Book Eight Thirteenth century Rolls of Arms in French and Anglo Norman Blazon

Download or read book Eight Thirteenth century Rolls of Arms in French and Anglo Norman Blazon written by Gerard J. Brault and published by Penn State University Press. This book was released on 1972 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: True heraldry, that is, "the systematic use of hereditary devices centred on the shield," is known to have existed as early as the second quarter of the twelfth century. Until recently, its expansion throughout Europe had been studied chiefly on the basis of the depiction on seals, manuscripts, sculpture, and other comparable surfaces with relatively little scholarly attention being accorded to blazon, the manner of describing coats of arms. The present volume is outgrowth of the author's Early Blazon (published at the Clarendon Press, Oxford University), a study of the language of heraldry as it is recorded in the earliest blazoned rolls of arms--lists of names accompanied by descriptions of armorial bearings--and in contemporary sources. The rolls, which are reproduced in the original French, provide valuable data, often available nowhere else, about the great men of the Middle Ages and they are an essential source of information for the study of heraldry as well as genealogy, language, and social history.

Book Minstrels and Minstrelsy in Late Medieval England

Download or read book Minstrels and Minstrelsy in Late Medieval England written by Richard Rastall and published by Boydell & Brewer. This book was released on 2023-04-04 with total page 477 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A major new study piecing together the intriguing but fragmentary evidence surrounding the lives of minstrels to highlight how these seemingly peripheral figures were keenly involved with all aspects of late medieval communities. Minstrels were a common sight and sound in the late Middle Ages. Aristocrats, knights and ladies heard them on great occasions (such as Edward I's wedding feast for his daughter Elizabeth in 1296) and in quieter moments in their chambers; town-dwellers heard and saw them in civic processions (when their sound drew attention to the spectacle); and even in the countryside people heard them at weddings, church-ales and other parish celebrations. But who were the minstrels, and what did they do? How did they live, and how easily did they make a living? How did they perform, and in what conditions? The evidence is intriguing but fragmentary, including literary and iconographic sources and, most importantly, the financial records of royal and aristocratic households and of towns. These offer many insights, although they are often hard to fit into any coherent picture of the minstrels' lives and their place in society. It is easy to see the minstrels as peripheral figures, entertainers who had no central place in the medieval world. Yet they were full members of it, interacting with the ordinary people around them, as well as with the ruling classes: carrying letters and important verbal messages, some lending huge sums of money to the king (to finance Henry V's Agincourt campaign in 1415, for instance), some regular and necessary civic servants, some committing crimes or suffering the crimes of others. In this book Rastall and Taylor bring to bear the available evidence to enlarge and enrich our view of the minstrel in late medieval society.

Book Illuminating the Roman D Alexandre

Download or read book Illuminating the Roman D Alexandre written by Mark Cruse and published by Boydell & Brewer Ltd. This book was released on 2011 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Survey of one of the most important surviving medieval manuscripts reveals much of its contemporary cultural, literary and social milieu. Oxford, Bodleian Library, MS Bodley 264 is one of the most famous and most sumptuous illuminated manuscripts of the entire Middle Ages. Completed in 1344 in Tournai, in what is now Belgium, the manuscript preserves the fullest version of the interpolated Old French Roman d'Alexandre (Romance of Alexander the Great), and some of the most vivid illustrations of any medieval romance, ranking amongst the greatest achievements of the illuminator's art, its borders in particular offering a panorama of medieval society and imagination. A celebration of courtliness, a commemoration of urban chivalry, a mirror for the prince instructing in the arts of rule, and a meditation on crusade, it manifests the extraordinary richness and creativity of late medieval manuscript culture. This study examines the manuscript as a monumental expression of the beliefs and social practices of its day, placing it in its historical and artistic context; it also analyzes its later reception in England, where the addition of a Middle English Alexander poem and of Marco Polo's Voyages reflects changing concepts of language, historiography, and geography. Mark Cruse is Assistant Professor of French, School of International Letters and Cultures, Arizona State University.

Book The Queen of Sicily and Gothic Stained Glass in Mussy and Tonnerre

Download or read book The Queen of Sicily and Gothic Stained Glass in Mussy and Tonnerre written by Meredith P. Lillich and published by American Philosophical Society. This book was released on 1998 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following the death of St. Louis, a new court fashion of ostentatious display was introduced into French stained glass with the advent of Queen Marie de Brabant, who in 1274 became the second wife of St. Louis's heir Philippe le hardi. Little stained glass in this new style survives, since the very motifs that made it different -- large donor 'portraits, ' elaborate heraldry, lavish name-inscriptions -- were targets of vandalism. This study reconstructs two ensembles in the new style, at Mussy-sur-Seine in southern Champagne & at the medieval hospital of Tonnerre in Burgundy. Both can be connected with the extraordinary figure of Marguerite de Bourgogne. Titled the Queen of Sicily, she was a revered agent of Christian charity of the Gothic era. 50+ illustrations.

Book The Making of the Bibles Moralis es Volume I The Manuscripts

Download or read book The Making of the Bibles Moralis es Volume I The Manuscripts written by and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Bibles Moralisées are by far the richest and most complex attempt at biblical illustration ever undertaken. Seven of them survive today, made primarily for the kings and queens of France between the early thirteenth and late fifteenth centuries. John Lowden's pioneering two-volume study brings new material to light and offers a wholly new approach to understanding the Bibles, which contain literally thousands of figures. Volume I, based on exhaustive codicological analysis, considers the making and the later history of use of each of the manuscripts. Volume II investigates in detail the treatment of one portion of the Bible, the Book of Ruth, in all the manuscripts. Discussion is supported by many new photographs in color and black and white. Together the two volumes challenge conventional wisdom about both the Bibles Moralisées and the relationship of word and image in medieval culture.
