Book excerpt: Imagine. Imagine the world of sports without ego. No more trashtalking, showboating, cheating, cheap shots, or running up the score. No more wackadoo parents and coaches ruining youth sports. No more prima donna athletes with an inflated view of their own importance. The win-at-all-costs mentality? Gone. The me-first athlete? History. Greedy owners that put their wallets ahead of what's best for the game? Bye-bye. As John Lennon once sang, "Imagine . . ." Sports have always brought out the best and worst in people. One of the compelling aspects of sports is that character is openly on display. Problem is, the ugly side of sports is getting way too loud these days. The ego in sports has run amok. And as the ego takes center stage, win-at-all-costs (WAAC) and profit-at-all-costs (PAAC) mentalities and behaviors begin to dominate. Things like sportsmanship start to take a backseat. Nevertheless, despite all the ego- and greed-based negativity in today's sports world, there are still some pearls out there, little stories in the back of the sports section that stir the soul. While too many sports center headlines bring forth feelings of shame, it's the snippets about obscure athletes that bless us with shining examples of the human spirit and give us reason for hope. This is a book of short essays about sport at its best and sport at its worst. Hopefully, the book is somewhat entertaining and occasionally even enlightening. Ultimately, however, the book's goal is to inspire those who love sports to find a way to make the sports world a better place to be. And that means a place with a lot less ego and a lot more soul. Because in the big picture, it really is about how you play the game. (From the introduction)

Book Ego and Soul

  • Author : John Carroll
  • Publisher : Catapult
  • Release : 2010-03-02

  • Pages : 335 pages

Download or read book Ego and Soul written by John Carroll and published by Catapult. This book was released on 2010-03-02 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The crisis of meaning is the issue of our time. The old beliefs that guided the West have faded, without credible replacement. Who lives well? What characterizes the good life? More particularly, what may we in the modern West claim about ourselves? And, ultimately, does how we live and what we do make any sense? Concerned for today's society and its problems as they relate to meaning, faith, belief, morale, moral attachment, and social direction, John Carroll surveys these questions in Ego and Soul. He examines how people in their ordinary and everyday lives grope unconsciously for direction, casting lines into the transcendent in the hope of a catch. He focuses on the main areas of modern life—work, sport, popular culture, family, friendship, intimacy, shopping, tourism, computers, cars, do–it–yourself renovation, our democratic temper, and the retreat into nature. He also examines high culture, the upper–middle–class elites, and the universities, tracing why they have lost their way and failed to provide a language that might help modern people understand their condition. Ego and Soul offers a surprising and compelling new look at the way we live today, and the way we try to make sense of our lives.

Book Ego Is the Enemy

Download or read book Ego Is the Enemy written by Ryan Holiday and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2016-06-14 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The instant Wall Street Journal, USA Today, and international bestseller “While the history books are filled with tales of obsessive visionary geniuses who remade the world in their image with sheer, almost irrational force, I’ve found that history is also made by individuals who fought their egos at every turn, who eschewed the spotlight, and who put their higher goals above their desire for recognition.” —from the prologue Many of us insist the main impediment to a full, successful life is the outside world. In fact, the most common enemy lies within: our ego. Early in our careers, it impedes learning and the cultivation of talent. With success, it can blind us to our faults and sow future problems. In failure, it magnifies each blow and makes recovery more difficult. At every stage, ego holds us back. Ego Is the Enemy draws on a vast array of stories and examples, from literature to philosophy to history. We meet fascinating figures such as George Marshall, Jackie Robinson, Katharine Graham, Bill Belichick, and Eleanor Roosevelt, who all reached the highest levels of power and success by conquering their own egos. Their strategies and tactics can be ours as well. In an era that glorifies social media, reality TV, and other forms of shameless self-promotion, the battle against ego must be fought on many fronts. Armed with the lessons in this book, as Holiday writes, “you will be less invested in the story you tell about your own specialness, and as a result, you will be liberated to accomplish the world-changing work you’ve set out to achieve.”

Book excerpt: "Much of what people do today disguises a desperate search for meaning, the result of the crisis of belief that has become the West's major problem. This substantially revised edition of Ego and Soul tackles this underlying reality head-on. It examines main areas of modern life including work, sport, intimacy, shopping, tourism, computers, and a retreat into nature to discover what is driving people, what sense they are making of their lives. On the one hand, the elites and their high culture suffer a loss of confidence, and aimless consumerism is widespread; on the other, powerful new myths arise, as with sporting heroes. Ego and Soul also looks at high culture, the upper-middle-class elites and the universities, tracing why they have lost their way, failing to provide a language that might help a new understanding. It counters this weakness by trying to speak on behalf of the time, to make sense of its endeavours."--Provided by publisher.

Book Sports Virtues and Vices

Download or read book Sports Virtues and Vices written by Mike McNamee and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2008-05-21 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sports have long played an important role in society. By exploring the evolving link between sporting behaviour and the prevailing ethics of the time this comprehensive and wide-ranging study illuminates our understanding of the wider social significance of sport. The primary aim of Sports, Virtues and Vices is to situate ethics at the heart of sports via ‘virtue ethical’ considerations that can be traced back to the gymnasia of ancient Greece. The central theme running through the book is that sports are effectively modern morality plays: universal practices of moral education for the masses and - when coached, officiated and played properly - a valuable vehicle for ethical development. Including a wealth of contemporary sporting examples, the book explores key ethical issues such as: How the pursuit of sporting excellence can lead to harm Doping, greed and shame Biomedical technology as a challenge to the virtue of elite athletes Defining a ‘virtue ethical account’ in sport Family vices and virtues in sport Written by one of the world's foremost sports philosophers, this book powerfully unites the fields of sports ethics and medical ethics. It is essential reading for all students and scholars with an interest in the ethics and philosophy of sport.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Brain, Mind, Soul, and Spirit By: Mack E. Crayton III, Ph. D. As both a Christian and a scientist, two entities that many consider to be opposite of one another, Mack E. Crayton III, Ph.D. explores the often-overlooked convergence between the science of the mind and the truths of the spirit. Inspired by his work in Genetics research, Dr. Crayton wrote Brain, Mind, Soul, and Spirit for three powerful reasons. He wants to prove that Biological science and Biblical Scriptures support each other much more than they contradict each other. He wants to provide a straightforward science reference book for the clergy that can be used to prepare sermons and lessons. Finally, he wants to pair Biblical Scripture with scientific data to ask whether modern and alternative interpretations of Scripture are warranted. Many historical interpretations of Biblical Scripture have left people feeling marginalized when it comes to matters of the brain and mind as they relate to mental illness; determining when human life begins or ends; understanding our spirituality and sexualities; and the inherent powers of the human mind. This religious marginalization has caused millions of people to live unfulfilled lives, life without love, and have driven others to suicide or acts of terrorism. Complete with discussion questions at the end of each chapter, Brain, Mind, Soul, and Spirit invites you to a greater knowledge of God’s creation, a knowledge which will decrease fear and foster increased inclusiveness and love.
