Book Estimating Conditional Treatment Effects of EIB Lending to SMEs in Europe

Download or read book Estimating Conditional Treatment Effects of EIB Lending to SMEs in Europe written by Alessandro Barbera and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We estimate heterogeneous treatment effects of the EIB financial support on European firms between 2008 and 2015. The relevant control groups are created with propensity score matching and the effects are estimated in a difference-in-differences framework, controlling for firm-level and country-sector-year fixed effects. We find that the positive effects of EIBsupported lending on job creation and investments were larger for smaller and younger firms. Moreover, we find evidence that longer maturities and more advantageous loan pricing are associated with larger employment and investment effects, while no larger impact is observed for larger loan volumes. Overall, the results suggest that benefits of the EIB support are rather observed on an intensive, rather than on an extensive, margin.

Book Finance for SMEs European Regulation and Capital Markets Union

Download or read book Finance for SMEs European Regulation and Capital Markets Union written by Patrizio Messina and published by Kluwer Law International B.V.. This book was released on 2019-06-19 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the European Commission’s announcement of the Capital Markets Union in 2016, a major step was at last taken to provide for the special needs of small and medium enterprises (SMEs). This book presents the first in-depth legal analysis of the challenges that SMEs have to face when managing their balance sheets and trying to attract investors, what alternative financing tools are most effective and how recent legislation reaches fair and convenient conditions for SMEs. The analysis focuses specifically on the Capital Markets Union structure and on other European initiatives that support and enhance SMEs’ raising money on capital markets in order to better diversify their investments and plan a growth and development strategy. An updated description of the European framework is provided, together with references to relevant national systems. Issues and topics covered include the following: need for long-lasting access to funds; securitization for SMEs; SME Z-score; crowdfunding; and peer-to-peer, minibond and accounts receivables financing. Case study analyses furnish a deep understanding of the financial structures and their main features. Appendices include English texts of the main European Union (EU) legal documents pertaining to SMEs. For SMEs discouraged by over-regulation designed for larger businesses, and who find themselves in difficulties when they have to face the required process, this book will prove to be of immeasurable practical value. This book represents one of the first publications on SMEs and finance and contains data and information resulting from a deep and well-focused research on the topic. The added value of this study will allow the academics to understand the main issues related to this topic and will provide for a steady basis for further research and analysis with regards to law and economics for SMEs. Furthermore, it will be also warmly welcomed by practitioners in the area of SME financing and will be useful to support them in the selection of the most appropriate tools for their clients. Banks and interested EU officials will also value its clear and straightforward approach to the subject.

Book EIB Working Papers 2019 07 What firms don t like about bank loans New evidence from survey data

Download or read book EIB Working Papers 2019 07 What firms don t like about bank loans New evidence from survey data written by European Investment Bank and published by European Investment Bank. This book was released on 2019-10-15 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We use the association between non-financial firms and their banks, an information available in the European Investment Bank Investment Survey (EIBIS), to disentangle the effects of borrowers' and lenders' financial weakness on the satisfaction with the loan contracted. The dataset matches survey data of non-financial firms about their satisfaction with bank lending with their financial data and the financial data of their banks. We find evidence of both demand and supply factors determining firm satisfaction with bank loan financing: non-financial firms with weaker finances and those financed by weaker banks are less satisfied with their bank financing. We also find that the impact of supply factors differs across regions within the EU: the effect of bank's financial weakness on borrower satisfaction is not significant in core countries but is in periphery countries.

Book Productivity Drag from Small and Medium Sized Enterprises in Japan

Download or read book Productivity Drag from Small and Medium Sized Enterprises in Japan written by Mariana Colacelli and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2019-07-01 with total page 21 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Productivity growth in Japan, as in most advanced economies, has moderated. This paper finds supportive evidence for the important role of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in explaining Japan’s modest productivity growth. Results show a substantial dispersion in firm-level productivity growth across sectors and even across firms within the same sector. SMEs, on average, exhibit lower productivity growth than non-SMEs in Japan, with smaller and older SMEs showing particularly low productivity growth. Estimates suggest that boosting productivity growth in all of the worst-performing SMEs could improve overall productivity growth by up to 1.8 percentage points. The SME credit guarantee system, SME financing constraints, demographic factors, and lack of intangible capital investment are discussed as contributors to the slow productivity growth of Japan’s small and old SMEs.

It identifies many ways in which current investment is still structurally inadequate, given the legacy effects of the recent crisis and the great challenges that lie ahead. Book Stepping Up Venture Capital to Finance Innovation in Europe

Download or read book Stepping Up Venture Capital to Finance Innovation in Europe written by Mr. Nathaniel G Arnold and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2024-07-12 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Relative to the US, productivity growth and investment in R&D in lagging in the EU, where it is more difficult to finance and scale up promising, innovative startups. Many of the most successful EU startups move elsewhere for financing, causing the EU to lose out on both the direct growth benefits and positive spillovers from these innovative firms. The EU could nurture innovative startups by accelerating the development of its venture capital (VC) ecosystem. Reducing regulatory frictions, especially ones that deter pensions funds and insurers from investing in VC, combined with well-designed tax incentives for R&D investments could help accelerate the development of the VC sector. These and other key CMU initiatives, such as the consolidation of stock markets and reforming and harmonizing insolvency regimes, will take time. Given the urgency to boost innovation, giving public financial institutions like the European Investment Fund a more active and expanded role in kickstarting VC markets where needed and in familiarizing investors with the VC asset class can be a helpful interim step.
