Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The area of similarity searching is a very hot topic for both research and c- mercial applications. Current data processing applications use data with c- siderably less structure and much less precise queries than traditional database systems. Examples are multimedia data like images or videos that offer query by example search, product catalogs that provide users with preference based search, scientific data records from observations or experimental analyses such as biochemical and medical data, or XML documents that come from hetero- neous data sources on the Web or in intranets and thus does not exhibit a global schema. Such data can neither be ordered in a canonical manner nor meani- fully searched by precise database queries that would return exact matches. This novel situation is what has given rise to similarity searching, also - ferred to as content based or similarity retrieval. The most general approach to similarity search, still allowing construction of index structures, is modeled in metric space. In this book. Prof. Zezula and his co authors provide the first monograph on this topic, describing its theoretical background as well as the practical search tools of this innovative technology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This brief presents several new query processing techniques, called complex motion pattern queries, specifically designed for very large spatio-temporal databases of moving objects. The brief begins with the definition of flexible pattern queries, which are powerful because of the integration of variables and motion patterns. This is followed by a summary of the expressive power of patterns and flexibility of pattern queries. The brief then present the Spatio-Temporal Pattern System (STPS) and density-based pattern queries. STPS databases contain millions of records with information about mobile phone calls and are designed around cellular towers and places of interest. Density-based pattern queries capture the aggregate behavior of trajectories as groups. Several evaluation algorithms are presented for finding groups of trajectories that move together in space and time, i.e. within a predefined distance to each other. Finally, the brief describes a generic framework, called DivDB, for diversifying query results. Two new evaluation methods, as well as several existing ones, are described and tested in the proposed DivDB framework. The efficiency and effectiveness of all the proposed complex motion pattern queries are demonstrated through an extensive experimental evaluation using real and synthetic spatio-temporal databases. This clear evaluation of new query processing techniques makes Spatio-Temporal Database a valuable resource for professionals and researchers studying databases, data mining, and pattern recognition.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Almost all pathologists face legal issues when dealing with the specimens they work with on a day-to-day basis, whether it involves quality control and assurance in handling the specimens, facing the possibility of malpractice suits, or serving as an expert witness in a trial. Written in an easy to read, conversational tone, with a dose of good humor, this book fills the need for a handbook that discusses the full spectrum of legal issues that many pathologists face, written from a pathologist's point of view. Organized in 12 user-friendly chapters, the book begins with a comparison of Law and Medicine and explains the basics of the American Legal System. It continues with discussions of the impact of law on the practice of pathology, including such topics as specimens with potential legal implications, the controversy of saving organs for teaching, procuring and saving specimens for toxicology testing and DNA confirmation in identity testing. A must-have section on malpractice suits covers reasons why patients sue, what to do if sued, and reducing the chance of being sued. The author addresses expert witness testimony, including how to be an expert witness, conflicts of interest, conduct in a courtroom, what to say and what not to say. Quality control and assurance as it applies to the pathologist is also discussed. Legal implications for the information age, including the use of internet and e-mail with regard to patient confidentiality is discussed in detail. Case samples are scattered throughout the text to illustrate the principles discussed. Every term is defined in the glossary.

Book Image and Video Retrieval

Download or read book Image and Video Retrieval written by Wee-Kheng Leow and published by Springer. This book was released on 2007-05-22 with total page 686 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It was our great pleasure to host the 4th International Conference on Image and Video Retrieval (CIVR) at the National University of Singapore on 20–22 July 2005. CIVR aims to provide an international forum for the discussion of research challenges and exchange of ideas among researchers and practitioners in image/video retrieval technologies. It addresses innovative research in the broad ?eld of image and video retrieval. A unique feature of this conference is the high level of participation by researchers from both academia and industry. Another unique feature of CIVR this year was in its format – it o?ered both the traditional oral presentation sessions, as well as the short presentation cum poster sessions. The latter provided an informal alternative forum for animated discussions and exchanges of ideas among the participants. We are pleased to note that interest in CIVR has grown over the years. The number of submissions has steadily increased from 82 in 2002, to 119 in 2003, and 125 in 2004. This year, we received 128 submissions from the international communities:with81(63.3%)fromAsiaandAustralia,25(19.5%)fromEurope, and 22 (17.2%) from North America. After a rigorous review process, 20 papers were accepted for oral presentations, and 42 papers were accepted for poster presentations. In addition to the accepted submitted papers, the program also included 4 invited papers, 1 keynote industrial paper, and 4 invited industrial papers. Altogether, we o?ered a diverse and interesting program, addressing the current interests and future trends in this area.

Book Multimedia Databases and Image Communication

Download or read book Multimedia Databases and Image Communication written by Maurizio Tucci and published by Springer. This book was released on 2003-06-30 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Multimedia technologies are rapidly attracting more and more interest every day. The Internet as seen from the end user is one of the reasons for this phenomenon, but not the only one. Video on Demand is one of the buzzwords today, but its real availability to the general public is yet to come. Content providers – such as publishers, broadcasting companies, and audio/video production ?rms – must be able to archive and index their productions for later retrieval. This is a formidable task, even more so when the material to be sorted encompasses many di?erent types of several media and covers a time span of several years. In order for such a vast amount of data to be easily available, existing database design models and indexing methodologies have to be improved and re?ned. In addition, new techniques especially tailored to the various types of multimedia must be devised and evaluated. For archiving and trasmission, data compression is another issue that needs to be addressed. In many cases, it has been found that compression and indexing can be successfully integrated, since compressing the data by ?ltering out irrelevancy implies some degree of und- standing of the content structure.
