Book Production and Neutralization of Negative Ions and Beams

Download or read book Production and Neutralization of Negative Ions and Beams written by Martin P. Stockli and published by American Inst. of Physics. This book was released on 2002-10-24 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The symposium included 20 formal presentations on recent accomplishments in research and development for the production and neutralization of negative ions and beams. Topics include progress in technical developments and experiences, diagnostic developments, as well as in improved understanding through modeling and theoretical developments. For the first time, a simple, physics-based theoretical treatment was presented to properly model the ion extraction from negative ion sources. In addition, a method was presented that can accurately estimate the rms emittance from measured distributions. The proceedings contain all 20 presentations, written by 60 authors and co-authors, involving 21 institutions worldwide. All papers were peer reviewed.

Book Efficient Production of Neutral Beams by Photodetachment of Negative Ions

Download or read book Efficient Production of Neutral Beams by Photodetachment of Negative Ions written by and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A neutral fraction approaching 97 percent can be attained by photodetachment of negative ions if the photon density and thickness are adequate. This high efficiency of neutralization is desirable not only because of the improvement in power balance and power efficiency but also because of the increase in the useable beam current per module. Only modest improvements in commercial solid-state lasers are required to fulfill the requirements of a photodetachment cell for a fusion reactor. The wavelength of 0.85 x 10−4 cm is suitable with respect to the photodetachment cross section, the performance characteristics of present-day lasers, and the high reflectivity of the mirrors required for the optical cavity. Improvements may be possible by using resonances in the near ultraviolet region to enhance the photodetachment cross section. Three reactor-design studies were conducted and it was found that the required laser power is only economical for large injection systems in which beams of several hundred amperes are passed through a single optical cavity for photodetachment. The method is not economical for smaller systems.

Book Production and Neutralization of Negative Ions and Beams

Download or read book Production and Neutralization of Negative Ions and Beams written by Joseph D. Sherman and published by American Institute of Physics. This book was released on 2005-04-20 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This symposium addresses all aspects of H- and D- sources, the formation of negative hydrogen and deuterium beams from these sources, and their beam transport properties. The discussion includes both the latest theoretical and experimental work in these areas. The negative ion sources are multicusp, Penning, magnetron, rf (1-13 MHz), surface converter, microwave/ECR (GHz frequency), and polarized source types. Experimental work also includes beam chopping, space-charge lenses, optimized negative ion extraction systems, and beam diagnostics. The negative ion production mechanisms are volume (pure hydrogen or deuterium discharge) and surface production using cesium or other alkali metal to catalyze negative ion production. Theoretical analyses include plasma chemistry, particle-in-cell modeling, and H-/D- extraction physics simulations. The main applications for H- sources are in high-energy neutral beam injectors for fusion reactors and H- sources for charge exchange injection into synchrotrons or spallation neutron source storage rings.

Book Negative Ions as a Source of Low Energy Neutral Beams

Book excerpt: Little consideration has been given to the impact of recent developments in negative ion source technology on the design of low energy neutral beam injectors. However, negative ion sources of improved operating efficiency, higher gas efficiency, and smaller beam divergence will lead to neutral deuterium injectors, operating at less than 100 keV, with better operating efficiencies and more compact layouts than can be obtained from positive ion systems.

This book was released on 2007-08-30 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The reported advances with small sources of negative ions, especially negative hydrogen ions, drive the progress of many accelerators and enable new research methods and technologies. Large sources of negative deuterium ions are being developed for the international experimental fusion reactor (ITER) that will require 40 MW of plasma heating. The developments increasingly use computer modeling to understand the underlying physics, improve existing, and develop new technologies.

Book Production of Neutral Beams from Negative Ion Beam Systems in the USSR

Download or read book Production of Neutral Beams from Negative Ion Beam Systems in the USSR written by Nikita Wells and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page 107 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report, a sequel to (The Development of High-Intensity Negative Ion Sources and Beams in the USSR), R-2816-ARPA, examines (1) Soviet research on the formation of intense, high-energy neutral particle beams and the associated investigation of charge exchange and beam stripping and (2) the deployment in the USSR of high-intensity negative ion sources of the direct-extraction and double-charge-exchange types, beam neutralizers, and neutral beam injectors, as reported in Soviet open-source technical publications. Based on open-source literature, the study finds no overt exoatmospheric particle-beam weapons in the USSR. The author suggest, however, that such a program may exist as a classified effort paralleling the nuclear fusion research described in the literature. Originator supplied keywords include: Thermonuclear reactions; Plasma temperatures; and Charged particles.

Book Negative Ion Beam Processes

Download or read book Negative Ion Beam Processes written by and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory fiscal year 1975 work on production of intense, very bright, negative hydrogen (H−), ion beams and conversion of a high-energy (a few hundred MeV) negative beam into a neutral beam are described. The ion source work has used a cesium charge exchange source that has produced H− ion beams greater than or equal to 10 mA (about a factor of 10 greater than those available 1 yr ago) with a brightness of 1.4 x 109 A/m2- rad2 (about 18 times brighter than before). The high-energy, neutral beam production investigations have included measurements of the 800-MeV H−- stripping cross section in hydrogen gas (sigma10, tentatively 4 x 10$sup - 19$ cm2), 3- to 6-MeV H−-stripping cross sections in a hydrogen plasma (sigma10, tentatively 2 to 4 x 10−16 cm2), and the small-angle scattering that results from stripping an 800-MeV H− ion beam to a neutral (H°) beam in hydrogen gas. These last measurements were interrupted by the Los Alamos Meson Physics Facility shutdown in December 1974, but should be completed early in fiscal year 1976 when the accelerator resumes operation. Small-angle scattering calculations have included hydrogen gas- stripping, plasma-stripping, and photodetachment. Calculations indicate that the root mean square angular spread of a 390-MeV negative triton (T−) beam stripped in a plasma stripper may be as low as 0.7 $mu$rad. (auth).
