Perhaps due to the nature of these differences, Arab-Western relations have been described as existing on one of the world’s great cultural fault-lines. Debate about the potential effects, both positive and negative, of English-medium education and the learning of English in the region’s schools and universities is one expression of this. Even as debate continues, issues of politics, culture, social mobility, and identity are played out in the English language classrooms of the Arab world on a daily basis. The current volume explores some of the concerns related to the place of English and English-medium education in the Arab world. It examines issues of the relationship between English, Arabic, cultural identity and power in the region within a historical and contemporary framework; the experiences of learners from Arabic-medium secondary schools adjusting to English-medium colleges; and the challenges and potential rewards of promoting student-centered classrooms and technology in traditionally teacher-centered environments. These issues are explored from the perspectives of teachers, students, researchers and other stakeholders in Oman, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Sudan.

Book excerpt: This thesis was concerned with studying the perception of English teachers' toward differentiated assessments in Cycle two at Al Ain public schools. The main purpose of this thesis was to identify the perception of English teachers toward differentiated assessments, recognize the different types of assessments teachers are using in their classrooms and understand how these assessments may inform teaching and learning. A questionnaire had been distributed to Cycle two schools. Also semi-structured interviews were conducted with teachers to obtain detailed data. The study investigated the views of teachers about differentiated assessments along with the assessment strategies they implement in their classrooms. In addition, it aimed to study the impact of differentiating assessment on teaching and learning. The study showed that many teachers perceived differentiated assessments as effective tools that could be effectively applied in classrooms. Moreover, they could be used to better manage classrooms, meet students' needs and differentiate students' learning. Examining the perception of teachers helped us understand the knowledge teachers had and what they might apply in their classrooms. That allowed us to know if the learning cycle was continuous or conventional in those classrooms. The collected data from the questionnaire beside the obtained results from the interviews described how teachers perceived differentiated assessments in classrooms. This in return clarified the effectiveness of these assessments.

The issue of accurate and fair assessment of students' writing probably constitutes the major dilemma in both L1 and L2 writing fields, and EFL field is not an exception. The paper also aims to make Cape Verdean EFL teachers aware of the different types of alternative assessment that exist to assess students, focusing on analytical and self-assessment tool, as important means of gaining a dynamic picture of students' academic and linguistic development.
