the principal technology for envisioning ancient Greek culture, at a time when very few people could travel to Greece which was still part of the Ottoman Empire. Offering a fresh account of the rise of antiquarianism in the 18th century, Orrells shows how this period of cultural progression was important for the invention of classical studies. In particular, the main focus of this book is on the visionary experimentalism of antiquarian book production, especially in relation to the contentious nature of ancient texts. With the explosion of the Quarrel between the Ancients and the Moderns, eighteenth-century intellectuals, antiquarians and artists such as Giambattista Vico, Johann Joachim Winckelmann, the Comte de Caylus, James Stuart, Julien-David Leroy, Giovanni Battista Piranesi and Pierre-François Hugues d'Hancarville all became interested in how printed engravings of ancient art and archaeology could visualize a historical narrative. These figures theorized the relationship between ancient text and ancient material and visual culture - theorizations which would pave the way to foundational questions at the heart of the discipline of classical studies and neoclassical aesthetics.

Book Anti Methodism and Theological Controversy in Eighteenth Century England

Download or read book Anti Methodism and Theological Controversy in Eighteenth Century England written by Simon Lewis and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2022-01-27 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Wesley and George Whitefield are remembered as founders of Methodism, one of the most influential movements in the history of modern Christianity. Characterized by open-air and itinerant preaching, eighteenth-century Methodism was a divisive phenomenon, which attracted a torrent of printed opposition, especially from Anglican clergymen. Yet, most of these opponents have been virtually forgotten. Anti-Methodism and Theological Controversy in Eighteenth-Century England is the first large-scale examination of the theological ideas of early anti-Methodist authors. By illuminating a very different perspective on Methodism, Simon Lewis provides a fundamental reappraisal of the eighteenth-century Church of England and its doctrinal priorities. For anti-Methodist authors, attacking Wesley and Whitefield was part of a wider defence of 'true religion', which demonstrates the theological vitality of the much-derided Georgian Church. This book, therefore, places Methodism firmly in its contemporary theological context, as part of the Church of England's continuing struggle to define itself theologically.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection brings together fifteen studies on the survival and adaptation of the Orthodox religious and cultural tradition in the societies of Southeastern Europe after the fall of Constantinople, a world so often misunderstood and misinterpreted. This problem of cultural history is examined in a diversity of contexts and on multiple levels of analysis in order to elucidate issues of broader concern to social theory such as the fluidity and dynamic character of identity, the intricate encounter of religion and politics and the challenge of secular world views such as the Enlightenment and nationalism to traditional religious outlooks. The author argues consistently against all forms of reductionism, converses at length with the sources in order to pose questions to conventional views and invites the historical imagination to recover and understand a world submerged by the nationalist interpretation of the past. This task involves the recovery of the geographical pluralism that made Orthodox culture a truly transnational phenomenon. The collection accordingly brings into focus both the epicentres of Orthodox culture and symbolism such as Mt Athos and Constantinople, but also its hinterlands in Asia Minor and the Balkans.

The body about which this book treats always calls itself the Orthodox Eastern Church, and in the East we call them Orthodox and they call us Catholics (unless when they mean to be rude), and no one thinks for a moment that either uses these names except as technical terms.
