Book The Monuments of Egypt and Nubia

Download or read book The Monuments of Egypt and Nubia written by ippolito rosellini and published by American Univ in Cairo Press. This book was released on 2003 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following the Napoleonic military campaign in Egypt (1798-1801), Europe rediscovered the ancient Egyptian civilization, and later expeditions deepened and amplified knowledge of the country's archaeological monuments, giving birth to a new science, Egyptology, which is still very active. In 1828, Charles X of France and Grand Duke Leopold II of Tuscany financed the first international scientific expedition to Egypt, the aim of which was to explore the historic monuments of the country. Unlike the Napoleonic Commission, the Franco-Tuscan expedition was able to take advantage of the understanding of hieroglyphic script and therefore examine the antiquities more systematically. The leaders of the expedition were Jean-François Champollion, the man who deciphered the hieroglyphs using the Rosetta Stone, and Ippolito Rosellini. Born in Pisa in 1800, Rosellini was noted for his study of the monuments, deciphering of the hieroglyphs and, above all, for his contribution to science in the form of his illustrated work, The Monuments of Egypt and Nubia. This volume recounts the era of early Egyptology at the start of the nineteenth century, and presents the most beautiful plates from Rosellini's original work made following the long expedition.

Book Ancient History From the Monuments

Download or read book Ancient History From the Monuments written by S. Birch and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-02 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ancient History From the Monuments: Egypt From the Earliest Times to B. C. 300 Ancient Egypt is one of the two great countries of the world which has performed so important a part in the religious history of the East, that its annals, as derived from the monuments, are of the greatest importance to understanding the development of human civilisation and the tendency of religious thought. It was in it that the Hebrews passed their first captivity, entering it as a nomad race with their flocks and herds, and leaving the house of bondage with the knowledge and arts of its early civilisation. The land itself, called in the hieroglyphics Kam or the Black, from the colour of the alluvial mud of the Nile, bore several other names in the Egyptian language. To the Hebrews it was known as Mitsraim or the Two Mitsrs, an appellation found also in the Assyrian as Musr, and the Persian as Mudraya, but the Greeks called it Aiguptos, a word of uncertain derivation retained at the present day as Egypt, by which it is universally known. No country could have been better fitted for the cradle of the human race: blessed with a rainless sky, a fertile soil, an incessant supply of water, and protected by its conformation from the disaster of early conquest, it possessed all that was necessary for the happiness and safety of its population.
