Book The History of the Peoples of the Eastern Desert

Download or read book The History of the Peoples of the Eastern Desert written by Hans Barnard and published by Cotsen Institute of Archaeology Press. This book was released on 2012-12-31 with total page 521 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The last quarter century has seen extensive research on the ports of the Red Sea coast of Egypt, the road systems connecting them to the Nile, and the mines and quarries in the region. Missing has been a systematic study of the peoples of the Eastern Desert--the area between the Red Sea and the Nile Valley--in whose territories these ports, roads, mines, and quarries were located. The historical overview of the Eastern Desert in the shape of a roughly chronological narrative presented in this book fills that gap. The multidisciplinary perspective focuses on the long-term history of the region. The extensive range of topics addressed includes specific historical periods, natural resources, nomadic survival strategies, ancient textual data, and the interaction between Christian hermits and their neighbors. The breadth of perspective does not sacrifice depth, for all authors deal in some detail with the specifics of their subject matter. As a whole, this collection provides an outline of the history and sociology of the Eastern Desert unparalleled in any language for its comprehensiveness. As such, it will be the essential starting point for future research on the Eastern Desert. Includes a CD of eleven audio files with music of the Ababda Nomads, and six short videos of Ababda culture.

Book The Gurob Ship Cart Model and Its Mediterranean Context

Download or read book The Gurob Ship Cart Model and Its Mediterranean Context written by Shelley Wachsmann and published by Texas A&M University Press. This book was released on 2013-01-09 with total page 498 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Shelley Wachsmann began his analysis of the small ship model excavated by assistants of famed Egyptologist W. M. F. Petrie in Gurob, Egypt, in 1920, he expected to produce a brief monograph that would shed light on the model and the ship type that it represented. Instead, Wachsmann discovered that the model held clues to the identities and cultures of the enigmatic Sea Peoples, to the religious practices of ancient Egypt and Greece, and to the oared ships used by the Bronze Age Mycenaean Greeks. Although found in Egypt, the prototype of the Gurob model was clearly an Aegean-style galley of a type used by both the Mycenaeans and the Sea Peoples. The model is the most detailed representation presently known of this vessel type, which played a major role in changing the course of world history. Contemporaneous textual evidence for Sherden—one of the Sea Peoples—settled in the region suggests that the model may be patterned after a galley of that culture. Bearing a typical Helladic bird-head decoration topping the stempost, with holes along the sheer strakes confirming the use of stanchions, the model was found with four wheels and other evidence for a wagon-like support structure, connecting it with European cultic prototypes. The online resources that accompany the book illustrate Wachsmann’s research and analysis. They include 3D interactive models that allow readers to examine the Gurob model on their computers as if held in the hand, both in its present state and in two hypothetical reconstructions. The online component also contains high-resolution color photos of the model, maps and satellite photos of the site, and other related materials. Offering a wide range of insights and evidence for linkages among ancient Mediterranean peoples and traditions, The Gurob Ship-Cart Model and Its Mediterranean Context presents an invaluable asset for anyone interested in the complexities of cultural change in the eastern Mediterranean at the end of the Bronze Age and the beginning of the Iron Age. The Gurob ship-cart model is/was part of an exhibition entitled Beyond the Nile: Egypt and the Classical World, at the J. Paul Getty Center (March 27-September 9, 2018). Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The studies collected here are presented to Brunilde Sismondo Ridgway to honor an unusually inspiring and energetic teacher, a dedicated and prolific scholar, and a profoundly humane and caring human being. Bruni's passion for Greek sculpture, her constantly inquiring mind, and her bold questioning of long-accepted positions have sparked many stimulating discussions, often planting the germ of an idea to which students return in their own work. The themes here discussed reflect many of Bruni's scholarly interests. Most are on sculptural topics, but numismatics, architecture, and Iron Age Cyprus are also represented. Discussions focus on interpretations of technique and style, consider single sculptures, groups, and whole monuments, the well known as well as the unusual. University Museum Monograph, 100

Book Egypt from Alexander to the Copts

Download or read book Egypt from Alexander to the Copts written by Roger S. Bagnall and published by American University in Cairo Press. This book was released on 2017-05-01 with total page 590 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After its conquest by Alexander the Great in 332 bc, Egypt was ruled for the next 300 years by the Ptolemaic dynasty founded by Ptolemy I, one of Alexander's generals. With the defeat of Cleopatra VII in 30 bc, Egypt became a province of the Roman Empire, and later of the Byzantine Empire. For a millennium it was one of the wealthiest, most populous and important lands of the multicultural Mediterranean civilization under Greek and Roman rule. The thousand years from Alexander to the Arab conquest in ad 641 are rich in archaeological interest and well documented by 50,000 papyri in Greek, Egyptian, Latin, and other languages. But travelers and others interested in the remains of this period are ill-served by most guides to Egypt, which concentrate on the pharaonic buildings. This book redresses the balance, with clear and concise descriptions related to documents and historical background that enable us to appreciate the fascinating cities, temples, tombs, villages, churches, and monasteries of the Hellenistic, Roman, and Late Antique periods. Written by a dozen leading specialists and reflecting the latest discoveries and research, it provides an expert visitor's guide to the principal cities, many off the well-worn tourist paths. It also offers a vivid picture of Egyptian society at differing economic and social levels.
