Book Egypt as a Monster in the Book of Ezekiel

Download or read book Egypt as a Monster in the Book of Ezekiel written by Safwat Marzouk and published by Mohr Siebeck. This book was released on 2015-06-05 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Appealing to Monster Theory and the ancient Near Eastern motif of "Chaoskampf," Safwat Marzouk argues that the paradoxical character of the category of the monster is what prompts the portrayal of Egypt as a monster in the book of Ezekiel. While on the surface the monster seems to embody utter difference, underlying its otherness there is a disturbing sameness. Though the monster may be defeated and its body dismembered, it is never completely annihilated. Egypt is portrayed as a monster in the book of Ezekiel because Egypt represents the threat of religious assimilation. Although initially the monstrosity of Egypt is constructed because of the shared elements of identity between Egypt and Israel, the prophet flips this imagery of monster in order to embody Egypt as a monstrous Other. In a combat myth, YHWH defeats the monster and dismembers its body. Despite its near annihilation, Egypt, in Ezekiel's rhetoric, is not entirely obliterated. Rather, it is kept at bay, hovering at the periphery, questioning Israel's identity.

Book Egypt on the Pentateuch s Ideological Map

Download or read book Egypt on the Pentateuch s Ideological Map written by Franz V. Greifenhagen and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2003-04-01 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the references to Egypt in the Pentateuch--twice as dense as in the rest of the Hebrew Bible--in the context of the production of the text's final form during the Persian period. Here, as Greifenhagen shows, Egypt functions ideologically as the primary "other" over against which Israel's identity is constructed, while its role in Israel's formation appears as subsidiary and as a superseded stage in a master narrative which locates Israel's ethnic roots in Mesopotamia. But the presentation of this powerful neighbour is equivocal: a dominant anti-Egyptian stance coexists with alternative, though subordinate, pro-Egyptian views, suggesting that the Pentateuchal narrative was produced within a context of ideological conflict over attitudes towards a land that provided a home for Jewish fugitives and emigrants.

Book Lost Art of Intercession Expanded Edition

Download or read book Lost Art of Intercession Expanded Edition written by James W. Goll and published by Destiny Image Publishers. This book was released on 2007-04-28 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over two hundred and fifty years ago, this verse was burned into the hearts of Moravian refugees in the tiny community of Herrnhut in eastern Germany. Their commitment to restore the Watch of the Lord, through 24 hours of unbroken prayer and intercession continued for more than 100 years. God is calling His warriors once again to mount the Watch of the Lord. When God s people send up the incense of prayer and worship, God will send down supernatural power, anointing, and acts of intervention. Author James W. Goll combined with the writings of E.M. Bounds paints an inspiring picture of prophetic clarity and prayerful urgency that sound God s clarion call to His Church. Now is the time to mount the walls with prayer and praise, and restore The Lost Art of Intercession.

Book Iconographic Exegesis of the Hebrew Bible Old Testament

Download or read book Iconographic Exegesis of the Hebrew Bible Old Testament written by Izaak J. de Hulster and published by Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht. This book was released on 2015-10-28 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Iconographic exegesis combines the study of biblical texts (exegesis) with the study of ancient expressions of visual art (iconography).Studying ancient visual art that is contemporary with the documents of the Old Testament gives remarkable insight, not only on the meaning and historical context of the biblical text, but also because it facilitates greater understanding of how the ancient authors and audiences saw, thought, and made sense of the world. Iconography thus merits close attention as another avenue that can lead to a more nuanced and more complete understanding of the biblical text. Each chapter of this book provides an exegesis of a particular biblical text or theme. The book is organized around the tripartite structure of the Hebrew Bible, and demonstrates that iconographical exegesis is pertinent to "every nook and cranny" of the Bible.Within the three parts, there is special emphasis on Genesis, Isaiah, and the Psalms in order to make the book attractive for classes that deal with one or more of these books and might therefore include an iconographic perspective. In addition to connecting with a major issue in biblical interpretation, theology, or visual studies each chapter will end with one or two exercises directing the reader/student to comparable texts and images, enabling them to apply what was described in the chapter for themselves. This approach enables beginners as well as advanced readers to integrate iconography into their toolbox of exegetical skills.
