Book The Theological Significance of Alphabetic Acrostics in the Psalter

Download or read book The Theological Significance of Alphabetic Acrostics in the Psalter written by Jeffrey Wayne Schuliger and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Psalter contains eight alphabetic acrostics -- four in Book I (Pss 9/10, 25, 34, 37) and four in Book V (Pss 111, 112, 119, 145). No scholarly consensus has been achieved in understanding the purpose of this poetic form -- whether it simply is an artificial structure or whether it adds significantly to the meaning of the psalm. This thesis builds upon recent rhetorical studies of the Psalms by exploring the theological significance of the acrostic form in the Psalter. Through close readings of each of the Book I acrostic psalms and comparisons with those in Book V, common words and main ideas were collected and interactions between the form and content of these acrostics were discerned. The conclusion reached in this study is that the alphabetic acrostic form serves as a covenant reminder, a metaphor for hope, a message-sign of the covenant reality of God. Thus, the theological significance of the alphabetic acrostic psalms is to highlight the covenant character and commitment of God in order to encourage inward hope and outward obedience among God's people ..."--Abstract.
